Similarities And Differences Between Carpet Weavers And...
Through the poems, Carpet Weavers and Mid Term Break, poets Carol Rumens and Seamus Heaney
communicate a loss of innocence, offering different interpretations on similar themes. Both poems
portray the plight of children experiencing a harsh reality which undermines social conventions which
shelter children and forces upon them heavy responsibility. In Carpet Weavers the children ascend to
maturity, being deprived of a childhood due to their responsibility to earn money labouring in
impoverished conditions. Whereas, Mid Term Break traverses the roles of death and bereavement
rather than poverty and hardship. Seamus Heaney recounts the death of his younger brother, revealing
the nature of children and how they cope with loss.

How Motivation and Leadership Theories Can Be Applied.
MOTIVATION THEORIES: Goal Setting Theory: In the late 1960s, Edwin Locke proposed that
intentions to work toward a goad are a major source of work motivation. That is, goals tel an
employee what needs to be done and how much effort will need to be made. Specific hard goals
produce a higher level of output than does the generalized goal of do your best . Why? The specificity
of the goal itself seems to act as an internal stimulus. For instance, when a trucker commits to making
12 round trips between Toronto and Buffalo, New York, each week, this intention gives him a specific
objective to try to attain. The conclusion is that intentions as articulated in terms of hard and specific
goals are the motivating force. Under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quality Circle: A work group of employees who meet regularly to discuss their quality problems,

expansion of jobs, increasing the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution and
evaluation of his her work. Job Enlargement: Increasing the number and varite of tasks that an
individual performs results in jobs with more diversity. Job rotation: The periodic shifting of an
employee from one task to another. Theory Y programs: Strictly designed jobs: The jobs designed
strictly, the rules of which have to be followed by the workers. Fringe Benefits: Benefits offered to the
workers for good performance. For e.g. Laptop, free fuel, access to internet etc. Piece rate system: The
system in which employees are paid extra on every extra unit produced. Two Factor theory: Intrinsic
factors(Motivators) are related to job satisfaction, while extrinsic factors(Hygiene factors) are
associated with dissatisfaction. The two factor theory was proposed by psychologist Frederick
Herzberg. According to him, the factors leading to job satisfaction are separate and distinct from those
that lead to job disssatisfaction. Therefore, managers who seek to eliminate factors that can create job
dissatisfaction may bring about peace but not necessarily

The Importance Of The Heroic Tale Of Sundiata
Throughout history, storytellers have used fantastic fables to entertain his or her audience. Filled with
larger than life characters and amazing tales of heroism, on the surface these fables simply seem like
mass entertainment much in the same way comic book heroes entertain us today on the silver screen.
However, most of the time these epic, fantastic tales have a much deeper purpose for both the
storyteller and the audience. While the stories aim to entertain, more importantly, the epic tales exist to
hand down crucial histories from generation to generation. This is important to the culture in which
the story takes place, and is a true observation for the story of Sundiata, the founding of the Mali
Empire, and the descendants of these Mali people. While on the surface, the story is a heroic tale of
Sundiata s early life as he overcomes many obstacles, defeats mystical and magical foes, and finally
emerges triumphant, it is really a tale designed to teach the audience the history of the Mali Empire
and the values and culture of the Mali people. This is tremendously important to the Mali people back
when the story was first told and is still important to them today.
As a historical oral epic, the tale of Sundiata tells the reader the story of the creation of the Mali
Empire. The events of the tale take place during the early 13th century and detail the early, difficult
life of Sundiata up until his final victory over the evil Soros. After this victory, Sundiata

Describe Michael s Identity In This Is It
1. Aesthetics. How do Michael s wardrobe, dance, vocal, poetic, and performative choices all point to
a particular style? What would you, as a critic, call this style, and why? As a critic, I would call
Michael s style transgressive. Michael tacitly challenged gendered, sartorial mores and wore women s
couture like Givenchy and Balmain, adding androgynous touches like his trademark ornamented glove
and cropped pants. His dance skills were similarly daring from his pioneer pop lock style to his
signature, risqué crotch grab. His performative choices blended this corporeal innovation with digital
spectacle and married with them with a mélange of sound, which distilled elements of pop, funk and
soul. Perhaps most transgressive were his vocal choices, however; a high tenor, Michael had a three
and a half octave range, according to vocal coach Seth Riggs, and he managed to connect this range in
a fluid, unprecedented way. 2. Identity. How would you describe this identity, and ... Show more

