2. The music video that I created for “skins” by The Cads is a linear narrative in which the story is not in chronological order
because it is not story based. The video is formed from an abstract style narrative (the memory scenes, the performance
scene and the drumming scenes) This narrative is circular as it goes back and forth to each scene throughout the video, the
narrative also ends in a similar way to the begging of the drummer cycling. Because of the 3 different acts and scenes this
creates a multi-strand narrative as there is more than one narrative presented.
Bathes concept provides a way of understanding that the protairtic code is used as a sense of motion which guides the
narreme along with the biking scenes. I have also used the concept of symbolic code in multiple ways, for instance the
drumming scene acts as a motif to the video which reflects on the characters passions. The images used for the memory
scenes create a youthful, childhood, having fun nostalgic symbolic aesthetic and style to the video. The bright flashing lights
are a symbolic code that presents the memory narrative. Finally, the Ferris wheel and trams in the memory scene works as a
symbolic function as it highlights the theme of travelling and movement, which empathises the excitement and livelihood of
youths.
The narrative device of prefiguring/ echoes and flashbacks is a narrative theme presented in my music video because of the
flashback memory scene footage which is continuously shown throughout the video. The sense of time is presented in my
music video because of the opening scene of the main character putting on his shoes, this symbolises the start of a new day.
There are many themes of strands presented in my music video for instance Creativity, youth/ adolescence/ childhood,
Nostalgic, traveling and motion and the music theme presented. All of these themes are an open structured narrative, as they
are unresolved and open to interpretation. However the travelling and motion scene is the only closed strand narrative
because of the final scene of him cycling into the distance, the slight turn of the bike symbolises that he’s going home and that
it’s the end of the day. Because there is only one strand of the narrative themes that is closed, over all the text is seen as an
open narrative which is an ambiguous ending. My music video links to this quote by Mikhael Shore “Music video director
make videos as ambiguous as possible, with just enough narrative or suggestive concept to draw a viewer in”.
