Pitch
“We all die trying to get it right”
Idea
The music video is a love story from when they
were children. The story then develops from them
playing as children in different places such as the
forest into them growing up and the woman
starting to suffer with mental health issues. Near
the end of the video, there will be scenes depicting
ideas revolving around suicide. This then links to
the songs name, so the video is then shown as
illustrative. There are intertextual references and
links to the indie genre that I’ll be discussing.
Communicating genre &
Introducing artists and representation
• The genre is a mixture of both indie rock and indie folk
so this will then appeal to a younger and older
demographic, this then full fills the brief because it
then targeted at the age range
• There will be typical iconography including the guitar
that the artist plays during the long shots which fits
with the music
• The setting will be based in a forest and house which is
easily accessible when making the music video
• There will be low lighting in the house and the forest is
a rural area to represent the typical colour codes of an
indie video
Communicating genre &
Introducing artists and representation
• There's artist involvement in which he will appear in different frames
throughout the video
• The video will constantly cut from the narrative to the artist singing
• The artist is the character in the video so he is signing about his own
experience
• The representation of the artist then links back to the genre because
direct mode of address is used to discuss the social and personal problems
that have been experienced as well as it shown within the narrative, so
the audience may be able to relate to the artist
• There will be close up shots of the artist so the audience could identify
with the artist as it becomes more personal but also long shots, these will
show the costume of a flannel shirt and jeans to depict the typical
iconography of the artists genre
Setting pace, rhythm and tone
• The timings of the video are on the timeline
however this was just a guide for the order of the
video
• I then improved the timings within my story
board where there is now a second by second
plan of what happens in each frame, this has
been shown in the storyboard previously shown
• The rhythm goes with the visuals because the
change of the lyrics will usually change the frame
of the video
Target audience appeal
Focus group
(I discussed my idea with a group of mixed ages after handing out my
questionnaires and asked for feedback on the advantages and disadvantages
that could help improve my idea)
Advantages
• The idea is very illustrative with the narrative
explicitly representing the lyrics and also linking to
the name of the song
• The intertextual reference, which will be ‘Forest
Gump’, is recognisable with the age range especially
with the older demographic
• For the younger demographic, they may be able to
relate to the mental health issues shown and then
are more likely to buy into the artist due to their
beliefs and issues that's discussed
Target audience appeal
Focus groups
Disadvantages
• The end scene involves falling off a roof which seems
unrealistic to film in a setting that looks real
Improvement = Fall of a ledge near the ground at a low
angle of the camera in order to give the effect of it being
at a high up building
• Using children in the music video may be difficult in
order for them to pay attention and not get distracted
Improvement = Use short clips of the children in each
frame so that they don’t lack concertation and the shots
are able to be filmed
Target audience appeal
Examples of questions from my questionnaire that helped with my ideas
and what information to focus on within the focus groups
Institutional context
• The record label that could be used for the
artist is Domino Records
• This is because it’s an independent record
label that popular and successful artists have
worked with
• This could help with the popularity of the
artist and increase the number of music
downloads
