Ancillary Product

Unit G324: Advanced Portfolio
Tagline- The tagline is designed to specifically
appeal to the audience, This is justified by the use
of punctuation within the tagline to emphasise
this ‘change’ that will happen to EastEnders and
that will be ‘forever’. This tagline is bold and
somewhat blunt to give the audience something
to cling on and create fandom about to what will
be the cause to this change.
Image – The main image within this poster is
very effective as it displays a female protagonist,
which immediately captivates an audience who
are followers/ fans of this character/ actor. In
addition to this, she is adopting a very
concerned facial expression, inferring that in this
following episode/ series there will be a
dramatic event that will affect this protagonist.
Synergy
with social
media- The
appropriate
use of the
hashtag allows
the
advertisement
and marketing
of the new
episode/
series to be
shared by the
fans through
twitter,
Instagram and
other key
social media
sites to notify
their followers
about the text.
Institution
Logo- The
purpose of
the ‘BBC
One’ logo is
to inform
the
audience on
which
channel the
program is
televised on
allowing the
audience to
tune in
easier an at
the right
time.
Brand Identity- This convention allows the audience to
recognize what the poster is about and what soap opera it
is. As well as this the institution logo highlights the channel
it is on.
Image – Firstly we can identify that
all the protagonists are naked, which
may symbolise how everything will be
revealed in the following episodes.
Furthermore, there is a fire effect
added to all the protagonists to
connote how there may be tension
and suspense as well with new fierce
personalities.
Institution Logo-
Allows the audience to
recognise the institution
that has the rights to this
soap opera and informs
what channel the soap
opera will be aired on.
Tagline-The tagline like the past one
uses the powerful words ‘change’ and
‘forever’. The hyperbolic and
continuous verb conveys that there will
be a serious and significant event that
will severely change the soap opera.
The date will also remind audience on
the release of the new episode so that
they can tune in to it.
Title- Located at the centre of
the poster to gain the audience’s
attention as they will
immediately be appealed to the
large and bold font. As well as
this, the font colour is a dark
grey which fades to a white. This
may reflect the protagonists as
some may have a dark and
poisonous personality (Villain),
represented by the dark grey,
while the white could depict the
innocent and ‘heroes’ within the
soap opera.
Tagline- The tagline ‘NO ONE
IS SAFE’ is very effective as it is
hyperbolic suggesting that
there is a very impactful and
dangerous event that is
happening and it will affect all
the protagonists. Once again
the font is addressed with a
dark grey tone to illustrate the
stereotypical depressing and
dark scenes which are seen
within a soap opera.
Institution- The iconic ‘BBC’ logo allows the
audience to be convinced that this soap opera
has been professionally produced by a brand a
company the audience are very familiar with
Social media- The social media icons notifies and encourages the
audience to follow their social media sites to keep updated on exclusive
news. As well as this it will allow fandom to occur as it will allow the
audience to interact with each other
Main image- The first main
image (top) portrays the main
protagonists within the soap
opera. This is effective as these
main character could appeal to
particulars followers. As well as
this they all have a different
facial expression, highlighting
that there has been a variety of
events, which has caused
controversy for one and relief for
the other. The editing used on
the main image is low-key
lighting and a dark grey tone to
imply this dystopian setting of
the soap opera. In addition to
this the image (below) gives an
in look to the events as they too
are adopted with a dark
depressing grey tone and a
stereotypical soap opera feature
such as the ‘stalker’.
Critical praise- The effect of the positive ratings and reviews from popular critics
will allow the audience to have more security and encouragement to watch the soap
opera as it has been given strong responses from critics.

From the previous soap opera posters, it is evident that I should ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale)
the use of the multiple protagonists within the main image. This is because by having
more main protagonists within the poster it will appeal to the wider audience as it will
include those who are fans of particular characters. As well as this, I would like to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) the use of social media icons. As a result of these social media
icons it can allow the audience to interact with each other and thereby produce
fandom for the soap opera. Furthermore I would like to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) the
captivating tagline using the words ‘change’ or ‘forever’ as it intensifies and adds
exaggeration on the soap opera, which will engage with the audience.

