2.  Pernicious anemia is defined as
a type of vitamin B12 deficiency
that results from impaired
uptake of vitamin B12 due to the
lack of a substance known as
intrinsic factor (IF) produced by
the stomach lining.
 Pernicious anemia is a
condition caused by too little
vitamin B12 in the body. It is
one form of vitamin B12
deficiency anemia.

3.  Vitamin B12 is a water
soluble vitamin that
keeps nerves and RBC
healthy.
 It is animal foods
including meat, fish,
eggs, milk and other
dairy products.
 It is also known as
cobalamine.

4. Common signs and
symptoms of vitamin B12
deficiency, seen in pernicious
anemia are:-
Feeling tired and weak
Tingling and numbness in
hands and feet
A bright red, smooth tongue
In severe condition:-
Chest pain
Heart attack
Angina
Signs and symptoms

5. Causes of pernicious anemia
 Intrinsic factor is a
glycoprotein made in stomach
that is necessary for absorption
of vitamin B12.
 When stomach doses not make
enough intrinsic factor,
intestine can not properly
absorb vitamin B12.
 Parietal cell within the gastric
mucosa are destroyed.
 It also raises risk for
developing stomach cancer.

6. Diagnosis of pernicious anemia
Can be diagnosed by:-
 Complete blood count (CBC)
 Measurement of vitamin B12 level
 Test for the presence auto antibodies to intrinsic factor
 Blood levels of iron and iron binding capacity
 Blood levels of methylmalonic acid or homocysteine
 Schilling test
 Bone marrow biopsy

7. Treatment of pernicious anemia
Can be treated by:-
 Intramuscular injection
 Oral dose of vitamin B12
 Nasal spray
 Sublingual suplements
