PostgreSQL Replication High Availability MethodsMydbops
This slides illustrates the need for replication in PostgreSQL, why do you need a replication DB topology, terminologies, replication nodes and many more.
A look at what HA is and what PostgreSQL has to offer for building an open source HA solution. Covers various aspects in terms of Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Time Objective. Includes backup and restore, PITR (point in time recovery) and streaming replication concepts.
This ppt was used by Devrim at pgDay Asia 2017. He talked about some important facts about WAL - Transaction Logs or xlogs in PostgreSQL. Some of these can really come handy on a bad day
This presentation covers all aspects of PostgreSQL administration, including installation, security, file structure, configuration, reporting, backup, daily maintenance, monitoring activity, disk space computations, and disaster recovery. It shows how to control host connectivity, configure the server, find the query being run by each session, and find the disk space used by each database.
The paperback version is available on lulu.com there http://goo.gl/fraa8o
This is the first volume of the postgresql database administration book. The book covers the steps for installing, configuring and administering a PostgreSQL 9.3 on Linux debian. The book covers the logical and physical aspect of PostgreSQL. Two chapters are dedicated to the backup/restore topic.
PostgreSQL is a very popular and feature-rich DBMS. At the same time, PostgreSQL has a set of annoying wicked problems, which haven't been resolved in decades. Miraculously, with just a small patch to PostgreSQL core extending this API, it appears possible to solve wicked PostgreSQL problems in a new engine made within an extension.

Implementing the Future of PostgreSQL Clustering with TungstenCommand Prompt., Inc
Robert Hodges
Users have traditionally used database clusters to solve database availability and performance requirements. However, clustering requirements are changing as hardware improvements make performance concerns obsolete for many users. In this talk I will discuss how the Tungsten project uses master/slave replication, group communications, and rules processing to develop easy-to-manage database clusters that solve database availability, protect data, and address hardware utilization. Our implementation is based on existing PostgreSQL capabilities like Londiste and WAL shipping, which we eventually plan to replace with our own log-based replication. Come see the future of database clustering with Tungsten!

MySQL Scalability and Reliability for Replicated EnvironmentJean-François Gagné
You have a working application that is using MySQL: great! At the beginning, you are probably using a single database instance, and maybe – but not necessarily – you have replication for backups, but you are not reading from slaves yet. Scalability and reliability were not the main focus in the past, but they are starting to be a concern. Soon, you will have many databases and you will have to deal with replication lag. This talk will present how to tackle the transition.
We mostly cover standard/asynchronous replication, but we will also touch on Galera and Group Replication. We present how to adapt the application to become replication-friendly, which facilitate reading from and failing over to slaves. We also present solutions for managing read views at scale and enabling read-your-own-writes on slaves. We also touch on vertical and horizontal sharding for when deploying bigger servers is not possible anymore.
Are UNIQUE and FOREIGN KEYs still possible at scale, what are the downsides of AUTO_INCREMENTs, how to avoid overloading replication, what are the limits of archiving, … Come to this talk to get answers and to leave with tools for tackling the challenges of the future.
Tungsten Use Case: How Gittigidiyor (a subsidiary of eBay) Replicates Data In...Continuent
Learn how Gittigidiyor (a subsidiary of eBay) replicates data in real time from MySQL to Oracle with Continuent Tungsten. Gittigidiyor consolidates reporting data in a single MySQL server. Transactions arriving on this server must be replicated in real time to an Oracle instance.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
