What is Nike?
When I say “Nike”, what is the first thing that you think of? To the average American,
one who is likely reading this essay, Nike is an American footwear and fashion company, maybe
you think of their shoes, maybe you think of their signature swoosh trademark (one that has
become recognizable around the world in the recent decade), maybe if you’re an athlete, you
think of the relevant brands associated for your sport, maybe if you were a human rights activist,
you’d think of abuse, and in some cases, you might think “employer”. Whatever you associate
with Nike, whether it be its brands, history, or influence, it’s undeniable that it’s easily one of the
most recognizable American companies who have left an indelible mark upon the world. This
multi-faceted company can be seen in many lights, evoking many different emotions and ideas of
what it means to have an international influence, whether it be in terms of responsibility for
behaviors abroad, national pride, being a foreign invader, being a job maker, or even just being a
trend setter. The purpose of the organization profile will be to examine the conditions in which
the Nike Supply Chain exists and has existed, closely observing what abuses have occurred, what
changes have been made to change these issues, and if they have improved.
The History of Nike
Originally founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, Nike was a company serving as a
distributor for a Japanese brand (one that would later come to be known as ASICS) in the United
States. The company was originally founded by two men, Phil Knight a ...

2. Agenda Recap on the Mission Statement Behind the scenes of Nike Nike’s Responsibilities Employees Environment Future plans for the environment Conclusion
3. Mission Statement “To Bring inspiration and innovation to Every Athlete in the world.” “ If you have a body, you’re an athlete.”
4. Behind the scenes of Nike Accusations Abusing child labor laws Abusing compensation laws Excessive hours of work/ overtime
5. Nike Responsibilities Code of conduct This was created in 1991 to improve working conditions in the product factories. It has been reviewed and updated over the years, and is now a straightforward statement of values, intentions, and expectations. Meant to make decisions in the factories. Child Labor Compensation Hours of work/overtime Environment safety and health
6. Nike Responsibilities Child Labor A Nike contractor does not employ any person under the age of 18 to produce footwear, and under the age of 16 to produce apparel, accessories, etc. However in countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan verification of age is next to impossible to identify. If any factory is found to be employing a child, they must excuse them from the factory, pay there wages, provide them education, and re hire when they are old enough. “Improving working conditions is one of our biggest priorities at this point.” Phil Knight Co founder
7. Nike Responsibilities Compensation Nike provides each employee with at least minimum wage or the prevailing industry wage, which ever is higher. A exact receipt after every pay period, and does not deduct for disciplinary infractions. “On finishing work in a Nike contract factory, the great majority of Nike workers will go back to rural areas marked by extreme poverty. Their future economic security is very much tied up with what they earn now, in that if they are able to save enough they will be able to start small informal businesses back home. If they are unable to save, the work in the Nike factory will make no long-term contribution to their economic well being, and they will simply return to rural poverty”. Tim Connor Nike Watch
8. Nike Responsibilities Work Hours/ Overtime Nike only complies with legally mandated work hours, which is allowing no more than 60 work hours in a week, one day off in seven and only provides overtime when an employee is fully paid. Also the employee must be informed at the time of hiring if mandatory overtime required.
9. Nike Responsibilities Environment/ health There has been written environmental, safety, and health policies to implement a system that minimized negative impacts on the environment, reduce work related injury and illness, and promotes the general health of the employees.
10. Future Environmental plan Innovate for a better world Nike will refurbish playing fields, provide Nike products, fund community based programs, and help young people create their own communities. Nike Responsibility
