1. Evaluation Task 4
How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
2. Websites and Online
Applications
Throughout our research and planning stages we used
many online websites and applications to help us with the
process. We used different applications and websites
such as, soundcloud, slideshare, freesound, youtube,
pearl and dean and voice memos.
3. Soundcloud
We used soundcloud to upload voice memos
for the animatic sequence of our teaser
trailer. By uploading the voice memos we
was then able to download the sound files
onto the group mac and then from the group
map we was able to put those into our
animatic on final cut pro x.
4. Slideshare
SlideShare was a key online application we
used in our research and planning stages, we
used this application to embed all of our
PowerPoint or word document tasks into our
journal. For example we used SlideShare to
embed our pitch presentations onto our
journals amongst many other things later on
in the research and planning stages such as
the location call sheet and the script.
5. Freesound
Free sound is a website full of free
downloadable sound effects. We used this
website to obtain a large number of non-
diegetic and diegetic sound effects for our
teaser trailer. For example the gun cocking
sound we used for the end of our teaser
trailer was found on the free sound website.
6. Pearl and dean
In our research and planning stages we used the
website called pearl and dean to gain information
about our target audience, we did this buy
researching the audiences of thriller films similar to
ours such as shutter island and prisoners. By
researching these films we were able to come to a
conclusion on the target audience for our film.
7. Voice memos
We used the voice memos application on the
college iPad to record the lines of dialogue
we needed for our animatic sequence in the
research and planning stages of our
production.
8. Software
Throughout our research and planning stages and our production stages
we used 3 key software's, which were final cut pro X, Adobe
Photoshop, Adobe illustrator and garage band . However we used these
applications a lot more in the production phase rather than the research
and planning stage.
9. Final cut pro X
Final cut pro X was a key element in the production
stages of our teaser trailer this is because we used
this software to edit our teaser trailer. A very
important function I used in final cut pro was the
denoiser effect, I used this effect to get rid of the
background noise in the clips which was very present
without the effect added, this gave our teaser a
more professional feel and made it seem much more
realistic.
10. Final cut pro X
Another feature that I specifically used in final cut
pro was the vocal transformer effect in the dark
room scene when George receives a phone call from
the mysterious figure. I used this effect to make the
dialogue on the phone sound like it is distorted, on
its own this effect would not have achieved this
therefore I had to use the effects fine tuning board
to get the voice sounding exactly how I wanted it to
sound.
11. Final cut pro X
One of the most significant effects I used on the final
cut pro X software was the space designer effect. This
effect allowed me to transform dialogue and make it
sound as if it is in a certain space. This was needed
because most of the dialogue for the production was
recorded in post-production on a microphone and if I
was to just put that dialogue over the clips without
modifying it, it would have sounded out of place and
it would have been obvious that we recorded it in
post-production.
12. Garageband
Me and Andrea's used garage
band to produce two backing
tracks for our teaser trailer.
As our skill with garage band
was very limited we did not
try to do anything to complex
as we thought this would be
time wasting so instead of
making one from scratch we
explored the various loops the
software had to offer and we
put two together to make a
dynamic and fast paced track
for the second part of the
trailer when the pace picks
up.
13. Adobe photoshop
Adobe photoshop was key in the post production
stages as we used it to remove the background from
character images so that we could then insert them
into adobe illustrator to add graphic elements such
as texts etc. One of the tools that made this really
useful was the magic wand tool, however sometimes
the contrast between the background and the
character was to high therefore we had to use the
eraser tool before the magic wand tool to separate
the character from the background image.
14. Adobe illustrator
Adobe illustrator was a key part of software we used
in our production stages. I did not have much input
in the poster and magazine cover in terms of the
creation scheme of things as after we all had a go at
using the different software's we all realised that
Lauren and Katie were more skilled in photoshop
and me and Andreas were more skilled in video
editing in final cut pro. However adobe
illustrator was still key as we used it to add text and
background images to our character images in an
effort to create the best magazine cover and poster
we could.
15. All computer equipment
and devices
The apple macs were key in the post production and research and
planning stages of our promotional package. We also used a
professional microphone in the post production stages.
16. Apple mac
The apple mac was a key part of equipment in our
research. and planning stages as this is what we
essentially did all of the research on and it is where
we kept most of our photos that we needed for our
research. Overall without the macs we could not
have done any of our work.
17. Microphone
In the post production stages we had to use a
microphone to re-record parts of our dialogue as after
we received feedback on our rough-cut we reailsed
that some parts could not be heard. So we had to use
a microphone in combination with an apple mac to
rerecord some audio.
19. Canon 80d
The camera was a key part of equipment in the
production stages. We used the camera too quite
obviously film all of the clips we needed for our teaser
trailer and to shoot the photos we needed for the poster
and magazine. The camera had very good quality auto
settings therefore in most cases we did not mess around
with the exposure lock or the manual focus. However in
one scene we wanted to produce a blurry effect
therefore we moved away from the auto settings and
unfocused the camera at the end of a specific shot.
Shot in which we used
the manual focus.
