My presentation in 9th Panhellenic Conference "ICT in Education". Rethymnon, Crete 4/10/2014
This presentation looks at the changing ways in which young people are using technology for playing, for communication and for learning.
It suggests that the education systems are failing to respond to new ways of learning.
The presentation goes on to propose the development of Personal Learning Environments, based largely on social software especially as a way of reflecting on informal learning.
Presentation on Lifelong Competence Development and Personal Learning Environments. The audio for the presentation can be found on the Bazaar project web site - www.bazaar.org - on the blog page.

Presentation given at the Seminar "Opportunities and Challenges of Learning with Technologies: Evidence-based Education" at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU on 12 November 2014 in Brussels.
"Collaborative Learning Spaces: Methods, Ethics, Tools, Design." Great Plains Alliance for Computers and Writing Conference. North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND. October 2010.
Individuals benefit from ongoing and professional development through formal and informal learning experiences but are often offered limited support to manage the evidence of their learning for future uses (eg for such things as applying for a job or a promotion, supporting performance management or recognition of prior learning and/or applying for a grant or entry into a tertiary institution).
This presentation demonstrates how Mahara is being used to with educators and support staff using collaborative learning techniques, critical reflective dialogue and shared learning experiences to support their action-based learning and action-research projects. This session will also showcase how the educators and support staff collectively generate and gather evidence in Mahara which they can be used in the future or as part of their ongoing reporting requirements.
This talk was given at a multiplier event organised by the University of Wolverhampton as part of the MOONLITE project (refugees, languages and moocs). In this presentation I share the experiences and approaches used to design one of the first MOOCs allround, and the first MOOC focused on mobile learning. The presentation looks at pedagogy, technology, community and impact of the course.

Present day showing techniques request imaginative and powerful utilization of innovation at most extreme level. Consolidating a virtual group outside classroom instructing has turned out to be inescapable in computerized age training. This exploration was planned to discover how this can be utilized as a part of terms of intuitive instructing and how it can encourage understudies to recuperate the absences of learning in classroom. A web group of a college called Learning Feedback System (LFS) has been utilized here as the strategy to break down five example cases. Impacts of
A critical level of connection in LFS showed that it decreased the correspondence hole between understudies and educators that obviously prompting appropriate learning.

The effect of educational networking on students’ performance in biologyIJITE
The purpose of present study is to investigate the impacts of incorporating Edmodo as educational network,
into a classroom setting on the academic achievement of Biology students based on three types of
conceptual level comprises of direct, simple, and complex concept. Researcher intended to seek for the
reason of improvement in their achievement test for all the three types of conceptual level. A total of 140
Biology students was selected from three secondary schools which were chosen using convenient random
sampling to participate in this study and were divided randomly into two groups. A mixed methods design
which involved pretest-and post-test was obtained as quantitative data and follow-up with in-depth
interview was obtained as qualitative data. Mann–Whitney U tests were used to analyze students’ gain
scores. The results indicated that students that were instructed by the instruction with intervention
performed a larger on the gain scores of all the three cognitive levels; than those instructed by the
conventional approaches. Five themes of reason for the difference on gain score between control group
and experimental group were found from interview data which encompass self-paced learning, boredom,
complex conceptual understanding, interesting and motivation, extra information and; communication and
interactivity. This educational network will permeate all facets of the curriculum as a new paradigm of
teaching tools.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

6. Web 2.0 tools in classrooms?
Greek teachers say YES but there are concerns.
Preconception in the use of Facebook and
Twitter from kids.
“…They function as a hook to engage kids….”
(McClain 2013)
7. What can solve these concerns?
The use of an Online Educational Social Network
8. Why Edmodo?
Free of charge and available in

Parents’ participation
Interaction with other teams
10. The research question
Could Edmodo be an innovation in
education, according to the Theory
of Diffusion of Innovation by
Everett Rogers?
11. Rogers’ Theory
• Diffusion: A change to the structure of
function of a social system (Rogers, 2003).
• Social system: A community of independent
people which work in more or less
complementary way toward more or less
compatible goals (Pervin, 1967).
• Innovation: An idea, a practice or an object
that is either new or perceived as new by
individuals in a social system.
12. Adaptation of an innovation
Rogers suggested that 49-87% of the adaptation
of an innovation can be explained by how much
the innovation fits to these attributes:
• Relative advantage
• Compatibility
• Complexity
• Trialability
• Observability
13. Case Study
A “Digital classroom” with the social network
Edmodo was decided to be used in students of the
highest level of High School (3rd class of Greek
Lyceum), for the subject of Physics, in the
supporting school “Systima”, in Thessaloniki. Its
duration was the whole school year, which began at
24/6/2013, there was an interval for summer
holidays for one month and it was continued from
25/8/2013 until 25/5/2014. Thirty students took
part in this “Digital classroom”.
23. Results
By applying Rogers’ Diffusion of
Innovation model it becomes
evident that in a “Digital
classroom” using Edmodo
almost all the attributes are
aligned very well.
24. Relative Advantage
Virtual experiments
Videos
Pictures
Audio files
Motives for students’ participation
Collaboration
Skills for Information Society
26. Complexity
Similar to Facebook
Greek menu
Mobile version
Not need of downloading
Help page with FAQ’s
Support group
Web seminars
27. Trialability
Teacher can create and test everything before
students have access
Reusable material
Creation test groups with colleagues before
use of students
28. Observability
Interaction with other groups and schools
which use Edmodo
At the end of school period, educators can
check if this helped students to their final
exams
The daily participation of students is another
observation factor
29. Conclusion
According to Rogers’ model, all the attributes
are aligned very well and that demonstrates that
Edmodo could be an innovation in schools of
Education 2.0. However, there is plenty of space
for further investigation in schools and other
educational institutes in order, the early
adopters spread this new idea to vast majority
(Rogers, 2003) and become an educational tool
that every teacher and every student will use it.
