Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are fragments of cell cytoplasm that help form blood clots. They prevent excessive bleeding by forming a physical barrier at the site of an injury. When tissue is damaged, platelets and thrombokinase are released, starting a process where prothrombin is converted to thrombin and fibrinogen is converted to fibrin threads, forming a mesh that seals the wound. Blood transports oxygen, nutrients, waste, hormones, and more between organs and tissues using red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets as key components.
