Fex 151008 - vos logistics - innovatie meeting - presentatie frank verhoeve...Flevum

Susanne Wrighton presentation_Cargo Bike Expert Group_15.10.2019CIE2019
This presentation was given by the named presenter at the kick off meeting of Europe’s first Expert Group on Cargo Bikes and Cycle Logistics on 15th October 2019 in Brussels.
Most of the leading consulting firms have recently issued studies about the expected fundamental disruption of the logistics market. The reasoning is simple. The logistics market is one of the biggest markets at all, accounting for nothing less than one trillion € in Europe alone. It outstands the automotive market (600 billion € in Europe) and is ten times bigger than the advertising market (100 billion Euros in Europe).
And the logistics market is, in digital terms, completely under-developed. In a highly-fragmented market structure, shippers, freight forwarders and transport companies work mostly like they did fifteen years ago, with telephone, fax and email in their daily routine. Prices are intransparent and workflows broken up by manual interfaces. Thousands of intermediaries try to organize non-standardized processes. A paradise for digital startups.
And the timing seems just right. The industry is very traditional with many family owned businesses not known for their thrive for innovation. But today, technology has become so simple to use that even a truck driver can handle a mobile application on his smart phone. And the digital startups promise to save time and money. Who could resist?
One thing seems clear. The market opportunity is so big that any of the promising logistic startups can be the next European unicorn if it reaches a market leader position. This is why Schickler has created in its incubator the road transportation startup Cargonexx in 2016. One and a half years later, Cargonexx has already registered 2,500 carriers and transported more than 20,000 tons which make it the most promising road transportation startup in Germany. But there are more promising logistics startups to watch in Europe. We have gathered a list of ten logistics startups you should know if you are interested in this market. This list does not claim to be exhaustive but it gives a good overview of the fast-developing world of logistic startups.
