2. Meaning of Housing:
• Generally speaking, housing may be defined as an architectural unit for
accommodation in order to protect the occupants from the forces of
nature.
• But in wider meaning housing covers all the services and community
facilities which are essential to human well being.
• In addition to the physical structure, it includes water supply, sanitation,
and disposal of water, recreation and other basic amenities of life.
• Thus housing can be defined as a component architectural structure
within a total system consisting of various settlement variables.
3. Role of Housing:
• Housing is closely associated to the process of overall socio-economic
development.
• It provides shelter and raises the quality of life.
• It improves the quality of health, sanitation and education.
• It provides employment opportunities to the rural and urban people.
• Moreover it helps to improve urban rural equality by narrowing down
the difference in the standard of living.
• Thus housing performs multiple functions including many social needs
of the household.
4. AIM OF THE SITE VISIT
• The aim of the site visit was to study the housing colony ,
which was established in the year of 1985, and was developed
by MHADA , which consists of housing for
• LOW INCOME GROUP ( L.I.G.)
• MIDDLE INCOME GROUP ( M.I.G)
• HIGH INCOME GROUP ( H.I.G)
5. OBJECTIVE OF THE SITE VISIT
• To perform the critical assessment of the housing scheme in
the context of -
o The planning of the colony
o The planning of individual dwelling units
o Provision of services
o Provisions of amenities
o Road network
o Comfort and aesthetics
o Socio – economic mix of the community
o Organic development of the area over the time
6. METHODOLOGY
• The methodology to perform the critical assessment of
the housing scheme consists of -
oThe site visit to get the actual feel of the site
oThe study of plans and layouts
oInterviews of the residents
oPhotographs and Video shooting
7. M.H.A.D.A.
• The Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) has been
established by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Act, 1976. It
came into existence on 5th December 1977.
• This body undertook construction of residential buildings under various
housing schemes for different sections of the society. The allotment and
maintenance of these buildings was being looked after by it.
• At present MHADA is cordinating and controlling the activities of seven
regional housing boards, setup for each revenue division in the state viz.
Mumbai, Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad and two special
purpose boards viz. Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board and
Mumbai Slum Improvement Board.
