This document discusses different types of paralysis that affect the nervous system. Hemiplegia is paralysis of one side of the body, monoplegia is paralysis of a single limb, and quadriplegia/tetraplegia is paralysis of all four limbs. Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower extremities. Congenital paralysis seen in premature or low birth weight babies can result from maternal illness or chemical exposure. It is often associated with cerebral palsy, which causes lack of motor skills. Acquired paralysis can come from spinal cord injuries, which sever communication between nerves and the brain, causing paralysis below the injury site. Different types of aphasia are discussed which affect speech abilities.
