Pre-Service Teacher Education at Osaka University: A Reflective Report on the Future Faculty Program

  1. Founded in 2013 Six-year funding from MEXT for FD From 2019  University funding Faculty development before 2013 Existed but was not centralized FD workshops in English by Prof. Arikawa and Prof. Takemura Each department had its own FD too (sometimes out-sourced)

  4. As a research-focused institute of higher education, Osaka University has many students who wish to stay in academia; therefore, such a program is a must.
  5. 1〜9書いた番号は教科書のユニットの番号です。 The numbers refer to the units of the textbook.
  6. Advanced Training in Pedagogy
  7. You make your research plan following the SoTL approach. You prepare for job hunting by writing your philosophy of teaching/research/contribution to society.
  8. FFP I is the prerequisite. It’s quite similar to FD programs. It’s the most general course, not only limited to higher education but also very important for any teacher. FFP II is unique to Osaka University. FFP III, SoTL program only practiced in pre-FD but not FD
  9. Alumni Trip: 勉強会 Some are now faculty members and engage in SoTL research. They also conduct collaborative research projects with the TLSC team.

  11. Language barrier Creating a similar program in English Reaching out to more international students
  12. This program and similar ones could greatly help graduate students (in particular those from non-education-related backgrounds) to develop their academic teaching skills, expand their network, and be better future faculty!

  14. Pioneer Non-credit two-day workshop Intensive credit course similar to FFP I School of Letters pre-FD for overdoctors CPEHE center for the promotion of excellence in higher education, Kyoto University
  15. Funding from MEXT for FD at Tohoku University and other universities Similar FFP program for any Tohoku area graduate student and new faculty members (junior faculty) Non-credit Tohoku University students and new faculty can go to Berkley to participate in FD programs there
  16. Hokkaido University & Hiroshima University are active.
  17. The Future Faculty Program as a great initiative at national universities such as Osaka University could be a model for other universities to start their own pre-FD programs. The need for such programs in English is also greatly felt.
