DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE HIGH
AND LOW-BUDGET FILM
Differences
• Avatar made more money
• They used different production and distribution
companies
• Their budgets were very different
• They are both from quite well known production
companies.
Similarities
• They both made a large profit
• Two high grossing films
• Both very successful
• They both used four different production and
distribution companies.
20TH CENTURY FOX:
 20th Century Fox was founded in 1935 and is now the most recognised f i lm inst i tut ion in the wor ld. I t
is a f i lm corporat ion which is apar t of the six major Amer ican f i lm companies.
 What other f i lms has the product ion company made?
 20th Century Fox has produced f i lms such as Faul t in our stars, Xmen, Dawn of the Planet of the
apes and Percy Jackson.
 What genre of f i lms does the company usual ly produce? Is this impor tant when consider ing who
could produce your f i lm? Why?
20th century Fox are known for creat ing comedy and fami ly genre f i lm which are thei r most popular
and successful . For example: Night at the Museum.
 This is impor tant for me to know because i f my f i lm genre is a comedy, chi ldren's or fami ly then I
wi l l consider using 20th Century Fox my product ion company because they are very successful and
the second most successful in the wor ld.
LIGHTSTORM ENTERTAINMENT:
 Lightstorm Enter tainment is an Amer ican f i lm product ion company founded in 1990 by James
Cameron and Lar ry Kasanoff .
 What other f i lms has the product ion company made?
 Lightstorm Enter tainment is best know for producing the f i lms Terminator 2: Judgement Day,
Ti tanic and Avatar. These are al l very successful f i lms which had large budgets. Terminator 2 had
a budget of $94-102 mi l l ion and a box off ice of $519,843,345. Ti tanic had a budget of $210 mi l l ion
a n d a b o x o ff i c e o f $ 2 , 1 8 6 , 7 7 2 , 3 0 2 . A f i lm wh i c h h a d a sma l l e r b u d g e t a n d b o x o ff i c e wa s ‘ S o l a r i s ’ .
I ts budget was $47 mi l l ion and box off ice of $30,002758. The prof i t made could be due to the
amount of money put into the f i lm to star t wi th because the higher budget f i lms could have bet ter
effects, actors, sets etc.
 What genre of f i lms does the company usual ly produce? Is this impor tant when consider ing
who could produce your f i lm? Why?
 Lightstorm usual ly produces f i lms wi th a genre of fantasy, science f ict ion, adventure or act ion.
However i t created The Ti tanic which was a romance and histor ical drama f i lm.
 My f i lm would need to fal l into one of these categor ies in order for me to choose Lightstorm
Enter tainment to produce my f i lm.
WARNER BROS:
 Warner Bros. is an Amer ican producer of f i lm, television and music enter tainment which is based in
New York and Cal i fornia. I t was founded in 1923 by Alber t Warner, Har ry Warner, San Warner and
Jack Warner.
 What other f i lms has the product ion company made?
 Warner Bros have produced successful f i lms such as: The Hobbi t , Gravi ty, The Hangover, Har ry
Pot ter, Sex and the Ci ty and The Dark Knight . Har ry Pot ter is one of the highest grossing ser ies of
al l t ime, both domest ic and internat ional . The total eight Har ry Pot ter f i lms produced a box off ice of
a stagger ing $7,723,431,572.
 What genre of f i lms does the company usual ly produce? Is this impor tant when consider ing
who could produce your f i lm? Why?
 Warner Bros. produces a var iety of f i lm genres including Comedy, Romance, Fantasy, Adventure,
Act ion and Hor ror. This is impor tant when choosing who could produce my f i lm because I know that
Warner Bros covers a wide range of genres so this company would most l ikely sui t whatever genre I
choose. I also know that Warner Bros. is a very successful f i lm inst i tut ion which could ensure a
higher success of my f i lm.
AUDIENCES
 Fi lms produced by 20th Century Fox appeal to a wide range of audiences. They
produce fi lms suited for many dif ferent ages and genres.
 Lightstorm Enter tainment creates fi lms of a more defined range of audiences.
Moslty aimed at adults or teenagers because they do not produce many fi lms suited
to young chi ldren.
 Fi lms produced by Warner Bros. appeal to a broad audience because their fi lms are
suited to chi ldren and fami lies but also teenagers and adults because of the horror
and action/adventure.
WHICH INSTITUTION DO YOU FEEL
OUTPERFORMS THE OTHER?
 Warner Bros is the worlds largest major fi lm studio, fol lowed second by
20th Century Fox. They are both par t of the Motion Picture Association
of America (MPAA) which is an American trade association that
represents the six major Hol lywood studios. It includes 20th Century
Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, Warner
Bros. Enter tainment and Walt Disney Studios.
 This means that they are able to invest more money into fi lms giving
them a larger budget which can of ten result in receiving a larger profit
than fi lms which have smal ler budgets.
 Lightstorm Enter tainment has produced very successful fi lms but is not
par t of the MPAA which shows it cannot compete with huge institutions
such as Warner Bros. or 20th Century Fox.