Poster analysis

  • 1. Soap Opera Genre – Ancillary Product Analysis Name: Maximilian Stainer Candidate Number: 3138 Center Name: St. Andrew’s Catholic School Center Number: 64135 OCR Media Studies – A2 Level Unit G324: Advanced Portfolio
  • 2. Tagline- The tagline is designed to specifically appeal to the audience, This is justified by the use of punctuation within the tagline to emphasise this ‘change’ that will happen to EastEnders and that will be ‘forever’. This tagline is bold and somewhat blunt to give the audience something to cling on and create fandom about to what will be the cause to this change. Image – The main image within this poster is very effective as it displays a female protagonist, which immediately captivates an audience who are followers/ fans of this character/ actor. In addition to this, she is adopting a very concerned facial expression, inferring that in this following episode/ series there will be a dramatic event that will affect this protagonist. Synergy with social media- The appropriate use of the hashtag allows the advertisement and marketing of the new episode/ series to be shared by the fans through twitter, Instagram and other key social media sites to notify their followers about the text. Institution Logo- The purpose of the ‘BBC One’ logo is to inform the audience on which channel the program is televised on allowing the audience to tune in easier an at the right time. Brand Identity- This convention allows the audience to recognize what the poster is about and what soap opera it is. As well as this the institution logo highlights the channel it is on.
  • 3. Image – Firstly we can identify that all the protagonists are naked, which may symbolise how everything will be revealed in the following episodes. Furthermore, there is a fire effect added to all the protagonists to connote how there may be tension and suspense as well with new fierce personalities. Institution Logo- Allows the audience to recognise the institution that has the rights to this soap opera and informs what channel the soap opera will be aired on. Tagline-The tagline like the past one uses the powerful words ‘change’ and ‘forever’. The hyperbolic and continuous verb conveys that there will be a serious and significant event that will severely change the soap opera. The date will also remind audience on the release of the new episode so that they can tune in to it.
  • 4. Title- Located at the centre of the poster to gain the audience’s attention as they will immediately be appealed to the large and bold font. As well as this, the font colour is a dark grey which fades to a white. This may reflect the protagonists as some may have a dark and poisonous personality (Villain), represented by the dark grey, while the white could depict the innocent and ‘heroes’ within the soap opera. Tagline- The tagline ‘NO ONE IS SAFE’ is very effective as it is hyperbolic suggesting that there is a very impactful and dangerous event that is happening and it will affect all the protagonists. Once again the font is addressed with a dark grey tone to illustrate the stereotypical depressing and dark scenes which are seen within a soap opera. Institution- The iconic ‘BBC’ logo allows the audience to be convinced that this soap opera has been professionally produced by a brand a company the audience are very familiar with Social media- The social media icons notifies and encourages the audience to follow their social media sites to keep updated on exclusive news. As well as this it will allow fandom to occur as it will allow the audience to interact with each other Main image- The first main image (top) portrays the main protagonists within the soap opera. This is effective as these main character could appeal to particulars followers. As well as this they all have a different facial expression, highlighting that there has been a variety of events, which has caused controversy for one and relief for the other. The editing used on the main image is low-key lighting and a dark grey tone to imply this dystopian setting of the soap opera. In addition to this the image (below) gives an in look to the events as they too are adopted with a dark depressing grey tone and a stereotypical soap opera feature such as the ‘stalker’. Critical praise- The effect of the positive ratings and reviews from popular critics will allow the audience to have more security and encouragement to watch the soap opera as it has been given strong responses from critics.
  • 5. ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) From the previous soap opera posters, it is evident that I should ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) the use of the multiple protagonists within the main image. This is because by having more main protagonists within the poster it will appeal to the wider audience as it will include those who are fans of particular characters. As well as this, I would like to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) the use of social media icons. As a result of these social media icons it can allow the audience to interact with each other and thereby produce fandom for the soap opera. Furthermore I would like to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) the captivating tagline using the words ‘change’ or ‘forever’ as it intensifies and adds exaggeration on the soap opera, which will engage with the audience.
  • 6.
