Nervous System Suffixes and Examples
Nervous System Responsible for coordinating all the activity of the body Receives information from external and internal sensory receptors Uses information to adjust the activity of muscles and glands to match the needs of the body Subdivided into the Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System
Nervous System Central Nervous System Brain Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System Cranial Nerves Spinal Nerves
- phasia Suffix Meaning: Speech
Aphasia Acquired language disorder in which there is an impairment of any language modality Suggest total impairment of language Causes: Lesions to language relevant areas (i.e. Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area) Damage can be caused by: Brain tumor, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Traumatic Brain Injury, Epilepsy There are many different types Example: Global Aphasia- severe communication abilities, extremely limited in speaking and comprehending language Treatment: No treatment proven to be effective for all types of aphasia
Language Relevant Areas
Dysphasia Patient experiences an impairment of the power of speech Causes: Damage to the Left area of the brain Examples: Stroke, Head Injury, Infection, Inflammation Treatment Speech Therapy
- plegia Suffix Meaning: Paralysis
Monoplegia A symptom not a disease Paralysis of a single limb Common Causes: Cerebral Palsy Stroke Brain tumor Nerve damage Treatment: Depends on the underlying cause
Quadriplegia Also known as Tetreplegia Paralysis of all limbs and torso Causes: Damage to the Brain Damage to Cervical Vertebrae Symptoms Loss of functionality of limbs Loss of functionality of torso Loss or No control in bowel and bladder, sexual function, digestion, breathing Treatment Intensive Rehabilitation (though patient will only gain very little movement back)
Quadriplegia Christopher Reeve Became Quadriplegic after a horse riding accident Regained slight movement are intensive therapy and rewiring nerve connections
