More than 120 years of history
The history of COMSA Corporacion dates back to 1891, the year in which the
company “José Miarnau Navás Contratista de Obras” was created in Reus
(tarragona). In its early years the company focused on track and station renovation
works. In the 1930s the company moved its headquarters to Barcelona and
became a public limited company under the name of Hijos de José Miarnau Navás
and under the leadership of the second generation of the family. During the 1940s
diversified its activities and starts constructing roads, bridges, buildings, etc.
In the late 1950s the third generation of the family took over the reins and in 1964
the company was renamed Construcciones Miarnau. This phase was characterised
by the increasing mechanisation of the works, especially those involving railways, a
process that the company successfully managed, with the incorporation of
specialised machinery.
In the 1960s and 1970s the company consolidated the diversification of its business
and began its geographical expansion throughout Spain, first in Madrid and
Valencia and later in other areas. Coinciding with this growth, the company was
renamed COMSA.
In the following years, COMSA maintained its commitment to technological
innovation and in 1982 incorporated the Rapid Track Renewal Train (TRR), which
is still unique in Spain and which represented a qualitative leap for the railway
projects. In the 1980s the company strengthened its presence throughout the
country and at the end of the decade began executing major infrastructure projects.
This led to participation in the construction of the first Spanish high-speed line
(Madrid-Seville), inaugurated in 1992 for the Universal Exhibition. In parallel, the
company carried out various works related to the Olympic Games in Barcelona,
most notably the construction of the Palau Sant Jordi.
The 1990s saw the progressive entry of the fourth generation into the company,
while internationalisation began in countries such as Portugal, Argentina and Chile.
With the arrival of the new century, COMSA increased its international presence,
now operating in ten countries, and diversified its business into activities such as
the environment, transport by rail, renewable energy and concessions.
The incorporation of the engineering company EMTE in 2009 allowed the formation
of one of the most important infrastructure and engineering groups in Spain.
Currently, the COMSA Corporación is present in more than twenty countries and
enjoys international recognition, a result of a century of experience in the
development of infrastructure, particularly involving railways.

International commitment
Internationalization is one of the main commitments of COMSA Corporación. 2017
was marked by the expansion of the Infrastructure and Industrial Engineering’s
international activities, whose sales accounted for 60% of the group’s total turnover.
Foreign contracts in 2017 exceeded 582 million Euros.
In 2017 COMSA Corporación has focused on markets with high opportunities for
the development of new infrastructures and modernization of the already existing
ones. For this reason, the group acceded to Denmark with a relevant contract for
the construction of the tram in the city of Odense. At the same time, it strengthened
its presence in Poland with a project for the refurbishment of 90 kilometres of track
on line 405 between Szczecinek and Ustka carried out by the subsidiary Trakcja
PRKiL. In Latvia, Kauno Tiltai has led the modernization of a section of the Baltic
motorway. Moreover, COMSA Corporación continues working the Lugoj - Deva
motorway in Romania and maintaining the CERN facilities in France and
Switzerland.
At the same time, it consolidated its presence in strategic countries in Latin
America. In Brazil, it maintains the second phase construction of Line 4 of the Sao
Paulo metro and, recently, it has completed the doubling of the section 4 of the
Régis Bittencourt motorway in the Serra de Cafezal. In Argentina and Uruguay, the
company has various railway refurbishment contracts, among others, the
remodelling of a 327-kilometer section between Piedra Sola and Salto Grande.
Likewise, it is developing the supply, installation and commissioning of the
electromechanical equipment and control systems for the La Línea tunnel in
Colombia, whereas in Peru it is carrying-out the maintenance works in the
transmission and distribution network for ENEL in Norte Chico and Lima.
In Africa, it stands out its role in Algeria where it has carried-out a water treatment
plant in Constantine, as well as a new pharmaceutical plant of oral solutions for the
company Saidal. On other hand, its airport business unit goes on its activity in
Morocco. In 2017, it supplied air-navigation systems in nine airports of the country.
Its specialization in railways, industrial engineering, civil works, building,
installations and systems, and maintenance, combined with a range of services that
are characterized by their innovation, technology and excellence, position COMSA
Corporación as a benchmark player in these sectors while at the same time
providing a differentiating value in markets that are becoming more and more
demanding and increasingly mature.
