The document provides analysis of the mise-en-scene, sound editing, and camera angles used in four music videos:
- Stormzy's "Scary" uses low-key lighting and candles to create a dark, scary theme fitting the song. Fast cuts are used when the beat speeds up.
- Calvin Harris' "Sweet Nothing" uses dark lighting to depict themes of abuse and violence. Ambient sounds are added to scenes to make them more realistic.
- Coldplay's "Paradise" features the main character in an elephant costume to narrate searching for paradise. Bright colors depict happiness.
- Techniques like continuity editing, eye line matching, and a variety of shots are

Music Video Analysis - Task 1
1. Music Video Mise en scene Sound Editing Camera Angles
Stormzy – Scary - Grime Throughout the entire video the there is use of
low key lighting to create a theme as well as to
illustrate the lyrics of the song. The video has lots
of lights for example candles are used to light the
face of the rapper and to have a theme of
darkness and almost scary the name of the song.
The clothes the rapper is wearing all relate to the
themes that are expressed by the genre of the
music, grime is very underground/urban and he is
mostly wearing track-suits and Adidas gear this
relates to the representations in this genre.
No use of any sound techniques, the music is the
only form of sound used within the video.
Fast cuts/ fast pace editing is used throughout
the video specifically when the songs beat
begins to speed up, this happens around a
minute into the video. Lots of visual effects
and unique transitions are used within the
video to allow the different scenes to flow well
for example the speed ramping of the scenes is
used to merge the scenes as well as the effects
such as the flashing and blurring of the shots.
The video consists of closes ups and
medium shots of the rapper. The
video has been put together very tight
and it feels like the video uses very
little wide shots and its shots are
cropped almost. This makes the video
very contained and more of a visual
video than a narrative video.
Calvin Harris - Sweet Nothing ft.
Florence Welch – Dance
This video also as with the previous video is very
darkly lit and it follows the themes that are
expressed in the video, in this case the themes
that are expressed are abuse and violence this is
why some of the scenes have been shot at night
rather than in the day time because they wanted
the lighting throughout the video to be
consistent. The clothing also follows the themes
in the video, that being the clothing is dark
colours, the two main characters are wearing red
and black this could be as they wanted to
represent violence and danger which is also
shown in the video.
Sound has been used other than the music. The
beginning has use of ambient sound of traffic and
the sound that match the visuals of the man sitting
in a chip shop. This allows the viewer to understand
where the character is also makes the scene more
realistic for the viewer. Later in the video sound of
dialogue after the character this is to make the
narrative more relevant in the video also more
sound of the man being beaten up has been used to
make the scene more dramatic. The drop of music is
also timed well with when the character gets
punched, this is to make the scene more dramatic.
Generally editing is very fast paced this is due
to the fact that the music's beat is very fast
and the editing has been matched to the
speed of the song. Overall the video has been
editing in a way that we have main two
characters (the man in the chip shop, the
singer (musician) who is lip syncing), this gives
the viewer two storylines and toward the end
of the video they have cleverly merged the
two storylines into one. The video also
contains a few filler shots of extras to help
with the selection of shots and variety.
This video has a very wide range of
shots used, including; close up,
medium shot, establishing, panning,
wide angle and many more. These
different shots are used to help create
the interesting storylines and also
make the video more v visual. A
medium shot of one of the characters
chest is used to hide the identity of
the character, later it is revealed to be
the artist with a close up.
Coldplay – Paradise - Pop The video has a variety of locations/settings and
this helps with how the narrative is constructed.
The zoo is used to show where the character
(Elephant) starts off. The clothing of the main
character is a elephant suit/costume this is for
the narrative of the video as its about the
elephant finding paradise. Lots of bright colours
are presented throughout the video this could
relate to the type of music (Pop) and how its
about happiness and positivity.
No use of any sound techniques, the music is the
only form of sound used within the video.
The editing of this video is fairly basic and little
effects or techniques have been used to
represent the narrative or performance of the
band/artist. Although the opening scene is
important as it sets the scene of the story
being about how the elephant is seeking
paradise. About 50s in some lyrics are
displayed with cardboard cut outs and use of
continuity editing is within use. The use of eye
line match is apparent throughout certain
points as well as basic editing techniques
required to construct this narrative.
Once again this video contains a wide
range of shots including; wide angles,
medium shots, close ups, tracking
shots and more. These different
techniques and camera angles are all
used to construct the narrative and
also show the performance of the
band (Towards the end). The use of
live band footage is also apparent at
the end of the video, this is used to
show more of the performance side of
the song/lyrics.
