3. A strategic location
In Europe, Sines is the optimal location
to establish a transfer hub for logistics
activities.
It is the first European deep-water port
for the Atlantic routes and therefore a
strategic platform for the Americas
and Africa.
It is the prime entry point from the
Americas to the Iberian Peninsula and
the European Union, with maritime,
road & rail connections to the EU
common market.

4. Next to a deep-water port
The Port of Sines is Portugal’s major
deep water port, with the ability to
welcome all types of ships, of any size.
It offers specialised terminals for all
cargo types: liquid bulk; dry bulk;
general cargo, Ro-Ro and containers.
It has implemented the concept of
electronic dispatch, with high levels of
productivity in port operations.

5. Multipurpose terminal
The Port of Sines Multipurpose Terminal is
designed to handle dry bulk, general cargo
and Ro-Ro.
The berth has a total length of 645 metres
along the extrados, and 296 metres for the
intrados. It also offers a dedicated quay with
a Ro-Ro ramp.
With depths between 15 and 18 metres
below chart datum, it can receive ships of
190,000 tonnes/dwt.
The terminal is connected to the Sines
Industrial and Logistics Zone and the national
transportation network by road and rail.

expansion areas for logistics
Intra-port areas available
Next to the Multipurpose Terminal
there are several areas available with
room to installation warehouses and
temporary parking for auto logistics
stones and minerals, metal structures
or for agribusiness logistics.
These areas benefit from an excellent
location, optimizing the logistical
operations associated with handling at
the port.
Now that coal is no longer imported
and moved to power plants, an
opportunity has come up for the
terminal to operate other cargo types.

7. Ro-Ro ramp at the Multipurpose Terminal
The Multipurpose Terminal ramp is
designed to receive Ro-Ro vessels
with a “straight stern ramp" up to
a maximum of 205 metres in
length and a draught (standard) of
15 metres, or larger as long as the
draught does not exceed 14
metres.
It is also possible to use Ro-Ro
vessels with a "side ramp", as long
as they are adaptable to a quay of
7 metres high (chart datum).

8. Know-how in handling large structures
The Multipurpose Terminal has
excellent conditions for
handling large structures such
as wind turbines and industrial
equipment.
The terminal has the
experience and operational
capacity for these types of port
operations.

9. Synergies with the Container Terminal
Logistics projects in Sines can be
enhanced by the synergies created
with expanding PSA’s operated
Sines Container Terminal.
This state-of-the art container
terminal can receive the largest
containerships operating in the
world.
High productivity indexes of port
operations and minimal waiting
times guarantee competitiveness
to port users.
The ongoing capacity duplication
will require and make growth the
logistics services opportunities.

10. Global Services Network
Being a major transhipment
hub in the Iberian Peninsula,
Sines offers direct weekly
container cargo connections
to the main production and
consumption markets
worldwide.
Thus, the Port of Sines
guarantees quick access to
foreign markets for
companies located here.

11. A port with an ambitious expansion plan
At Sines there is room for the expansion
of all existing port terminals.
For containerised cargo, there are two
structural projects:
a) Current expansion of PSA’s “Terminal
XXI” to ≥ 4 MM TEU;
b) Concession of a new second
container terminal for ≥ 3.5 MM TEU,
tentatively named “Vasco da Gama
Terminal”, with a B.O.T. tender open
until April 6th, 2021 currently under
review by the Portuguese
Government.

12. Rail link to major dry ports
In 2019, the Port of Sines handled about
105 container trains per week to and from
the Portuguese and Spanish logistics
platforms and dry ports (on average 15
trains per day).
Over 90% of all containers transported to
and from the hinterland are moved by
train.
The improvements on the freight railroad
connection to Spain by 2023 will allow for
the doubling of the number and length of
trains, whilst reducing transit time. Cutting
the container price to the border by half
and allowing for the most efficient port
access to Madrid and beyond. Dry Ports

14. The Logistics Single Window (JUL)
is a paperless electronic platform
that connects all public
Authorities with the private
operators.
All authorizations to enter the
port are granted 2.5 days before
the vessel’s arrival, thus ensuring
that port operations start
immediately.
This single window concept was
expanded from port & maritime
to the hinterland stakeholders,
covering the entire logistics chain.

Sines is already an important rail
freight platform, with trains carrying
containers, oil and refined products.
For containerised cargo alone, there
are more than 100 trains per week to
Iberian dry ports, a number that will
increase once the rail improvement
works in progress have been
completed.
