During the Reconstruction period after the Civil War, African Americans were granted legal freedoms but had to fight against white oppression to exercise those freedoms. Education became crucial for African Americans to gain true freedom and pride as it would provide the same opportunities as whites and tie together newly formed communities. Schools became the backbone of African American society and helped communities aggregate while also serving as the first stepping stone for African Americans entering politics.
