high school and college when students take a break from formal education to

objects differently than before.
The importance of metaphors lies in their ability to shape our perception. This is
especially true when dealing with conceptual metaphors, that allow us to understand a
concept in terms of a different one (Lakoff Johnson, 1980). As Culler puts it
Metaphor is thus a version of a basic way of knowing: we know something by
seeing it as something. Theorists speak of metaphors we live by , basic
metaphorical schemes, like life is a journey . Such schemes structure our ways of

unique insight into the gradual deterioration of the human mind and spirit. On
examining Antoinette and her mother Annette, the reader gains a new perspective of
insanity. One realizes that these two women are mentally perturbed as a result of
numerous external factors that are beyond their control. The cruelty of life and
people drive Annette and her daughter to lunacy. Neither mother nor daughter have a
genetic predisposition to madness, and their downfall is an inevitable result of the
actions of those around them and the unbearable nature of their living situation.

trait, is responsible for their dementia. Antoinette suffers another form of solitude
because she grows up as an orphan. Her father died when she was very young, and

younger brother, Pierre. Antoinette recalls trying to show her some affection, but
also states, ?she pushed me away, not roughly, but calmly, coldly, without a word,
as if she had decided once and for all that I was useless to her.? Thus the reader
recognizes that from a young age, Antoinette yearns for love and must live with the
pain of being rejected by her own mother. This solitude can again be shown as one
of many reasons why Antoinette is mentally unstable. Financial decline also serves
to drive Annette into madness. Annette started out as an affluent socialite and is
now a destitute widow. She is unable to adapt to this new, unfamiliar position in
society and longs for her privileged lifestyle. This becomes evident when Antoinette
recalls how her mother ?still planned and hoped perhaps she had to hope every time
she passed a looking glass.? Annette tries to recapture her former _prestige by riding
her horse every morning, even after ?her riding clothes grew shabby?. Her horse and
her riding clothes are status symbols that represented the wealth her family once had.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Denver City Council, today I would like to talk to
you about the city of Denver enforcing a dangerous dog law instead of breed
specific legislation, because the enforcement of breed specific legislation is not the
solution to dangerous dogs in the community. I plan on showing how Denver could
change their law to make a difference to the quality of dogs living in this great city.
We have laws and ordinances in place to protect our animals from being treated
cruelly by people, they keep owners from starving their animals, beating them, or just
mistreating them, but then those same laws tell us that your city is allowed to

better? Singling out these specific breeds of dogs does not prevent the wrong
people from owning them regardless of the law. If you look at both of the shelters in
Denver, the Denver Dumb Friends League and the Denver Municipal Animal
Shelter, there are still Pit Bulls being picked up as strays running the streets, and Pit
Bulls being removed from their homes because their owners would not comply with
the statute, obviously something is not working! There are rules about gun control
and who can own them and who cannot, but that does not prevent lawbreakers from
having a gun, why would we believe that telling these same people they cannot own a
dangerous breed of dog is really not going prevent them from owning one. When
you tell someone they are not allowed to have a beloved member of their family
they end up breaking the laws and hiding their dog, this causes their dog to become
unsocial and yes even possibly aggressive. The government has rules in place so
that responsible gun owners can register and comply with the rules placed for their
protection, why are dog owners not given the same rights as other citizens of
Denver? Breed Specific Legislation is unfair and unjust to all dog lovers

state department official by the name of Nicholas Trist to Mexico City to negotiate
with Mexican officials in hopes of forming a peace treaty. Unfortunately for Trist,
at the time, the Mexican government refused to negotiate with Trist or anyone else
from the American government. However, by the later part of the year, after U.S.
forces led by General Winfield Scott had battled their way through Mexico from
Veracruz to Mexico City, Mexican officials realized that they had no choice but to
negotiate with Trist. Even though President Polk ordered him to return to
Washington, D.C., Trist stayed in Mexico City to negotiate with Mexican
officials. Finally, on February 2, 1848, Nicholas Trist along with other Mexican
officials signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Treaty stated that Mexico
would cede about 525,000 square miles of land in its northern territories, including
New Mexico, to the United States, and that it would recognize the Rio Grande
River as the United States southern border. In the Mexican cession, residents in
