First regular census – 1881   Last census – March, 2001 Done after every 10 years Usually conducted at the end of the first quarter of the first year in each decade
A particular moment of a day is fixed for the commencement of the census. The persons born after the census moment or the persons dying before the census moment are not included in the census.  Census moment was- 00.00 hours of 1 st  March in 2001   - 00.00 hours of 1 st  April in 2010
20 lakh enumerators and supervisors were employed Estimated cost was Rs.1403 crore Rs.14  Per person Data processing done using ICR  ( Intelligent Character Recognition )   This involves the scanning of the Census Forms at high speed   and extracting the data automatically using computer software.
Slogan –  “ Our Census Our Future ”  Started on 1 st  May, 2010  15 th  National census of the country   Involve 25 lakh  officials.  It is estimated to cost Rs. 2,209 crore  Approx. Rs. 18 per person
The Census forms are printed in 16 languages and the Instruction Manuals in 18 languages.  The census would cover – 35 States & UT 640 Districts 5767 Tehsils 7742 Towns More than 6 lakh villages 24 Crore household 1.2 Billion people
Who will collect the information  -   Govt. servants appointed as enumerators To visit each and every house  Carrying an ID card & appointment letter  DM / localTehsildar can be contacted for any  complaint
2011 census will be conducted in two phases – 1. House listing  (April to September 2010) 2. Population enumeration phase  (starting from 9 th  Feb, 2011)   - Education   - Mother tongue   - Religion   - Details of ST / SC,  if any
Two types of data will be collected – 1. Data on your House and Assets : 35 Questions regarding – Use of house & facility in the home    ( drinking water, latrine, electricity,   internet etc.)   - Assets in your home    ( appliances, computers etc. )   - Possessions ( car, mobile phones etc. )
2. National Population Register ( NPR ) : Biometric data ( photograph, finger prints ) Unique I D Number ( 16 digits ) to all persons > 15 years  Name, Gender, Date & Place of birth, Marital status, Name of parents & spouse, Relation to head of family, Present & Permanent address, Duration of stay at present address, Educational qualification and Occupation
