Philosophies of Education
1. Which branch or branches of philosophy would you want to emphasize in your
classroom? Why?
I will not just choose only one branch of philosophy to emphasize in my
classroom instead I will choose all the three branches of philosophy such as; Metaphysics,
Epistemology and Axiology because according to what I have read, these branches of
philosophy cater all the positive aspects of reality that each individual must learn and must
possess. I want to emphasize Metaphysics in my classroom in order for the students to learn
the nature of everything around them that is present in the reality and how they exist and what
are their benefits for the humanity and for them to develop their higher order thinking skills. I
will also want to emphasize Epistemology in my classroom because I want my students to know
how they will learn something that they want to learn. What are those things to consider in
learning something; I want them to know what knowledge is all about for them to discriminate
the two situations; are they really acquiring knowledge? Or just gathering data or information? I
will also want to emphasize Axiology in my classroom because I want my students to know how
to give value everything that God has made for us.
2. Which general or world view philosophy best fits with your own views of reality? Why?
The world view philosophy that best fits with my own views of reality is Existentialism
because it states that the nature of reality is subjective and lies on the individual. My own view
of reality is “reality is what you perceived as real for you”. What I mean is reality depends on
the perception of every individual or on how he/she’s going to define it. It depends on our
choice and we must take our responsibility for deciding who we are because we have a
“freedom” to choose. God has given us the freedom and freewill to choose and to decide for
ourselves. It depends on every individual on how he/she’s going to exercise his/her freedom.
We are free to decide for ourselves as long as we are comfortable for it. Your destiny is what
you have chosen and it matters about your personal choice. As long as you know what you are
doing and it brings benefits for you and it makes you comfortable then go for it. The real
answers for your queries come from you since you have the power and you have the
responsibility to decide for yourselves to develop your characters. In short, reality depends on
everybody. It might be that my reality might differ from your reality because we differ in ways
how on we perceive things around us. Thus, reality according to Existentialists is subjective
which means that it relies on the choice of individual. In teaching the students, the students’
abilities should be considered. In generating opportunities for character development, self-
direction and self-actualization, it should start from the students rather than the Curriculum
content. They should take consideration about the students.
3. Each of the educational philosophies relates to one or more of the metaphysical world
view philosophies. What connections do you see?
Progressivism relates to Pragmatism, since progressivism stresses that students test
ideas by active experimentation and that learning is rooted in the questions of learners that
arise through experiencing the world. The pragmatism or experimentalism stresses teaching
methods focus on hands-on problem solving, experimenting, and projects. The pragmatists
believe that learners should apply their knowledge to real life situations through experimental
inquiry. The progressivism relates to pragmatism since they both emphasize learning through
experimenting. It means that students acquire knowledge and apply their knowledge through
experimental inquiry and experiencing the world. The students here are active participant of
the learning process since they learn by doing (experimenting). The proponent of these is John
B. Dewey. Essentialism relates to Realism, since essentialism emphasizes that core curriculum
may change because whatever is the important in the society, this philosophy will also adopt,
that’s why the core curriculum if this philosophy may change depending on what may change
in the society. The schooling here is practical, preparing students to become valuable members
in the society; this adopts whatever change that happens in the society. With that, it also
emphasizes the importance of knowledge of the subject matter and the mastery of the
teacher of the subject matter. I can say that this educational philosophy relates to realism in
the sense that the realism also emphasizes the importance of the content of the subject
matter and the mastery of the teacher of the subject matter. Essentialism also relates to
Pragmatism because both philosophies adopt the changes that happen in the society
especially those things that are important to humanity.
4. Explain the differences in focus of the educational philosophies and psychological
orientations. Are there also similarities?
There are some differences of focus of the educational philosophies and
psychological orientations. These educational philosophies have somewhat broader scope than
those of psychological orientations. The common focus of the educational philosophies is about
knowledge or what should we teach and how we come to know things around us. These have
also emphasis about the importance of the Curriculum content, the essence of the subject
matter, and the proficiency or the mastery of the teacher of the subject matter. These
educational philosophies are responsible for the character development of the students or
other individuals which is very important for the enhancement and development of the society.
There are really differences between their focus since the psychological orientations focus on
the learning or how the learning occurs. What should be done or what should be considered so
that learning will occur. They provide structures for the instructional aspects of teaching,
suggesting methods that are related to their perspective on learning as they are concern with
the nature of learning. Of course these psychological orientations have similarities to those
educational philosophies since they talk about how to educate a person, how to develop his
character and to impart learning to him. These are all about how to gain knowledge. These
psychological orientations are influenced with educational philosophies in terms of how to
educate a person and what are those necessary things to consider.