His perfectionism is displayed in the film multiple times: (1) When he corrects the band s bass level
and timing during the sound check for The Way You Make Me Feel ; (2) when he insists that the light

cue that conflicts with the director s initial cue for Smooth Criminal ; and (4) when he corrects the
timing on the appearance of the bulldozer during the Earth Song rehearsal. With respect to his
humanitarian side, Michael demonstrates patience and benevolence toward his entourage and
evidences a similar goodwill in his socially conscious songwriting namely the Earth Song, which
encourages environmental accountability and community involvement. Michael s scandal ridden

Call Of The Wild Analysis
The novel, call of the wild was about a dog named buck. Getting kidnaped and sold for money, to feed
a gambler addiction, he gets put on multiple sled teams and faces rough challenges. Not being used to
the cold, he struggles to survive the harsh new environment, dealing with low food and melting ice at
times on the Yukon trail. The 2 articles that relate to the novel, talk about those harsh climates, and the
diet for the dogs that is needed to keep them going on the trail. The events in the first article relate to
the novel because it talks about how the sled dogs and driver had to face warmer climate changes. Just
like Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, when they were running on thin ice, and it was spring time when
they went out. One event that happened in the article, was when a man was woken by the sound of ice
cracking under him, the ice was melting. I was sleeping in my sled bag and I heard a roar, sounded
like a freight train. So I threw all my stuff in the sled bag, pulled my dogs and my sled up the bank a
bit and turned around, and there was wide open water where the sled was sitting five minutes earlier
(Paragraph 4). The article is also related to the novel because the food worries and problems. Even

low on meat from the event of the wolf attack in there camp, the dogs got skinnier, their coats became
thin and didn t keep them warm, and they lost energy from the lack of meat, and they weren t able to
run the trails very well. Dogs need to be feed twice a day, and the sled dogs in the novel couldn t be,

How the Introduction of the Individual into a Non traditional Sport for His or Her Gender Affects that
Individual and the Sport Itself A high school age boy makes the papers when he joins the girls varsity
field hockey team at his high school. A woman is judged according to femininity rather than muscle
mass in a body building competition. An African American is thought inferior to his white
counterparts on the sports field. A woman is discouraged from playing contact sports under the pretext
of being too delicate. All of these events have one thing in common: they, in their own context,
involve individuals entering a non traditional sport for their gender or race. Over the years, events
such as these continually arise causing either ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After all, I myself would have been surprised if a boy showed up on the field one day wearing a skirt
like the rest of the team and expecting to play in the game. Part of the problem is that it is so
uncommon. People are afraid of things that they ve never seen or done. Non traditional athletes in
certain sports are partially unaccepted due to the fact that they are a first. This is part of the reason
why Bev (from Pumping Iron II), was so unaccepted by the judges of the women s bodybuilding
contest: the judges were disgusted by her muscularity. Images of muscular women... are disconcerting,
even threatening... [she was a] threat to established values. (Holmlund 302) There is a first for
everything, but firsts are always hard to accept and integrate into society. There was, for instance, a
single female member of the wrestling team at my high school. It was something that we d all heard of
happening at other high schools, but was never something that we d anticipated coming to our high
school. She was seen as being strange: butch, unlady like, even ugly. I never gave her more than a
thought because I felt the same. In this context however, of non traditional athletes in sports, I see how
hard she must have worked to overcome the obstacle of being the social outcast due to her perceived
peculiarity. Wrestling must have been something that she loved to do. If I can respect women like
Martina Navratilova or Tony Stone for being pioneer women in

Comparing Douglas Adams Difficulty With My Life-Style
1. Douglas Adams uses cause and effect to make a persuasive agrument about the relative impact of
the an action by explaining cause and effect is a never ending cycle. Adam s text is shows how people
actions can effect people/things and aren t consciously aware of how this effect people every day life.
There is nothing that can be done to prevent the effects of the actions that are being taken it is just a
part of life. Arthur said, I seem to be having a tremendous difficulty with my life style by Arthur
saying caused a tremendous war that could of been prevented for happening. However that was not the
case, the opponents believe there was only one cause that caused Arthur to feel that certain way about

