5. Causes of pernicious anemia
Intrinsic factor is a
glycoprotein made in stomach
that is necessary for absorption
of vitamin B12.
When stomach doses not make
enough intrinsic factor,
intestine can not properly
absorb vitamin B12.
Parietal cell within the gastric
mucosa are destroyed.
It also raises risk for
developing stomach cancer.
6. Diagnosis of pernicious anemia
Can be diagnosed by:-
Complete blood count (CBC)
Measurement of vitamin B12 level
Test for the presence auto antibodies to intrinsic factor
Blood levels of iron and iron binding capacity
Blood levels of methylmalonic acid or homocysteine
Schilling test
Bone marrow biopsy
7. Treatment of pernicious anemia
Can be treated by:-
Intramuscular injection
Oral dose of vitamin B12
Nasal spray
Sublingual suplements
