Pedagogy of School Subject - History
Place of Humanities and Social Sciences in the present school
curriculum
 The Humanities and Social Sciences are the study of human
behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental,
economic and political contexts.
 They have a historical and contemporary focus, from personal
to global contexts, and consider challenges for the future.
Basics of Academic Discipline
 The humanities include the study of ancient and modern
languages, literature, philosophy, history, archaeology,
anthropology, human geography, law, politics, religion, and art.
Scholars in the humanities are "humanity scholars" or
humanists
 Humanities is a broad academic field under which students
study various types of human interactions, using methods that
are largely analytical, critical or exploratory.
 But Humanities Honor’s is an interdisciplinary major drawing
from literature, foreign languages, history, philosophy, visual
art and music along with a tactic for the study of cultural and
intellectual history.
 Humanities contains something explicit to explore in itself.
 As it serves several disciplines where human beings and the
society focus on different kinds of studies.
 Humanities is also referred to ‘Integrated Humanities’ which
states this stream as the study of these humanities subjects:
 History
 Geography
 Religious Education
 Sociology
 Psychology
 Government and Politics
 Law
 Educational Structure in India:
Humanities in India is taught at the school level as
intermediate (10+2), College level as Bachelors and at the
universities it’s taught to award Master degree and Ph.D. Apart
from universities India has various institutes catering to any
specific area of Humanities as well. Check out the career options
for various subjects in humanities below:
 School Level:
Humanities in Intermediate level (10+2) is studied under Arts as
a stream. Major subjects taught during intermediate are:
 Political Science
 Hindi (depending upon the board)
 History
 Geography
 English
 Sociology etc.
 History as a subject is studied because it is essential to
individuals and to society to understand the growth of human
civilization and the local culture what the society or the
individual practices History harbors beauty.
 In past history, It has been justified for its own reasons. It
makes us understand changes and makes us think that how our
society came into existence.
 However, the importance of history in explaining and
understanding change in human behavior is no mere
abstraction.
 Students therefore, study it as a subject to explore various
cultures, trends and traditions.
Humanities and Social Sciences learning area comprises
four subjects:
 History,
 Geography,
 Economics and Business,
 Civics and Citizenship.
Through studying Humanities and Social Sciences
students will develop:
 The ability to question,
Think critically,
 Solve problems,
Communicate effectively,
 Make decisions
Adapt to change
 The History syllabus focuses on a detailed study of some
themes in ancient, medieval and modern Indian history. The
object of the curriculum is to study a set of these themes in
detail. The course is built on the knowledge that the students
have acquired in the earlier classes.
Political Science :
 The syllabus of Political Science has made in a way that it enables students to
understand the historical processes in which the Constitution was drafted. It
helps the learners to get familiarize with the certain key features of the
Constitution and compare these to other constitutions in the world.
 The Political Science syllabus divided into two parts i.e., Contemporary World
Politics and Politics in India since Independence.
Part A :
Contemporary World Politics includes units such as Cold
War Era, The End of bipolarity, US Hegemony in World Politics,
Alternative centers of Power, Contemporary South Asia,
International Organizations, Security in Contemporary World,
Environment and Natural Resources, and Globalization.

Part B :
Politics in India since Independence consists of units which
are Challenges of Nation-Building, Era of One-party Dominance,
Politics of Planned Development, India's External relations,
Challenges to the Congress System, Crisis of the Democratic Order,
Rise of Popular Movements, Regional aspirations, and Recent
Developments in Indian Politics.
The importance of Social Studies in the School
curriculum:
 The answers to the above questions can be found when we
understand what exactly is,
 Social Studies – Social Science is a branch of study which deals with
Human Beings – their behaviour, growth and development,
relationships, resources they use and the various institutions they
require to function and carry on their life smoothly. For example –
family, school, workplace, government, judiciary, recreation clubs,
etc.
 All these aspects of life are inter-related and interdependent on one
another.
 The inclusion of Social Studies in the curriculum right from
primary to secondary classes signifies the importance of the
subject and the role it plays in a student’s life.
 Social Studies is incorporated in the school curriculum through
a combination of subjects like – History,
 Geography,
 Cultural Studies,
 Economics,
 Political Science,
 Sociology,
 Psychology,
 Anthropology, etc.
These subjects help children to develop-
1. Awareness of The World and Environment
2. Helps to Develop Critical Thinking Abilities
3. Helps to Enhance the Social Understanding Of Students
4. Helps Students To Become Better Citizens
Thus, we can conclude that incorporating Social Studies in the
school curriculum ensures well rounded education of the students.
 Teaching of Social Science help the students to
understand:
1. The society in which they live,
2. To appreciate values enshrined in the Indian Constitution
such as justice, liberty, equality and fraternity and the unity
and integrity of the nation and building of a socialist, secular
and democratic society,
3. to grow up like a responsible and active member of the society
4. t0 learn to respect differences of opinions, lifestyles and cultural
practices
5.to acquire pleasure in reading by providing the reading material
6. to undertake various activities that will help them to develop social
and life skills which are important for social interaction
7. in textbook and in classrooms the content, language and images
should be comprehensive, gender sensitive and critical
of social hierarchies and inequalities of all kinds.
At secondary level: (Catering to objectives):
 Understand the processes of economic and social change and
development with
eg. of modern and contemporary India and other parts of the world,
 critically examine social and economic issues,
 Understand the rights and responsibilities of the state,
 Appreciate the rights of local communities in relation to their
environment, judicious utilization of resources as well as the need for
the conservation of resources.
In History:
 The contributions of various sections / regions to India’s
freedom struggle can be studied and the other aspects of
recent history in context of developments in modern world.
