PHOENIX RADIO
Since the initial idea of creating an independent radio station that is localised in the Hampshire area and broadcasting into Hampshire, I
have managed to find three different stations that benefit three specific segments.
These radios are, Express FM, Capital FM and Phoenix Radio.
These segments are labelled, biggest competition, local competition and Other Side of the Spectrum. These segments are used to help find
out which radio station benefits their listeners and how much of a threat are they to my initial idea.

Biggest Competition – The biggest competitor I was able to find in an independent radio system was called Phoenix Radio. This station is
capable of playing heavy metal, rock from past ages and caper to the needs of their audience, which in turn is most likely young adults and
onwards (roughly 25 to 50) I managed to find this radio station by looking at RadioStations.co.uk and searching the keywords “Radio
stations that play rock music” And ended up with a selection of five (5) different rock and metal playing radio stations. I picked Phoenix
Radio due more to the fact it posed more of a competitor; it’s accessible via the Internet, so local people will most likely have the ability to
listen to it wherever in the UK and possibly worldwide. They play the same genre of music I wish to implement into my
station, rock, metal, classic 60’s and 70’s.

So this station poses a significant threat as the Biggest Competition.

Format – The general genre of the station itself is Specialist.
PHOENIX RADIO
Information: This specialist radio station has information varying
From the current playing song, different radio shows in the day,
And what is going to happen over the week. This helps give the
Listeners a better understanding of what is on at the time.
Comfort: Phoenix Radio caters the needs of a diverse rock
And metal group, playing music that best suits the niche
Without concern for the other music genres.

Lively: Each presenter on Phoenix radio has the sense
of knowing the genre to the very core, knowing
everything about the music genre you are playing is
key to a presenter.

Music: Each song that is played on the station is
hand picked from various rock, metal and classic
bands, and depending on the presenter is when
different forms of those music archetypes begin
playing.
RADIO 1
Moving onto the Other Side of the Spectrum choice, I decided to go with Radio 1. The reason in doing this was purely for the fact that
the station is based around mainstream music, there is no preference to specific songs, bands, they just play songs that have recently
done well on the charts or heard about from word of mouth.

Radio 1 is by far the most well known, of the BBC Radio stations. It’s host of lively presenters have managed to bring their listeners in
the UK back many of times in the day to take part in their competitions, listen to mainstream music and found out certain
things, weather, news and new songs that have just arrived. The number one section of the general public that listen to Radio 1 varies
in age, from teenagers to young adults and on to adults (roughly 15 to 25 and onward)

The reason this radio station was picked for the Other Side of the Spectrum is because it does not really pose a threat to my initial idea
in anyway. It may be a famous radio station, but it is not local in sense, it plays mainstream music which is not part of my idea music
genre list.

So this station poses no threat.

Format – Contemporary Radio
RADIO 1
Information: This specific radio website shows the
viewer/listener information on what is being played
now/next, who is LIVE, the radio name. Keeping it user
friendly.
Comfort: Every radio caters to it’s listeners, but Radio 1
specialises in not just one specific music group or style, they
tailor themselves on the many different types to make the
listener feel welcome.

Lively: Each presenter that works for Radio 1 has a
lively attitude, a sense of humour and that feeling of
friendship in their voice. They make the listeners feel
wanted when quizzes or competitions are in effect.

Music: Each song is played depending on public
interest and it’s place on charts. Radio 1 also play
Independent bands a long with big time bands in the
live lounge.
EXPRESS FM
Finally, we’ll take a look at the Local Competition. Express FM was picked due to the fact the station itself is localised in Portsmouth and
caters to the local community as their prime objective. Their main goal is to inform and educate with music on the side, catering again to
their local audience which most likely consists of teenagers to young adults (roughly 16 to 25)

The station itself may not be a famous BBC station, or a BBC funded station at all, instead it is a commercial station that is paid for by
advertisements of possible local shops, organisations, companies, etc. Cookies may also be in paly on the stations website, cookies are
little packets of information that change and alternate, depending on your preferences.
As for the music, the station does not lean toward one specific genre as a whole, instead they play a mix, but mainly A to B to C class
songs from various artists.

The reason why I have chosen Express FM as my biggest local competition is because, although it may not pose a threat music wise, it still
holds the sheer dominance factor of being a local radio station in Portsmouth.

This station poses some threat.

Format – Community Radio.
EXPRESS FM
Information: Express FM is full of information, holstering
the key term that the radio station itself is indeed an
educational station, and aims to inform as one of it’s main
aspects.
Comfort: The website and the presenters tend to their
listeners needs, tailoring what is said and viewed on
the site, this gives the listeners/viewers a better
understanding of which direction the station is going
in.

Lively: As for the presenters themselves, they are
people specifically chosen for their informative
critique, and the ability to inform and play music.

Music: The music that is played on Express FM
revolves around the mainstream factor, not
really having a set genre as it’s standing point.