A rhetorial similarity between The Penultimate Peril and The Hitchiker s Guide is both texts argue that
cause and effect have a cycle that keeps going and certain things led to something and than back
again. Peoples actions determine the different outcomes that a person decides to do. Than the
outcomes have other outcomes and that continues to go in a circle. A difference between the two texts
is Adams thinks each individual cause has a specific outcome while Snickets thinks an action can have
many outcomes. In The Hitchiker s Guide the reader can see there is only one cause to why everything
happen he is more specific in his story. In The Penultimate Peril Snickets the reader can see the
mysteries could have been solved in many ways. Snikets follow the basic rule of cause and effect
which shows any effect can have multiple possible causes; the task of cause and effect is to determine
the correct one. Snicket made a metaphor to that when he said, the world is like a calm pond, and that
anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the pond, spreading
circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by one tiny action.
One action can have many possibles to be

Essay on How Asian Americans are Portrayed in Hollywood...
Asian American actors and actresses are portrayed in Hollywood movies as always being the silent
and yielding foreign victims to social injustice and prejudice. Whether or not these depictions are true,
they are nonetheless stereotypes that Hollywood producers have come up with. According to the US
Census in the year 2000, Asian Americans make up 4.2% of the entire American population, and
knowing that most Asian Americans live on the west and east coast of the United States, many
Americans living in central parts of this country have not really been exposed to any Asian Americans.
Because of this fact, it is highly probable that most Americans get their exposure to the Asian

His men get defeated by other white gangs which clearly shows that Hollywood wants you to think
that Asians are inferior to white people. In Richard Fung s analysis on Sally s Beauty Spot, The fact
that Sally never kisses an Asian unfortunately reflects the absence of Asian men from Western sexual
representation (Fung 169). Asian actors rarely get to be involved in on screen romantic relationships
with their co star Asian actresses because Hollywood does not believe Asian men are capable of being
sexual. They would rather have them doing fighting scenes or even playing nerdy roles than to allow
them to do romantic scenes. Similarly, in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, only Bond is
involved in a relationship with the Asian female character played by Michelle Yeoh. And majority of
the time in most films, Asian actors and actresses are instructed to speak with an Asian accident and in
broken English. Likewise for Asian actresses, they have been pictured as exotic, highly sexual, overly
feminine, and eager to please women capable of easily falling in love with white men. But what
Hollywood really fails to portray about Asian women in Asia is that they are prostitutes trying to make
a living to put food on the table for their families. People do not realize that these Asian women come
from poverty and did not receive the same education as American women. These Asian women are not
choosing to have sex with white males, but because their clients have

Symbols In A Rose For Emily
The literary works in the short story ¨A Rose For Emily¨ by American Author William Faulkner is an
influential work because of the symbols, motifs, and theme that are expressed throughout the story,
which are based upon love and relationships. Faulkner portrays the story in third person limited which
allows us to know the thoughts and feelings of a single charcter. The narrator is never identified
throughout the story, but when we examine the tone we can understand there is this we person, who
changes his/her mind about Miss Emily at certain points in the narration. A symbol is something used
for or regarded as representing something else. One instance of symbolism in this short story is in the
title itself. The rose is a symbol of love in which case Homer is the rose or love for Emily. Emily s
father wanted the best for her, so he thought that no one was good enough. When her father passed
away she met Homer and fell head over heels in love with him. ... Show more content on

One motif that we see throughout the story is intense gazing of Emily by the narrator and the

him. Then we said, She will persuade him yet, because Homer himself had remarked he liked men,
and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks Club that he was not a marrying
man. Later we said, Poor Emily behind the jalousies as they passed on Sunday afternoon in the
glittering buggy, Miss Emily with her head high and Homer Barron with his hat cocked and a cigar in
his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove. (Rose) The townspeople always watched Emily because
she was such a mystery. They saw that Emily loved Homer but it didn t seem like the feelings were
mutual. It seems as if the people wanted to step in on their relationship, but Miss Emily wasn t going

Romantic Impact On Napoleon
Napoleon Bonaparte and the wars he fought against Great Britain, the conveniently named Napoleonic
Wars had a lasting and profound impact on British citizens and society. Napoleon for a brief period
had transformed a nation of anarchy and instability into the most powerful empire in Europe and
posed a serious threat to Britain s perceived dominance and invulnerability. The fear of a Napoleonic
invasion spread across Britain, an event that had it been realised may have been welcomed by many
within the nation. The French general turned emperor was unquestionably the British governments
most imposing enemy but there were many individual Britons who held Napoleon in much higher
esteem than their own monarch/Regent. The British nation was divided ... Show more content on

