  6. Aaron Swartz – from one of the last known interviews – ‘The Internet’s Own Boy’ (2012)
  7. It aimed to identify where any boundaries might be for the institution in terms of using data as the basis for learning interventions. As this is an emerging area that the institution has yet to fully implement, there were difficulties in conveying potential applications and by extension, possible ethical pitfalls. With this in mind, a series of scenarios were provided to participants. These were designed as student personas, presenting both the subject’s ‘real’ story and also the information that the learning analytics system held in relation to their engagement with learning. Part of an example scenario is shown in Figure 1. These cases demonstrated to participants that data may not always provide the full picture of student engagement. They also stimulated discussion about how demographic data might be used by institutions and whether using algorithms to flag students who might need support is problematic. Also looked into what a participant would like a learning analytics system to include.
