5. Self Control – the research
1. Stories of success ALWAYS come with stories of regular
habits of practice (and 50% fail 50% of the time)
2. DeWall (2013) tells us that what is known to psychology
breaks down into three ideas about self-control:
• it takes effort and we have a limited amount of energy
• it’s a skill and can be learned
• it’s a knowledge resource, therefore implying practice
makes perfect
3. Three different strategies might be considered as a way
to develop self-control:
• the promotion focus – pursuing a positive outcome
• the prevention focus – vigilance against mistakes
• the practical focus – stacking habits

6. Habits– the research
1. NOT 21 days – when they tracked that back it is false data
2. Depends on the context and the complexity.
3. Which are your keystone habits (Duhigg, 2012)
4. Determine for yourself (know thyself again)….
1. What are the complexities in your life that work against
your doctoral work?
2. What are the allies?
3. Give yourself a rating for how hard this will be and then
plan accordingly.
