Caused due to severe deficiency of
Thiamin.
PECULARITY:
Seen most commonly in alcoholics
compared to the general population; the
chronic heavy alcohol consumption
interferes with the intestinal absorption if
thiamin.

the gene for transketolase that results in
reduced affinity of transketolase for
TPP.

suffering from thiamin deficiency.
The breast milk of these mothers is deficient in
thiamin.
SYMPTOMS:
1. Cardiac dilation(enlargement of heart)
2. Tachycardia
3. Convulsions
4. Edema
5. Vomiting
6. Abdominal colic
7. In acute condition, infant may die due to cardiac
failure.
