What is personality?
The word personality comes from the Latin word persona.
In the ancient world, a persona was a mask worn by an
actor. While some people tend to think of a mask as being
worn to conceal one’s identity, the theatrical mask was
originally used to either represent or project a specific
personality trait of a character.
Personality is concerned with the psychological pattern of
an individual the thoughts, emotions and feelings that are
unique to a person. It is believed that personality arises
from within the individual and remains fairly consistent
throughout life. Personality embraces moods, attitudes,
and opinions and is most clearly expressed in interactions
with other people. It includes behavioral characteristics,
both inherent and acquired, that distinguish one person
from another .
What is personality development?
Personality development is the gradual development of
personality in terms of characteristic emotional
responses, behaviors, a set of values and goals,
characteristic interpersonal relations and characteristic
traits. In simpler words, personality development means
sharpening our thoughts, emotion and behavior in such
a way to present a better image of ourselves. It is also
about building your capacities, nurturing your talent,
enhancing new skill sets, working on your weaknesses,
and transforming them into strengths.
Example: Problems are inevitable in a person’s life.
However the approach by which we face it depends on
our personality. Personality development teaches to be
optimistic as every problem has something to learn
from.
Importance of Personality development
1. Personality development enables us to discover our qualities: Every person has
their own set of strengths and weakness. Personality development is all about
improving your strength and minimizing your weakness. During which one can
discover their passion and area of expertise.
2. Gives Confidence: Confidence teaches that we might not control the situation
around us but we can control how we handle or perform in such situation.
Confidence in your personality gives you a boost that leads to a situation easy for
you and you are able to control all your anxiety and fears and perform
fearlessly. Also, your confidence enables you to have a hassle free conversation or if
you are going to give a speech it is very important for you to be confident to engage
your listeners.
3. More employment opportunities: A good personality helps to reach more
opportunities especially in professional sphere of a person’s life. It helps to vividly
express one’s idea and systematically approach a problem which is a key factor in
success.
4. Improves Communication Skills: A major part of our personality is the
ability to communicate. Half the world’s problems can be solved with good
communication! Expressing yourself and your thought using right words
can turn problems into opportunity. Verbal communication skills and written
communication skills are also a part of communication skills which are
improved.
5. Helps to develop Positive Attitude: Positive attitude is really important
for one to progress in life. A person with a positive attitude always looks at
the brighter side and is always on a developmental path. An individual with
a negative attitude finds a problem in every situation. Rather than cribbing
and criticizing people around, analyze the whole situation and try to find an
appropriate solution for the same. Developing a positive attitude even in a
hopeless situation is the part of personality developmental program.
6. Help achieve your goal: Goals of a person are based upon professional
or societal or personal sphere. Success in these sphere’s of life is directly
related to one’s personality and their actions.
1. Leave your comfort: Come out of your shell and challenge your
limits. Staying in the comfort zone will make one miss out on the
opportunity to try new things and discover ourselves. The next time if
you meet a group of people, try engaging with them more. Introduce
yourself to someone and have a conversation with them. Don’t stay in
the corner or play with your phone. Interact with people.
2. Be optimistic : Learn to look at every situation with positivity. Being
optimistic will help you identify opportunities and work towards them.
Optimistic people know how to see failures as setbacks. Even when
there are challenges and setbacks, optimistic people work on finding a
solution. So, next time when you fail in a task. Take it as a lesson and
start again with full enthusiasm.
Tips for personality development
3. Improve your body language: Many people think that communication is
simply about what is being said and heard. This is not true through body
language and expressions makes a huge impact on others. One’s body language
show’s ones confidence, trust and helps win people’s trust.
4. Be a patient listener: To be successful in anything one has to be a good
listener. Letting other complete their part and showing interest while they speak
helps build in trust. Listening also helps expands knowledge.
