Plants have the ability to detect light and grow towards it due to different elongation rates in their stems. The students hypothesized that bean seeds planted horizontally and vertically would grow differently, with water causing horizontal growth and light causing vertical growth. They designed an experiment to test this by planting bean seeds and observing their direction of growth in response to light and water.
