SELF-CONFIDENCE can be learned, practiced and mastered just like any

don’t believed in yourself, who else will?
Here are some points to ponder:
1. STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVITY AND BRING THE POSITIVE IN
YOU—evaluate your inner self including your family and friends. Consider

you have the knowledge to back it up and your self-confidence will soar.
5. FOR TOUGH TIMES, WHEN ALL FAILS: MAKE A GREAT LIST—life is full
of challenges, when it’s difficult to put our self-confidence up, sit back and list
down all the things you are thankful for and another list of things you are proud
of accomplishing. Put it on your doors, walls, refrigerator and anywhere to remind
you when times get rough and tough.
CHELDY S. ELUMBA-PABLEO, MPA; LLB

The way you dress communicates the people around you. It tells
them the way you think, feel, how you respect your body and
even tells who you really are.
Your choice of clothing shows your attitude and thought
towards an event, person or activity.
Let’s start with..
1. PERSONAL GROOMING—clean and clear face with make-ups
on for women if it is necessary. Nails clean and polished. Dress
and shoes should fit in the event.
2. ELEGANT POSTURE—Good posture contributes to a poise.
Poise is equivalent to elegant bearing of a person. It is how you
carry yourself.

11. Better Public Speaking
Whether we are talking in a class, team meeting or presenting in an audience,
we have to talk in public from time to time. We can do this or do this badly.
The outcome affects ourselves and the impression from others. However,
this can be practiced to perform it well, enhance your skills, boost your self-
confidence and open up for more opportunities.
Here are some guidelines of public speaking:
1. PLAN APPROPRIATELY—plan your communication appropriately. Make sure
you have a good start with intriguing your audience and end up still holding
their attention.
For instance, start with an interesting static, headline, fact, storyline As a
strong opener.
Planning helps you think on your feet. But, there are time when you also need
an impromptu speech.
CHELDY S. ELUMBA-PABLEO, MPA; LLB
12. Better Public Speaking
2. PRACTICE—there’s good reason why we say “practice makes it perfect”.
You cannot be confident abd compelling speaker without practice. To get
practice, seek a chance to talk in public often. Tweak your words as you
practice so that it will come smoothly and easily.
3. ENGAGE YOUR AUDIENCE—when you speak, try to engage your
audience. This will feel you less isolated as a speaker and get everyone
involve in your message.
Avoid using words such as: “I think”, “just”, “actually” because it limits
your authority and conviction. Use direct, clear and authoritative words
instead.
4. PAY ATTENTION TO BODY LANGUAGE—your body language will give
your audience constant and subtle clues about your inner state. If you’re
nervous and do not believe in yourself the audience will soon know.
CHELDY S. ELUMBA-PABLEO, MPA; LLB
13. Better Public Speaking
5. THINK POSITIVE—thinking positive can make a difference to the
success of your communication Because it helps you feel more
confident. Fear makes easy to slip into a negative self-talks while
self-sabotaging thoughts as “I am not so into this”, “I can’t make this”
will lower your self-confidence and increase the chance you won’t
achieve what you are truly capable of.
Use affirmation and visualization of your communication to raise
your confidence.
6. COPE WITH NERVES—when speaking of a crowd, you envision
terrible things to happen. Reason why you have short and shallow
breath, excessive sweating, fast heartbeat because you’re afraid of
failure. Kick off that adrenalin from your blood stream.
CHELDY S. ELUMBA-PABLEO, MPA; LLB
14. Better Public Speaking
“Fight or flight“ is what you have. If you feel butterflies in your stomach,
pause and have a deep breathing exercise. Take a deep breath from your
tummy, hold it for a few seconds and release it slowly. This will help your
breath normally.
Think of what you want to tell your audience and forget about yourself.
This is more important than your fear.
7. WATCH RECORDING OF YOUR SPEECHES—whenever possible record
your speeches and watch your flaws and strong points and learn to improve it.
Pay attention to your gestures, do they come naturally or by force. Look how
you handle interruptions like sneeze or question that you are not prepared and
improve it.
The more you push yourself to speak in front of others, the better you will
become and the more you boost your self-confidence.
CHELDY S. ELUMBA-PABLEO, MPA; LLB
