Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) provides a sensitive and precise method for stable isotope analysis of food and beverage samples. It can detect adulteration and determine geographic origins through stable isotope signatures. CRDS systems are small, low-cost, easy to use, and provide results comparable to more expensive isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Example analyses show CRDS can distinguish between honey samples, detect honey adulterated with corn syrup, and identify the origin of orange juice, olive oil, and sparkling water samples.

Recently (November 2014), threats in the form of letters were sent to farming and dairy industry leaders in New Zealand. The letters were accompanied by small packages of milk powder that were shown to contain a concentrated form of the pesticide 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). The sender demanded that the New Zealand government stop using 1080 for pest control. Sodium fluoroacetate is used to protect New Zealand’s native flora and fauna against introduced pests like possums and ferrets. Opponents, however, argue that it also kills native animals and contaminates the environment.1-2 Such criminal threats are a potential danger and weaken consumers’ trust in the food supply chain. Accurate and reliable analytical methods are needed to monitor food ingredients and final products to ensure food safety in light of this threat. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is an ideal analytical technique to detect polar analytes in complex food samples. Here we present first results of method development to detect sodium fluoroacetate in milk and infant formula. The sample preparation protocol consists of a simple acetonitrile extraction and defatting using hexane. LC separation was achieved using a HILIC column in normal phase mode. The mass spectrometer was operated in Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode. In MRM mode the transition of a molecular ion into a characteristic fragment ion is monitored. The monitoring of more than a single fragment ion allows not only quantitation but also highly confident identification based on the ratio between quantifier and qualifier transitions. Initial studies show that sodium fluoroacetate can be detected at concentrations below 1 ng/mL (below 10 ng/mL in matrix) using the SCIEX QTRAP® 4500 system, with good accuracy and repeatability. Linearity for quantitation was achieved over 3 orders of magnitude (0.1 to 100 ng/mL). Future experiments are planned to further increase sensitivity, simplify sample preparation and to include an internal standard to correct low recoveries and matrix effects.

SIFT-MS accurately identifies and quantifies volatile compounds. The analysis occurs through a process of chemical ionization in a flow tube. To analyze volatile compounds, a sample is introduced into the flow tube at a precisely controlled rate. Inside the flow tube reagent ions react with volatile compounds present in the sample. This reaction forms product ions, which are analyzed by a quadrupole mass spectrometer and particle multiplier. The result is spectra, which instantly identify and quantify volatile compounds. Analysis is performed by a Voice Series instrument, which can be based in a laboratory, on a production line, or in a vehicle. Using Solid Phase Microextraction for Cannabis Testing

In the quickly changing landscape of cannabis testing, laboratories are faced with the challenge of providing accurate results for a variety of different tests on challenging matrices. The wide variety of matrices encountered, including both plants, foods, and oily extracts, have complex chemical compositions which include pigments, fats, proteins and sugars. The sample preparation methods used must provide analyses free of these interferences for accurate and robust testing. In this seminar, we will present simple and effective sample preparation and analysis methods using solid phase microextraction (SPME) for determination of residual solvents and terpenes. SPME is a solvent-less extraction technique that is quantitative, sensitive, cost effective, and easy to automate. We will describe how to use SPME to cleanly, accurately and quantitatively determine residual solvents from hemp extract and terpenes from cannabis plant material. For both applications, descriptions of the method procedure along with data showing accuracy and reproducibility will be presented.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers, beverage, food and other liquid containers, thermoforming applications and engineering resins. Depending on its processing and thermal history, PET may exist both as an amorphous and as a semi-crystalline polymer. Polymerization is through a polycondensation reaction of the monomer ethylene terephthalate with water as the byproduct.The majority of the world's PET production is for synthetic fibers with bottle production accounting for around 30% of global demand. The polyester industry makes up about 18% of world polymer production and is third after polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Mechanical recycling of PET becomes more and more economically valuable due to the growing environmental awareness of the (Western) customer. The possibility of using recycled PET which will come into contact with food creates the need to develop efficient and sensitive analytical methods applicable to the identification and quantification of contaminants from recycled PET, which would also evidence that this recycled material complies with the terms of legislation. The recycling processes of PET for direct food contact have to evidence efficiency of contaminant removal and ensure consumer protection.

Food fraud is on the increase globally and checking for the authenticity of foodstuffs is a major challenge. Typical of food fraud is the substitution of a low value product for a higher value one to increase profit to the trader. For years, traders have been passing off a lesser quality rice, CSR 30, as the world's finest long-grained, aromatic rice, Basmati, in key markets like the US, Canada and the EU. In the process, the rice exports enjoy the duty exemption accorded to pure Basmati in the EU and thousands of consumers get duped. This presentation describes the use of Atmospheric Pressure Gas Chromatography coupled to high resolution MS to differentiate between types of rice and to identify marker compounds using statistical analysis software.

Determination of Carbohydrates in Various Matrices by Capillary High-Performance Anion-Exchange Chromatography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection (HPAE-PAD) This presentation describes the combined advantages of a reagent-free capillary format Ion Chromatography (IC) to determine monosaccharides and disaccharides in various applications, from low concentrations in synthetic urine samples to high concentrations in beverage samples. In a reagent-free IC system, the hydroxide eluent is electrolytically generated inline to deliver accurate and precise concentrations for isocratic or gradient separations by only adding deionized water. Eluent generation eliminates carbonate contamination and errors from manual preparation. A capillary scale system with µL/min flow rates can run 24/7, always on and always ready for samples.

Determination of Etodolac in Commercial Formulations by HPLC-UV Method

The aim of this study was to develop and verify a simple, rapid and sensitive high performance liquid chromatography method coupled with UV detector HPLC UV method for the quantitative determination of etodolac in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage forms. Chromatographic separation was performed at ambient conditions on a reverse phase ACE C8 analytical column 250 mm x 4.6 mm ID, 5 umm using the mobile phase containing acetonitrile water 80 20, v v at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min 1. A wavelength of 272 nm was used for etodolok and paracetamol IS . A retention time of 4.21 min and 2.02 min were obtained for etodolac and IS, respectively. The method showed linearity in the range of 0.08 10 Âµg mL 1 for etodolac R = 0.9999 . The linear regression equations obtained by least square regression method were the ratio of peak area of etodolac and IS =1.559 concentration etodolac Âµg mL 0.139. The intra day and inter day RE and RSD values of the method were =10.0 and =2.65 , respectively. Limit of detection LOD and limit of quantification LOQ were found to be 0.04 and 0.06 Âµg mL 1 for etodolac, respectively. A new, simple and sensitive high performance liquid chromatography method was developed and validated for etodolac. The method can be applied for the quantification of etodolac without derivatization in bulk solutions and commercial formulations using the internal standard. Globally, regulations vary, but current maximum allowable levels are as low as 100 μg/g (100 ppm). This application note presents a UHPLC method for the analysis of the ten most common phenolic antioxidants that may be found in such products.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
