2. PLITVICE LAKES
• The Plitvice Lakes National
Park is one of the oldest
and largest national
parks in Croatia.
• In 1979, The Plitvice
Lakes National Park was
added to the UNESCO
World Heritage register.
3. • The beauty of the National Park lies in its
sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of
waterfalls, and set in deep woodland
populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and
rare bird species.
4. WHERE IS IT?
• The Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in
the middle of the country and is about 130 km
from the capital, Zagreb
5. THE FORMATION OF PLITVICE LAKES
The waters flew over the limestone and chalk
for thousands of years depositing travertine
barriers, creating natural dams which in turn
created a series of beautiful lakes, caves
and waterfalls.
6. A Legend of the Black Queen
• According to the legend, a long time ago there
was a severe drought which caused great
damage – the cattle died, crops were damaged
and people
starved to death.
7. • In despair, people decided to pray to the Black
Queen: ‘Help us and send rain!’ And then, the
Black Queen turned to her people with
comforting words: ‘I am sad to see that you
are suffering!
Afterwards, it was
raining heavily for
days, the water grew higher and
higher until it
created the 13 lakes.
8. • The story goes that the Queen was crying, and
her black and white tears were rolling down
her cheeks forming the Black River and the
White River.
The two rivers still flow above
the Upper Lakes and into the
Matica River forming the first
lake named Prošćansko (after
the begging of the people for
water, prošnja = prayer).
9. • The people built a castle for the Black Queen on the hill
above Kozjak, as a symbol of gratitude for saving them
from draught and gifting them with an abundance of
water.
• The good queen watched over the Plitvice Lakes from her
new castle and
continued helping
people whenever
they faced
difficulties.
10. • The story is told to many visitors who come to
the same conclusion that a place so beautiful
and splendid can only be created by magic.