He notes that the Lake poets originally revered Napoleon but as the wars continued they became
increasingly conservative and critical of him. He recalls that William Wordsworth s primary reason for
his disillusionment with Napoleon was his 1804 coronation, other Romantics such as Samuel Taylor
Coleridge however, were not so clear about their reasons for resenting Napoleon and Stock states that
this inability to decide upon a definitive opinion characterizes the Romantic understanding of
Bonaparte because the transition from reverence to hatred was so extreme and unexpected. Like
radicals and loyalists, the Romantics also offered different interpretations of Napoleon in their works
especially on the concept of his humanity . Coleridge, Walter Scott and Robert Southey believed
Napoleon to be an innovative politician and therefore, very human, while Percy Bysshe Shelley too
regarded Napoleon as human but believed his political genius was a fallacy as he merely reverted
France back to monarchy; whereas Lord Byron considered Napoleon to be a metaphysical being.
Stock states that the Romantics also make quite extensive use of Satan when interpreting Napoleon
and Coleridge and Scott classify him as evil incarnate to the point where they desire his death. Stock
argues that some Roamntics such as William Hazlitt used the Satanic image of Napoleon to personify
him as a revolutionary figure inverting political norms. Despite previously denigrating him as a mere
politician, Coleridge too personifies Napoleon as a presence rather than a human being and Stock
states Hazlitt celebrates Napoleon as an Idea not an

Argumentative Essay On Declining Fish
Over fishing our waters is causing a great deal of concern amongst environmentalist and commercial
fishermen. According to the Declining Fish Stock video, the average commercial fishermen s catch is
about 20,000 pounds. This has been estimated to equal a couple hundred fish per day per vessel
(Declining Fish, 2007). Some studies indicate that commercial fishing fleets have stripped the ocean
waters of at least 90 percent of its big fish (Declining Fish, 2007). This has begun to cause heavy
competition between commercial fishermen who are left competing for the other 10 percent of the
remaining fish population (Declining Fish, 2007).
Studies indicate that our oceans are not as resilient as we had once believed (Declining Fish, 2007).
According to Dr. Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, we will never again be
able to fish our waters at the level that we have been over the last half century (Declining Fish, 2007).
Dr. Jackson also states that over fishing is more destructive to the ocean waters than toxic pollution or
degrading water quality (Declining Fish, 2007). This is a frightening thought and seems to have
environmentalists and commercial fishermen at each other s throats.
When asked if the damage to the fish population is at a level of completion, Dr. Jackson said that the
damage was near completion but that the damage could be reversed if we take much needed drastic
measures to ensure that these fish have a chance to repopulate (Declining Fish,

The Other in William Shakespeare s Othello
In several of Shakespeare s plays the writer introduces the notion of being considered an other , and
whether certain groups are in or out . This theme is significantly portrayed in the play Othello, in
which a black general living in Venice must constantly struggle to balance his dual nature of both
Moor and Venetian. It is apparent that before the play begins, Othello has not yet resolved his
duplicitous self image; however, throughout the action of the play, he is put in a maliciously designed
situation which causes his insecurities and self doubt to breed, allowing the Venetian?s stereotype of
the brutal and ignorant black man to consume Othello s eloquence and education adopted ... Show

(I.ii.70) of Othello, and Iago plays the part of honest and loyal friend, but secretly despises Othello
and crafts an intricate and devious plot for his ruin. The various opinions of Othello in the beginning
of the play show that despite the fact that he can hold a position of power in Venetian society, it is
nearly impossible for him to obtain universal respect from the people who will never accept his exotic
appearance and heritage.
It would be difficult for anyone to come to terms with such contradictory notions of themselves, and
Othello is no exception. Once Iago sets the stage for Othello?s fall, the negative emotions aroused in
the general cause him to release the lunatic black man that the insiders have feared lies within ?The
Moor?s? austere composure. Many critics have suggested that Othello?s extreme jealousy is what
amounts to his belief in Iago?s twisted tale of Desdemona?s infidelity and thus his ultimate downfall;
however, it seems more likely that it is Othello?s insecurity over his sense of self that allows this
manipulation to amount to such an extreme representation of character. Othello himself admits ?Rude

with Desdemona, although his words prove him to possess quite an impressive mastery of the English

