WelcomeIntroduce myselfOutline of the presentation – 2 degree courses. Some commonality but also a unique identity. You are making a significant ‘life choice’ and it needs to be right for you.I will endevour to provide information, advice and guidance regarding each course to help you make that decision.
What are the overarching aims of the course?Degree + Vocational qualificationPreparation for teaching in 21st Century SchoolsA changing environment (Academies, free schools, Maintained schools etc) and demands on teachers (new curriculum – National / School, Behaviour etc)BAQTS aims to develop;Independent, reflective learners (thinkers)Focus on deep (transformative) learning.Ability to face challenges and opportunities ahead.Difference to other routes into teaching – compare with 3y + PGCE, GTP, Schools Direct.
BA PE QTS provides; The opportunity to specialise in PE resulting in confident, competent individuals, able to deliver excellence in schools.A key feature of the course involves the development of an Educational Philosophy and Professional Identity (how do you see yourself as a teacher?)You will not only know how to drive forward PE in schools but there is significant evidence of the number of PE teachers who go onto leadership / wider educational roles – as said; a lifetime qualification but also a lifetime of continuing professional development.Students experience 2 placements.
Explain the course structure.Y1 + 2 Academic and Practical. Broad to build on strengths and develop weakness.Note Y2 placement – speak in following slide.
Explain course structure.Y3 + 4 Choice and specialist routes. PlacementsPlacement information;Contrasting schools to give range of experience (aiding choice of jobs/school on graduation)Location (Home v Eastbourne)Support – Mentor, University Tutors, Visits, Communication)All schools are Accredited Placement schools working in partnership with the University ensuring Quality Assurance
I have explained why you should choose the University of Brighton;Others agree:OfSTED Grade 1TA 44 QTS places – more than any other institutionHigh retention rates reflect the quality of the course.98% satisfaction NSSEmployment rates (if you are going to get a degree, get one from the best!)
Crucially the BA PE QTS qualifies you for becoming a TEACHER and therefore able to respond to changing policy, circumstances while still delivering HQ learning opportunities. Our principle responsibility (National (school) curriculum). But how do you make lessons engaging, inspiring and challenging for ALL pupils? What makes HQPE, how do we recognise and interpret this?We are in a period of change in schools with Government Reforms altering the way pupils study and the assessment of qualifications. When you qualify schools will be teaching to the English Baccalaureate Certificate. We do not yet know the form of examinations for subjects that sit outside of the core 5 (EMSLGorH) but PE remains one of the Foundation subjects, therefore delivered to all pupils with an examination option.PE will hold its place and significance as an accredited course. Careers in Sport are numerous and the numbers of young people wanting to enter a sport related profession continues to grow (you are evidence of this).3. E/C PE – probably the bit you remember the most.Hidden curriculum, routes and pathways to learning.Demonstrates the special relationship PE teachers have with their pupils (privilage)4. The need for interpersonal skills.PE teacher works in partnership (multi agency work, community liaison) and finds wider opportunities.
4. Club links, primary liaison, ‘off-site’ PE, external coaches, enrichment days, sports days, team building, activity holidays etc…5. The wider role of the PE teacher – safeguarding, care for vulnerable children.6. You will need to be,OrganisedCreativeEnthusiasticHave boundless energyCommunication skillsEtc…

Talk through the philosophy underpinning the PE degree.Physical Education sits within the discipline of Social Sciences. It involves the ‘broad’ study of physical education; its nature and values. Yet with opportunities to pursue areas of personal interest in depth. There are three main areas for consideration; people, culture and environment (talk through) – PE is inclusive of age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background. The study of physical education is underpinned by understanding how learning occurs and is influenced by different factors that determine how individuals engage with their ‘life world’. (Cognitively, Affectively, Socially) and their lived experience of PE.As students of physical education you need to question and be critical of these influences, how they impact upon individuals (and groups) and define our life long relationship with PE, sport, health and fitness.
You all are passionate about PE and it is our purpose to deliver opportunities to examine PE, to academically challenge you and provide bespoke routes and pathways to support personal interests and vocational ambition. From birth to death, physical education impacts on all ages and stages of life. How do we learn? What physical challenges face an under 5, 14yr old, newly disabled crash victim, pregnant woman, retired arthritic? How do people engage with physical education? During and beyond school age?Learning develops knowledge, skills and understanding of pedagogy, in multiple contexts and focuses on your professional development. This is more than just a degree; you have work based placements and vocational opportunities ahead (organised and voluntary). So where do you see yourself in 5 yrs time? You will have your qualification, but what doors do you want it to open? Teacher, military, owning your own buisiness, working with SEND?...In addition to degree specific knowledge you will develop transferable skills that aid your learning and ensure your employability
Academic – theoretical and practical study of physical educationHands on – work based placements and volunteering opportunities (that reflect your ambition).
You MUST be physicall competent.Currently no formal interviews are required for this degree but this is under review. BUT, if you apply for bot QTS and PE your interview will enable you to demonstrate your ability.
Year 1 – Foundation. Choose 5 of 6 practical modules. Depending on your personal interests and career choices either pursue areas of excellence or develop an area of weakness. (You will have an academic tutor who will help guide your decision making).Year 2 – Deepening knowledge.Extending (and building upon) y1 learning in core modules. Choice from across SSaSM degree portfolio creating a bespoke and personal pathway.Year 3DissertationWork based placementChoice.
