Amey PLC has recently completed the core investment programme for Sheffield PFI.
One of the challenges for Amey was the inclusion of about 30 famous listed sewer lanterns and lighting columns distributed throughout the city that were in varying stages of decay. Not only were the columns listed but the residents were fiercely protective of their architectural history and in some cases, had taken charge of the asset themselves.
So, what’s the problem then? Replacement lanterns and a lick of paint should do the trick.
Unfortunately, there was no available electrical supply to most of the columns as most of them were connected to the gas grid, about three still worked.
Though the lighting designs did not rely on the sewer lanterns for light distribution, some vociferous residents had been misinformed that they were going to be replaced with modern LED lanterns and naturally were very concerned as to their impact on the environment.
The costs and associated disruption of connecting electricity supplies to some architecturally sensitive areas together with gas supply company’s concerns in maintaining a safe supply on the street meant an innovative approach had to be taken. This project was originally given to the Electrical Engineering faculty of Sheffield University who were unable to develop a workable solution. Jonathan Skill of Amey then approached Pudsey Diamond Engineering Ltd to see whether their recently solar bollard technology could be adapted and incorporated into the sewer gas lantern to allow the lanterns to be in light.
This was a very significant challenge. English Heritage were concerned that the exterior of the lanterns were not to be altered and further, the lanterns were to be reworked where possible, repaired and not replaced with replicas.
The authors of this paper will explore the significant challenges presented with the audience and demonstrate how leading edge technology of 3D printed gas mantles combined with LED modules driven from innovative and unique solar capture units with energy storage using lithium iron batteries within the lantern allowed this project to be delivered to the satisfaction of English Heritage and the residents of Sheffield.

Tunnels have very specific demands due to limited access for maintenance and a harsh interior environment. When Ankara Municipality required an up-to-date lighting solution for the Celal Bayar Boulevard tunnels it looked to GE Lighting to provide reliable, trusted roadway lighting solutions. Long life was a key priority and GE’s Tunnel LED system was the perfect answer, as it achieves six years of 24 hours usage life, together with better light uniformity and lux levels when compared to conventional HID systems.

One of Turkey’s largest sports and entertainment centres, the Fenerbahçe Ülker Arena looked towards the reliability and experience of GE Lighting to provide a complete indoor and outdoor lighting solution that was able to meet a range of complex demands. GE Lighting developed a bespoke scheme that combined high quality with durability, and with instant restrike – that was a key point when deciding on the products.
The presentation is intended to give an insight into the overall project and the technical challenges associated with the £3.7million electrical and lighting refurbishment contract at Erskine Bridge:
As an introduction Louis will provide some background into the project and justification for the decision to go ahead with the LED replacement and inclusion of the CMS system.
He will then highlight some of the technical challenges which had to be addressed, the solutions which were developed, and explain the reasoning behind some of the decisions taken. This will include elements of the DSEAR Regulations and the need to consider the internal bridge structure as a hazardous area. He will also discuss elements of the buildability issues which were encountered and the development of bespoke products (column baseplates, Aircraft Navigation Lights etc.) which had to integrate with the existing bridge structure and the importance of consideration of safe methods of working at the design and planning stage, and the benefits of implementing these methods when it came to construction stage.
Louis will then describe and discuss the various elements of the construction and handover phases, leading to successful completion of the project.

Our idea is to use optical fibers to bring concentrated day-light into buildings so that significant savings can be made in electricity cost as well as CO2 emissions.

Russian Railways wanted a complete outdoor lighting overhaul, including bridges, tunnels, platforms and turnstile pavilions. The main objectives of the project were to reduce energy consumption, thus increasing profitability and to improve visibility and safety, enabling the company to provide a better service.
Importantly, the company needed a solutions provider that not only had a comprehensive range of quality products to suit the varied applications across its estate, but was also an experienced and competent turnkey partner that could deliver expert consultation within a tight time frame.
Our Solatube Daylighting Systems are known as Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs). They capture sunlight using a rooftop dome, then transfer it indoors through a reflective tube that runs from the roof to the ceiling. From there, the light is evenly dispersed into the interior space using a diffuser.
More than 100m of Tetra™ Contour LED lighting has been installed on the building – a flexible, wheather-proof solution with 40% energy saving and 50,000 hrs orated life.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.

Power Plant re-light – LED case study
The challenge
This UK power station prides itself on being the
country’s cleanest and most efficient coal-fired
power plant.
Its coal hopper shed is in use 24/7 and had
become a very poorly lit working environment
because of its 15 year-old SON light fittings and
the amount of dust and dirt they accumulated.
Regular two-yearly maintenance was a problem,
as track damage had made access difficult and
prevented timely replacement of failed SONs, so
a more reliable and high performance lighting
solution was needed.
Our solution
Hadar Lighting was called in by the plant’s
electrical maintenance technician who had
been impressed with their product range at a
Procurement Open Day. The Hadar sales team
proposed replacing the 20 x 400W high bay
track-mounted SONs and 30 x 70W trackside
fittings with 20 x 160W LED high bays and 15 x
100W LED floodlights.
The result
The LED fittings were delivered in two weeks
and installation took only six days using a rail-
mounted scissor lift for ease and speed due to
the track system being faulty.
The glare-free LED fittings provide a much
better working environment throughout the
shed with everything now looking clear and
crisp.
By reducing the total number of fittings from 50
to 35 and total wattage from 11050W to
4700W, the plant has been able to cut its
energy use from 4.74 to 2.02W/sqm and its
carbon emissions by almost 27 tonnes annually.
While it generates its own power, energy
reduction is still on its corporate responsibility
agenda.
Now maintenance needs are vastly reduced, as
LED fittings run at a much lower temperature
than the SONs and are designed to dissipate
driver heat away from the fitting, so they do
not attract dust and dirt from the atmosphere.
The LED luminaires also carry 5-year warranties
and are expected to last a minimum o f ten
years.
