Post 5 – Which Radio
Station?
By Shawaeb Tayab
It only makes sense for my documentary to be
broadcasted on a British Broadcasting Corporation radio
station, as my documentary is being broadcasted on BBC
Three.
Now I’ve decided what Corporation to use, I had to decide
what radio station specifically I should utilize.
Choice of stations
BBC Three have a lot of radio stations.
10 National radio stations, and 59 throughout the UK.
The ones of particular interest are
Radio 1
Radio 1Xtra
Radio 2
Radio 1
Radio one plays popular music, which is aimed at a young
audience. It is a very mainstream radio station which will
allow me to appeal to the mainstream audience. Radio 1 will
allow me to reach a lot of potential listeners as they have 7%
of the total audience, Reaching 11 million listeners
nationwide.
It is also the second most popular radio station in the United
Kingdom.
Although Radio 1 has an immense audience, they do not
have a young audience, they target 15-29 year olds, but their
average audience age is 35. Which is a lot older than my
target audience for my documentary.
Radio 1Xtra
Radio 1Xtra on the other hand specializes in urban music.
Hip-Hop, R&B, Dancehall, Grime, Drum & Bass etc. It
focuses on the urban audience.
Being the urban audience, their target audience is a lot
younger. And they do reach a younger audience. Their
audience is typically between 15-30 Years of age.
But, Radio 1Xtra is a lot less popular than Radio 1; the
mainstream alternative. Radio 1Xtra has 0.5% of the total
audience, reaching over 1.1 million viewers. As this
audience is more concentrated into young people, this
audience would be more likely to watch my documentary.
Radio 2
Radio 2 is the most popular radio station in the United
Kingdom. With a total audience of nearly 16 million
viewers. They have 18% of the total U.K. Audience. Radio
2 are known for broadcasting adult contemporary music,
their average age is 35 and beyond; being that 82% of
listeners are over 35.
Although Radio 2 is the most popular radio station, their
target audience is not close to mine, as I am focusing on
younger people.
Conclusion
I will be choosing Radio 1Xtra as they reach a much
younger audience, as their audience is much more
concentrated I will have the best chance of getting more
viewers for my documentary.
