2. Blumhouse Productions
This production company was founded by Jason Blum that specialises in the production
of high quality, low budget, horror films.
Blumhouse holds a ‘first look’ deal with Universal Pictures, allowing the other company
to invest in Blumhouse productions before all else and giving both companies and edge.
This company holds claim to productions such as: The Purge, Insidious, Paranormal
Activity, Sinister and Dark Skies.
Using budgets of no more than $5 million, this company is capable of producing huge
success stories of the horror genre like Paranormal Activity; however, the success of
some of Blumhouse’s productions are a combination of skill and luck, making the
company a slightly risky investment due to the uncertainty of their success, with
Blumhouse productions like ‘The Boy Next Door’ having critical receptions.
3. CBS Films
Established in 2007, CBS is an American studio that handles almost all aspects of
media within a film, from the production to the financing to the marketing.
Aiming to release between 4 and 6 film production a year spanning a diverse
range of genres, CBS has already created titles such as: Seven Psychopaths, The
Woman in Black and Beastly.
CBS works to have its productions distributed internationally through
partnerships and synogies with other distribution companies, ensuring a wide
audience.
4. Hammer Films
Founded in 1934, Hammer Films has produced successful horror films for a little over
80 years.
Its first real success stories were classics: Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein and The
Mummy, which all contributed to Hammer Films now strong, reputation as a
respectable and highly profitable horror film production company (though only 1/3 of
Hammer Film productions are horror).
Their more recent horror film successes are titles like: The Woman in Black, Wake
Wood, and The Quiet Ones.
While Hammer Films also produces thriller, sci-fi, action, etc. its main genre remains
horror, and its already shown success in that area makes it a very viable otion.
5. New Line Cinema
In synogy with Warner Bros. Studios, New Line Cinema is known internationally for its
worldwide success stories such as Final Destination, a Nightmare on Elmstreet and Lord
of the Rings – which generated an incredible $3 billion in the box office.
Typically aiming to manufacture films that appeal to the broadest audience
internationally, New Line Cinema selects possible productions carefully, without staying
within the confines of a single genre.
Since joining Warner Bros. in 2008, the budgets for New Line Cinema productions have
rapidly grown and its films have become more successful with the expanse of resources
(e.g. the Hobbit trilogy).
6. Vertigo Films
Founded in 2002, Vertigo Films is a UK based production company that focuses on the
production of unique films, using new, up-coming talent, claiming the advancement of
actors like Tom Hardy, Scoot McNairy, Rupert Wyatt, and Gareth Edwards.
Vertigo Films has produced box office sensation ‘Street Dance’, with a £3.5 million
budget and grossing £11 million, and also created award winning ‘Monsters’.
The innovative company works to create success stories using new talent and low
budgets, and is diverse in its selection of genres, though created horrors such as:
Outpost and the Facility.
7. Blumhouse
Productions
This production
company would
be the most
suitable to
produce our film
– ‘The Shadows
That Guide Us’.
Its expertise and
almost
exclusivity, in
low budget
horror films,
makes the
company ideal
for its
knowledge,
experience and
success.
Hammer Films
This production
company would
be the second
choice to
produce our
film.
It holds large
experience and
expertise in the
production of
horror films, and
has produced
some of the
most successful
of the genre in
history. However
the company
has created
some failures,
and its large
budgets make it
risky.
New Line
Cinema
This company
would be the
third choice in
production
company.
Its few but large
success stories
within the
horror genre
show that the
company holds
knowledge and
skill in their
production, and
their synogy
with Warner
Bros. only works
to provide them
with a larger
budget and
resources.
Vertigo Films
The UK based,
independent
production
company would
be our fourth
choice. Its ability
to create
successful films
from very low
budgets and
using new talent
makes them a
very viable
option for their
skill in
production,
though their lack
of experience in
the horror genre
makes them less
suitable.
CBS Films
This company
would be our
fifth choice. As
an American
based company
with some
experience in
successful
horror films; its
lack of
consistent films
from the genre
suggests it is not
their forte. As an
American based
company, it also
may not be
suitable for our
UK based film.