 In History and Geography, students explore the processes that
have shaped and which continue to shape different societies
and cultures, to appreciate the common humanity shared
across time and distance, and to evaluate the ways in which
humans have faced and continue to face different challenges

Place of Humanities and Social Sciences in the present school curriculum  The Humanities and Social Sciences are the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts.  They have a historical and contemporary focus, from personal to global contexts, and consider challenges for the future.   • 3.  The humanities include the study of ancient and modern languages, literature, philosophy, history, archaeology, anthropology, human geography, law, politics, religion, and art. Scholars in the humanities are "humanity scholars" or humanists
  • 4.  Humanities is a broad academic field under which students study various types of human interactions, using methods that are largely analytical, critical or exploratory.  But Humanities Honor’s is an interdisciplinary major drawing from literature, foreign languages, history, philosophy, visual art and music along with a tactic for the study of cultural and intellectual history.
  • 5.  Humanities contains something explicit to explore in itself.  As it serves several disciplines where human beings and the society focus on different kinds of studies.  Humanities is also referred to ‘Integrated Humanities’ which states this stream as the study of these humanities subjects:
  • 6.  History  Geography  Religious Education  Sociology  Psychology  Government and Politics  Law
  • 7.  Educational Structure in India: Humanities in India is taught at the school level as intermediate (10+2), College level as Bachelors and at the universities it’s taught to award Master degree and Ph.D. Apart from universities India has various institutes catering to any specific area of Humanities as well.   • 8.  School Level: Humanities in Intermediate level (10+2) is studied under Arts as a stream. Major subjects taught during intermediate are:  Political Science  Hindi (depending upon the board)  History  Geography  English  Sociology etc.
  • 9.  History as a subject is studied because it is essential to individuals and to society to understand the growth of human civilization and the local culture what the society or the individual practices History harbors beauty.  In past history, It has been justified for its own reasons. It makes us understand changes and makes us think that how our society came into existence.
  • 10.  However, the importance of history in explaining and understanding change in human behavior is no mere abstraction.  Students therefore, study it as a subject to explore various cultures, trends and traditions.
  • 11. Humanities and Social Sciences learning area comprises four subjects:  History,  Geography,  Economics and Business,  Civics and Citizenship.
  • 12. Through studying Humanities and Social Sciences students will develop:  The ability to question, Think critically,  Solve problems, Communicate effectively,  Make decisions Adapt to change
  • 13.  The History syllabus focuses on a detailed study of some themes in ancient, medieval and modern Indian history. The object of the curriculum is to study a set of these themes in detail. The course is built on the knowledge that the students have acquired in the earlier classes.
  • 14. Political Science :  The syllabus of Political Science has made in a way that it enables students to understand the historical processes in which the Constitution was drafted. It helps the learners to get familiarize with the certain key features of the Constitution and compare these to other constitutions in the world.  The Political Science syllabus divided into two parts i.e., Contemporary World Politics and Politics in India since Independence.
  • 15. Part A : Contemporary World Politics includes units such as Cold War Era, The End of bipolarity, US Hegemony in World Politics, Alternative centers of Power, Contemporary South Asia, International Organizations, Security in Contemporary World, Environment and Natural Resources, and Globalization. 
  • 16. Part B : Politics in India since Independence consists of units which are Challenges of Nation-Building, Era of One-party Dominance, Politics of Planned Development, India's External relations, Challenges to the Congress System, Crisis of the Democratic Order, Rise of Popular Movements, Regional aspirations, and Recent Developments in Indian Politics.
  • 17. The importance of Social Studies in the School curriculum:  The answers to the above questions can be found when we understand what exactly is,  Social Studies – Social Science is a branch of study which deals with Human Beings – their behaviour, growth and development, relationships, resources they use and the various institutions they require to function and carry on their life smoothly. For example – family, school, workplace, government, judiciary, recreation clubs, etc.  All these aspects of life are inter-related and interdependent on one another.
  • 18.  The inclusion of Social Studies in the curriculum right from primary to secondary classes signifies the importance of the subject and the role it plays in a student’s life.  Social Studies is incorporated in the school curriculum through a combination of subjects like – History,  Geography,  Cultural Studies,  Economics,  Political Science,  Sociology,  Psychology,  Anthropology, etc.
  • 19. These subjects help children to develop- 1. Awareness of The World and Environment 2. Helps to Develop Critical Thinking Abilities 3. Helps to Enhance the Social Understanding Of Students 4. Helps Students To Become Better Citizens Thus, we can conclude that incorporating Social Studies in the school curriculum ensures well rounded education of the students.
  • 20.  Teaching of Social Science help the students to understand: 1. The society in which they live, 2. To appreciate values enshrined in the Indian Constitution such as justice, liberty, equality and fraternity and the unity and integrity of the nation and building of a socialist, secular and democratic society,
  • 21. 3. to grow up like a responsible and active member of the society 4. t0 learn to respect differences of opinions, lifestyles and cultural practices 5.to acquire pleasure in reading by providing the reading material 6. to undertake various activities that will help them to develop social and life skills which are important for social interaction 7. in textbook and in classrooms the content, language and images should be comprehensive, gender sensitive and critical of social hierarchies and inequalities of all kinds.
  • 22. At secondary level: (Catering to objectives):  Understand the processes of economic and social change and development with eg. of modern and contemporary India and other parts of the world,  critically examine social and economic issues,  Understand the rights and responsibilities of the state,  Appreciate the rights of local communities in relation to their environment, judicious utilization of resources as well as the need for the conservation of resources.
  • 23. In History:  The contributions of various sections / regions to India’s freedom struggle can be studied and the other aspects of recent history in context of developments in modern world.
  • 24.  In History and Geography, students explore the processes that have shaped and which continue to shape different societies and cultures, to appreciate the common humanity shared across time and distance, and to evaluate the ways in which humans have faced and continue to face different challenges
