3. VARIETY OF CAMERA DISTANCE AND ANGLES
The camera distance in the video for “My number” is very varied with lots of different types of
shots being used. A long-shot is first used to introduce the band at the start of the video
because it gives the audience a view of the whole band, their costume and the type of
instruments they are playing, it helps establish the band and engage the audience from
the beginning. Close-up mid shots are used to show single band members playing their
instruments and this helps individuals to be focused on, for example, when a certain
guitar riff is played the camera will focus on the guitar player. The lead singer is
positioned in the centre of the stage and is also slightly further forward signifying that he
is the centrepiece of the band, it helps the audience to focus more on the lyrics and the
meaning behind the song. Extreme close-ups are also frequent throughout the video
which highlight the instruments and this helps to signify how important the instruments
are to this type of music genre. Towards the end of the video, the band are shown
performing live to an audience, the camera is positioned behind the audience and the
band are shown higher in the frame, this could suggest how audiences usually feel very
connected to the music.
4. USE OF THE CAMERA
Throughout the whole video, the camera movement is quite sharp and the
transitions between shots happen quickly. The shot transition is in time with
the music to help establish a rhythm throughout the video, this means that the
editing is consistent and the video runs through smoothly. When the whole
band is shown from a distance, the camera is still and focused straight at the
band, however, when the camera distance is closer to the band a handheld
camera is used and the angle is slightly canted. This could be used because
it gives a more personal viewpoint of the band and could help the audience to
feel as if they are more involved in the performance.
5. MISE-EN-SCENE AND LOCATIONS
The costume use in the video is appropriate for the indie-rock genre because the clothing
worn by the band members is quite simplistic, however it is still quite quirky which suits
the genre because the music style itself has a slightly different style to mainstream
music. However, the band could probably wear slightly more unique clothing to make
more of a statement and make their band stand out against the music, this would
probably stand out to audiences more. In terms of locations, there is not much variety
within the music video because the video is focused more on the performance of the
band. The main location shows the band performing in a garage which does suit the indie
genre because it is quite an unusual location for music to be played. The use of a garage
focuses the band together in a closed frame, suggesting their togetherness as a group.
Other locations are shown through the cut-to-narative where a female character is shown
walking through an urban area, this is used to show how the character is on her way to
the gig, which later on in the video shows the same character present as the band
performs live. The lighting used in the video is very bright, and this helps to draw the
band away from their surroundings, high key lighting is used on the main singer so that
the audience focus more on the lyrics of the music,
7. VARIETY OF CAMERA DISTANCE AND ANGLES
The camera distance throughout this music video changes more frequently due to the style of
the video, the themes of the video change throughout so the angles and distances of the
camera are constantly changing. At the beginning of the video, the girl band is introduced
with a mid-shot which introduces them to the audience, and each individual band
member is shown in a split screen. The camera focuses more on the lead singer as the
video progresses, showing her in a close-up at different angles. This emphasises the
emotion of the artist, showing her to be very energetic and excited about playing her
music. Long shots show the band as a whole as well as there setting around them, in this
videos long-shots are important because they allow us to see the change in themes as
the video progresses. The camera angle changes to a low angle shot as the chorus
changes to a more aggressive sounding rock beat. Whereas before the music was quite
quiet, the music suddenly becomes very loud, and the band are shown closer to the
camera and also higher up making them look more aggressive to the audience.
8. USE OF THE CAMERA
At the start of the video the camera is very still and transition between shots is
slower as the artists are introduced and the music beat is slower. However,
the camera movement because very quick later in the video as the verse
breaks into a rock style, the fast camera movements representing the wild
and loud sound associated with rock music. The movement of the camera
also matches the movement of the band, they become much more energetic
and move around a lot more during the rock verse, a handheld camera is
used to make the video feel more personal to the audience. Towards the end
of the video, the band show themselves in different costumes as different
themes are shown, the pace of the camera becomes very fast to show how
the band have represented different genres through the same music video.
9. MISE-EN-SCENE
Mise-en-scene is very important in this music video because the band are very visual, the
use of costume change helps the audience to understand the different genre changes.
The costume style starts out quite glamourous, it helps the band to stand out to the
audience perhaps through the “notions of looking”. The band are singing about getting
the attention of a male, so perhaps the girls start of with more make-up and shorter
clothing to make themselves appeal more attractive. However, as the theme transitions
into more of a rock theme, the costume changes to more casual clothing, such as
backwards caps and oversized t-shirts, this suits the indie-rock theme of music because
it shows the band don’t really care about what they wear, their outfit here has quite a
rebellious vibe to it, and this suits the music as the chorus sounds more aggressive. The
lighting is also very important, the lighting starts off very bright, highlighting the girls on
stage and making them seem more attractive. However, the lighting is very dark when
the music changes in the chorus, suggesting a more aggressive tone of music. The
middle segment of the video is shot in black and white which adds even more variety to
the video, this is a typical style of colour change which is shown in indie-rock music,
usually to highlight some form of emotion within the lyrics.
