2. Conventions of rock music videos
Tend to be fast paced and full of energy to resemble the upbeat and
temp music
Most of the time tend to be performance based where the band are
performing in front of the camera or in front of an audience
They can also have narrative style and have a story in the video that links
in with the lyrics and theme of the song.
Editing tends to be fast paced to reflect the high paced energy of the
song and video and to also keep the audience entertained and
interested in the video
Editing is sometimes used to edit the colour of the video too
3. Intro
The music video we chose to analyse is “Still into you” by Paramore. The genre
of the song is alternative rock, therefore we would usually expect an artist
focus video. Although the video has features of artist focus, it is mainly a
concept music video, which is a video that doesn’t match the general idea
of the lyrics or theme of the music. This can be proven when analysing mise
en scene and other areas which can be further explained throughout the
presentation.
5. Mise En Scene
Lilacs and pinks on the walls when we first see her. White T-shirt has connotations of innocence
as she’s a young girl. Huge Yellow room when we first see the band together and the colour
yellow I often used for a babies room suggesting that the relationship and her feelings are the
same as when the relationship first started hence the lyric “Still into you”. They are all wearing
summery clothes to suggest hot weather which puts a happy mood with the song. The clothing
also relates to the rock genre as the men are wearing some black clothing and have tattoos
which is sometimes related with this genre of music. Also the ballerinas that appear in the video
don’t really make sense or relate to the song which supports to it being a concept video At the
end of the video they go outside in the dark and they have sparklers suggesting that even in
dark parts of the relationship they still remain strong together.
6. Editing and Camera
Camera- A wide range of camera angles are used such as close ups and
mid shots. The different shots are of the band members and other
numerous things in the video. Also handheld shots are used to resemble
movement to keep up with the fast pace of the song. Also a various
number of camera angles are used for variety and more movement which
suits the genre of music well as it is quite upbeat.
Editing- A lot of jump cuts and tracking/panning shots are used in the
video which keeps the scene flowing and fast paced which conforms to
the rock genre as most rock artists want to keep their videos upbeat and
flowing to resemble their music and to also keep the audience
entertained and looking around the screen. Slow motion is also used to
emphasize the movements that are in the video and to give various
tempos in the video.
