With the recent shooting at the Umpqua Community College in Oregon, security on
college campuses has become a major topic. Some campuses have increased their
security while others have kept theirs the same. One of these campuses that has kept
its security at the status quo is Ohio State University. This amount of security is what
Wright State lacks. It is understandable that the size of the campus of Wright State is
nowhere near that of Ohio State and that Wright State is near the Wright Patterson
Air Force Base, but having only a couple campus police cruisers roaming around
campus is not enough to prevent a shooting so there needs to be a greater police
presence on campus.

The proposition that I have in mind for this is that Wright State needs to have at
least fifteen officers on duty during campus hours. I know that this will not be
perfect in preventing a shooting or an attack on campus so I am also proposing
that there needs to be a rapid response unit that specializes in active shooter
scenarios that is able to get to campus within twenty minutes as well as a keycard
system that only allows people into certain buildings with authorized cards, in this
case student IDs and visitor passes. First, a greater police presence will serve as a
deterrent for people to avoid attacking the campus. Second, having a keycard system
that works only with student IDs and visitor passes can act as a deterrent just by
making it more difficult for a person to get into a building. Lastly, having a rapid
response team will reduce the time that a gunman has to perform their criminal act

equation from the standard curve in order to find the concentrations of proteins and

Human action and reaction are heavily based on what we experience and how we
interoperate those experiences. The Knife Thrower is a short story written by Steven
Millhauser that focuses on three major concepts of human action and reaction. The
story follows an audience of people as they watch an anticipating show of a knife
thrower and his dangerous tricks. In the story, The Knife Thrower, Millhauser focuses
on three major concepts of humanaction; how humansact amongst a group of people,
how humans act when trust is built between two individuals, and how humans act
when they witness pain and death in regards to the human body. The first concept
that is focused on within this short storyis the way humans act when they are
amongst a group of people. When amongst a group of people, Millhauser s work
shows that humans are quick to follow each other and they create a herd mentality.
An important literary concept Millhauser uses to his advantage to express this is
the use of first person narration. Millhauser uses words such as we and us to group
together not only the audience s feelings and thoughts but also the readers. This is
done so strategically to present this first concept of how people herd together in
groups during times of hesitation. The first way this is shown is when the audience

Carole Pateman s work on Democratizing Citizenship: Some Advantages of a Basic
Income argues for a universal basic income (UBI) to all citizens. Pateman argues
why it would help with democratization in regards to the institutions of marriage,
employment, and citizenship, and why people should support it. Although
Pateman does provide clear reasons as to why a UBI would help benefit our
society, she does not acknowledge how it would happen and does little to address
the feasibility of such a large societal and systemic overhaul. Pateman fails to focus
on the key aspects of a UBI such as payment, economic repercussions and women s

She claims to advocate women s rights throughout areas of her writing but then
makes claims that women can choose to stay at home if they have a UBI. This
statement is incredibly contradictory to the idea of women s rights as a woman can
also choose to work if she desires, which is something Pateman does not address. As
discussed above, if a UBI were to be put in place, there are a number of people who
would choose not to work, or to work less in favour of pursuing more scholarly or
creative outlets, but those numbers of people staying home seem like they would
be higher for women. Studies have shown that the reduction in hours worked is
very small for men, but larger for women (Hum/Simpson S280). This notion could
be attributed to the idea of stigmatization against women; the idea that women are
supposed to stay home and take care of the house and the children. This notion
could come back into play if the wife is now earning a UBI and is therefore
presented with the option of taking care of the house without having to work a day

Today, Supreme Court Nominee s, Neil Gorsuch, Confirmation hearing came near
conclusion on a very confrontational note with the Senate s Principal Democrat
threatening to filibuster. This would complicate the way the senate conducts its
business . The Republicans eager to confirm Gorsuch only have a 52 majority
instead of the 60 majority that is necessary. However, they say he will be confirmed
anyway, even if it means removing the filibuster option and allowing nominees to be

s decision to filibuster was not unexpected but it will increase tension in the senate. If
this nominee cannot earn 60 votes a bar met by each of President Obama s nominees,

He broke a lot of the rules involved in a filibuster. However, the intention is still
there. One thing that I was confused about is how this filibuster could prevent Judge
Gorsuch from being confirmed. In fact, I was confused how any filibuster gets
anything done. I thought the entire point of a filibuster was to tire out your
opponents until the bend to your will. I now understand that filibustering increases
the number of votes need to pace a law. I also know that the Republicans are
considering exercising the Nuclear Option which would bypass the filibuster letting

Racism, the idea of one s race being superior than others is not an idea we are born
with. It is an idea that is taught by the ones closest to us or simply adapted to due
to our very own surroundings. In the play, Master Harold and the boys, by Athol
Fugard, the underlying message of discrimination and ignorance is incredibly
evident. The play takes place in South Africa in the 1950s during apartheid. It was
a time of racial inequality and segregation. The play is a miniature representation
of the circumstances happening in South Africa a parallel time. The very same
circumstances that surround young Hally, a white boy, are the very same that
compete with his future. Sam, a black servant, has always been present in Hally s
life. Although many obstacles have tried to corrupt Hally, Sam has always been
there to show him a different side. Hally is optimistic about change but
unknowingly seems to block it. Throughout the play Master Harold and the boys,
Fugard transforms objects such as a kite and a bench into symbols that project a
hidden meaning behind them. For example, the kite in the story takes Hally back to
his childhood. As a child, Hally had a root sense of defeat, dissatisfaction, and shame
growing up alongside a drunk racist father. Although, much of what Hally remembers
isn t pleasant, there was a moment that stuck with him; flying a kite. It was made up
of scraps and trash that Sam made for him, he was shocked that a black man could

introductory science classes, as a simple variation of diffusion. Because osmosis is
the first of many natural phenomena understood by students, it is important that it is
understood correctly. This however, is not the case. In fact, discrepancies exist

Effects on Academic Achievement
Matt Leland (2005) emphasizes the benefits of mindfulness on academic
achievement, Mindfulness is helpful in the moment of learning and also in more
future focused skills. By maintaining a calmer view of the present, students are able
to improve their study habits, planning, and organizational skills (p. 20). During my
elementary years, I wish I would have been taught more of these skills to help with
the academic struggles I experienced. When I was younger, I remember feeling
performance anxiety before I had to take an exam in science. Although I enjoyed
science class and studied, I felt overwhelmed, nervous, and my mind was going in a
million different directs. I also notice in my field experience that many of my
students tense up or sigh when they are told they are about to take an exam. There is
an uneasiness that affected students in the classroom and added pressure.
The research I gathered supported the positive effects mindfulness has on a student s
concentration, memory, and critical thinking skills. As a teacher, I would utilize this
method before an exam by modeling to my students how to focus on their breath
while moving and stretching their body. I would have students close their eyes and
say positive words of affirmation about themselves in the present moment. Here,
mindfulness and movement allow students to feel a sense of calmness, stimulate
body and brain connections, and provide them with tools to take a positive approach
