In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Convention #1: (Video)
Often music videos in the genre of pop rock feature
a narrative that features the artist.
- The artist will play a fictional character in the
narrative, which involves them acting a role in the
video.
- Or, the artist will portray themselves to show their
own experiences in life, which will often involve
very personal experiences.
Our video uses this convention strongly, the artist
performer is the main male character within the
narrative.
Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos often feature the artist/band member performing in a narrative as
either a fictional character or to show their own real experiences.

Convention #2: (Video)
Often music videos in the genre of pop rock feature
a strong, confident performance aspect.
Confident artists often include them performing the
song, as it encourages viewer’s to feel connected
and go and see them live.
These performances are also usually performed
within an interior setting with effective lighting, in
order to highlight how natural their singing is.
Our video uses this convention strongly, the artist
performer is very confident and we have utilised a
strong performance aspect in our video.
The artists not only lip syncs the song confidently
but also incorporates small dance moves
throughout the video.
Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos usually feature very strong performances with confident
performers as it helps to draw in the viewer and make them feel more connected to artist.

Convention #3: (Video)
Pop rock music videos that feature narratives are
often based off of storylines that target everyday
problems and issues.
This allows more audiences to relate to the story
and become more engaged in the narrative which
leads to more enjoyment.
Our video challenges this convention as our
narrative revolves around the unique and quirky
concept of time travel/portals.
This is not an ‘everyday issue’ and utilises a very
different concept.
However, it does focus on the feelings of love and
emotion of the male towards the female, so it can
be seen that we are using this convention in some
way.
Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos that feature a narrative aspect usually base the story on everyday
issues like relationships, love and common problems that people experience.

Convention #4: (Digipak)
Pop rock/alternative rock digipaks often include
images of the artist/band members.
These images usually either show their style of
performance, or show the instruments/props that
they use.
Our digipak uses this convention we have included
images of our artist, not only on his own, but also
with the his unique old fashioned microphone.
Pop rock/Alternative rock album digipaks often feature a collection of photos that showcase the
artist/band members with their instruments or iconic props.

Convention #5: (Magazine Advert)
Pop rock/alternative rock often have magazine
adverts that are simplistic, using very basic
colouring in order to emphasise the artist/band.
Black and white colour schemes often make the
artist more prominent and important as the
audiences naturally focus on them rather than any
extravagant colours.
Our magazine uses this convention as we have
created an advert that utilises very basic and
limited colours and revolves around lighting.
Our advert does not feature any extravagant colour
as we wished to create a simplistic look that
focuses on the artist.
Pop rock/Alternative rock album magazine adverts often feature limited colour schemes, they are often
quite plainly coloured as the focus is on the artist rather than the colour scheme.

  • 1. Evaluation Question 1: BY LUCA CHAPMAN In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 2. Convention #1: (Video) Often music videos in the genre of pop rock feature a narrative that features the artist. - The artist will play a fictional character in the narrative, which involves them acting a role in the video. - Or, the artist will portray themselves to show their own experiences in life, which will often involve very personal experiences. Our video uses this convention strongly, the artist performer is the main male character within the narrative. Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos often feature the artist/band member performing in a narrative as either a fictional character or to show their own real experiences. Our Video (OneRepublic): Maroon 5 (Pop Rock) – Animals: Kings of Leon (Pop rock) – The Final Chapter, Reverend: Artist plays fictional character in narrative, Band members play fictional characters in narrative
  • 3. Convention #2: (Video) Often music videos in the genre of pop rock feature a strong, confident performance aspect. Confident artists often include them performing the song, as it encourages viewer’s to feel connected and go and see them live. These performances are also usually performed within an interior setting with effective lighting, in order to highlight how natural their singing is. Our video uses this convention strongly, the artist performer is very confident and we have utilised a strong performance aspect in our video. The artists not only lip syncs the song confidently but also incorporates small dance moves throughout the video. Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos usually feature very strong performances with confident performers as it helps to draw in the viewer and make them feel more connected to artist.   • 4. Convention #3: (Video) Pop rock music videos that feature narratives are often based off of storylines that target everyday problems and issues. This allows more audiences to relate to the story and become more engaged in the narrative which leads to more enjoyment. Our video challenges this convention as our narrative revolves around the unique and quirky concept of time travel/portals. This is not an ‘everyday issue’ and utilises a very different concept. However, it does focus on the feelings of love and emotion of the male towards the female, so it can be seen that we are using this convention in some way. Pop rock/Alternative rock music videos that feature a narrative aspect usually base the story on everyday issues like relationships, love and common problems that people experience.   • 5. Convention #4: (Digipak) Pop rock/alternative rock digipaks often include images of the artist/band members. These images usually either show their style of performance, or show the instruments/props that they use. Our digipak uses this convention we have included images of our artist, not only on his own, but also with the his unique old fashioned microphone. Pop rock/Alternative rock album digipaks often feature a collection of photos that showcase the artist/band members with their instruments or iconic props.   • 6. Convention #5: (Magazine Advert) Pop rock/alternative rock often have magazine adverts that are simplistic, using very basic colouring in order to emphasise the artist/band. Black and white colour schemes often make the artist more prominent and important as the audiences naturally focus on them rather than any extravagant colours. Our magazine uses this convention as we have created an advert that utilises very basic and limited colours and revolves around lighting. Our advert does not feature any extravagant colour as we wished to create a simplistic look that focuses on the artist. Pop rock/Alternative rock album magazine adverts often feature limited colour schemes, they are often quite plainly coloured as the focus is on the artist rather than the colour scheme.
