Container Terminal – Terminal XXI
With a staged, sustained development
plan, Terminal XXI provides natural
depths down to 17 metres ZH,
allowing the reception of the last
generation container carriers
performing intercontinental routes, as
well as the concerning feeder.
Presently with a quay length of 940
meters + 200 meters and 10 post-
panamax and super post-panamax
gantry cranes, and also 2 mobile
cranes, the terminal offers a yard with
42 hectares, and a total capacity of
2,300,000 TEU per year.

Offering direct weekly
container cargo connections
to the main production and
consumption markets
worldwide, the Port of Sines
guarantees quick access to
foreign markets for companies
located here.
The Port of Sines already offers
regular maritime connections to the
Far East, namely to the PR of China.
Sines is one of the few ports at the
West Med that has direct calls from
ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo,
Yantian, Tanjong Pelapas (MY) or
Busan (KR).
This direct connection is operated by
the 2M Alliance, using both vessels of
MSC and Maersk.

A port with an ambitious expansion plan
In Sines there is capacity for
expansion at all port terminals,
particularly in the liquid bulk, solid
bulk, general cargo and container
segments.
For containerised cargo, two
structural projects are planned:
a) Expansion of the current
Terminal XXI, under the purview
of the concessionaire;
b) Concession of a new container
terminal, the Vasco da Gama
Terminal.

More than 90% of Sines hinterland cargo is
handled by train, deploying 100 compositions
per week to/from Iberian Dry Ports &
Logistics Platforms.
A daily rail service to Northern Europe has
been announced by Medway, starting in 2020.
In addition to Medway (MSC group) an
increasing number of rail operators are able
to offer container services to/from Sines,
including Transfesa (DB Schenker group),
Takargo, Tramesa and Renfe.
Ongoing public investment in the railway
connection to Spain will increase throughput
capacity and improve productivity.

Ports of Sines and Algarve Authority and the
Chinese Logink - Transport and Logistics
Public Information Platform signed a
cooperation protocol on the integration and
sharing of information related to maritime
and port transport.
This MoU aims to establish the bases of
cooperation so that the support systems of
the port activity, namely Logistic Single
Window, can exchange information with the
Chinese systems and thus facilitate trade
between the two countries.
In this way, the associated administrative
processes are streamlined, giving a further
step in reinforcing Sines as the Atlantic hub of
the Belt & Road Initiative.

Road and rail links to the European market
Sines is already today an important rail
freight platform, with trains carrying
containers, refined & petrochemical
products, and coal.
For containerised cargo alone, there
are more than 100 trains per week
going to Iberian dry ports, a number
that will increase once the rail
improvement works in progress have
been completed by 2023.
Sines’ road and rail links are part of the
Trans-European Transport Network
(TEN-T), ensuring access to the Central
European market.
