Pop Analysis 2
(Happy – Pharrell Williams)
To begin with, the song firstly illustrates happiness, linking back to the title
through the location as this can have a positive influence on the viewers as
the video is very bright and luminous. This corresponds with Pharrell’s
artistic and alternative costumes that he wears. The use of him dancing
gives the impression that the song is very jolly. Throughout the video,
different aged people incorporate their own unique dance which adds an
element of the video being targeted at different audiences, including ages,
genders, ethnicities and cultures. Furthermore, the use of changing
location is also a very stereotypical convention for pop videos and lip
syncing which adds to the effect of how Pharrell wants to be seen by the
people who are going to consume this product. Next, the framing of all the
shots makes the video seem very distinctive as the composition center’s
everyone that’s seen in the video which could add to the effect that the
video is aimed towards everyone. Overall, the video’s tone is emphasized
by the use of highlighting high-key lighting at all of the points throughout
the song.

The camerawork for the video is mainly based
on the fact of being mid shots which are
directed around Pharrell’s presence with the
use of including long shots with the other
people within the video. Additionally, the use
of incorporating an establishing shot into the
music video collaborates with the fact of
having different locations stating that the
song is based at anyone audience profile. A
canted angle is also prepared within the
middle of the music video.
Camerawork
In the beginning of the music video, the titles are
highlighted in a yellow theme with black text illustrating
the thought of trying to overcome happiness as the
brighter, more luminous color overpowers the darker color.
The first shot in the video demonstrates the use of a long
take as it’s focused on Pharrell for a while, but then when
the chorus is introduced the shots are degraded to short
takes. Likewise, the transitions within the video are all
simple cut’s which could relate to Pharrell's personality and
the song. Moreover, the song uses the technique of being
in the format of a montage, this is implied by the use of
multiple people dancing with fast cut’s put together to
makes it seem continuous but within different parts of an
area.
