Americans perceive Germans as honest, straightforward, and reliable, but also opinionated
and aloof. We need to understand how the start of Germany and what the people of the
country went through to understand their culture. Until the time of Napoleon and the
beginning of the 19th century, Germany was made up of over 100 small states. If your status
was peasant or noble person, you kept it, accepted it and made the best of it. Germany
became unified in 1871, and enjoyed forty years of prosperity and stability. Germany then
entered the First World War, and began a total of 35 years of turmoil and instability. Finally
it became what is presently the Federal Republic. This left a people with a profound need for
stability or “Ordung”. This left a society