Huckleberry Finn Book Analysis
Overtime the n word became a word only Black people are allowed to say. When teaching the book as
is brings up the problem where people do not feel comfortable reading the word over and over because
they know it is not from a black person, it is Huck saying it or another white person. This however is
teachable moment were the students have a opportunity to talk about the racial history, the teachers
should be able to guide the conversation better (Beck). When correctly guided the students better
know our history and we learn from it so in the future we make better decisions. Because the students
are the future decision makers and are therefore suppose to be openmind of the outcomes. Dr. Nel
agrees that the discomfort created by this book needs a sensitive teacher to guide this experience
(Beck). If there is discomfort then society clearly has not progressed. As Nel said in his interview that
only way to teach Huckleberry Finn the right way is to be uncomfortable and discuss the situation
rather than ignoring it and pretending everything is okay (Beck). In order for the students to acquire
the most knowledge is by receiving the original version of Huckleberry Finn . Schools however have
avoided the dilemma that comes from reading Huckleberry Finn due to its overuse of the n word.
Therefore, one solution has come up to replace the n word with another, because that is the only
problem with the book. The NewSouth Books has partnered up with Alan Gribben to

Communication and Professional Relationships with Children...
Unit Title: Communication and professional relationships with children young people and adults
OCR Unit 1
1) 1.1 Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young
people and adults in all walks of life and at any age whether it be with relatives, friends, neighbours,
colleagues, associates or even total strangers. Also, effective language skills are essential for children
to access the curriculum. In the classroom, spoken language is the main way that teachers teach and
children learn. Therefore if the skill of communicating in an effective manner isn t learned or grasped
at an early age then it could lead to various complications in terms of interacting with other people, be
it in the home or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Say for instance that a child is born in the U.K to parents of a different nationality or is brought up in a
multicultural and diverse community where the use of the English language is influenced by many
different nationalities then communication in a school setting would have to be adapted further to
accommodate these variables.
2.3 The main differences between communicating with adults and communicating with young people
are complexity. When most adults share dialogue they can usually converse without being conscious
about using synonyms and simple sentences to be understood whereas with young people
communicating with simplicity becomes important if it s going to be effective. Vocabulary is another
difference to consider because adults tend to subconsciously communicate at the limits of their
linguistic knowledge but with young people and children, vocabulary needs to be tailored to meet
them at their level. Adults can generally communicate effectively with each other with little or no
detail through the use of body language and non verbal gestures, however for a young person who is
still developing their communication skills this mode of interaction may not be the most appropriate
depending on the circumstance and setting.
2.4 The need to adapt communication to meet different communication needs of adults depends on
factors such as age, culture, nationality, ethnicity and disability. For

Literary Criticism In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas
Literary Criticism In the short stories The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin and
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, the authors use literary criticism so the reader can dissect the
many different literary elements such as symbolism and vivid ironic imagery that help explain the
parallel theme going on in both stories. To achieve a world with peace throughout and reach a state of
utopia some moral and ethical decay will take place. Both stories have social issues that test the
citizens moral and ethical beliefs throughout the story, and actually show how the society is decaying
because of what they are doing. The short story by Ursula Le Guin, is about a flawless utopian society
that puts all of its guilt onto the misery of a child who is locked away in a cellar broom closet in order
to keep the society in picture perfect condition. (Attebery). One of the literary devices she uses
throughout the story is symbolism. Le Guin makes this child carry the burden of the society Omelas
symbolic to Jesus because in the Bible, Jesus dies on the cross and takes all of the sins away from the
believers. This symbolism shows a moral decay within the society because the burden is no longer
casted and saved by written beliefs who promise to take these troubles and cast them away. It is being
given to a child who in return can give nothing back. This child didn t deserve this punishment and Le
Guin tells the reader that some people know about the child, but instead of trying to help they just
ignore the pain this child endures for them while they live their perfect life. Just like in the Bible,
Jesus did so much for his people and his disciples, but when he was on the cross no one came to help
him, and his people that he endured so much for just watched him die on the cross. This kid will live
the same life that Jesus did toward the end. Everyone will turn and not come to his rescue and the
child dies alone in suffering with the burdens of the world.
In addition to using symbolism, Le Guin writes using vivid imagery to describe the theme of the story.
She gives the reader an image of the room the child lives. It has one locked door, and no window. A
little light seeps in dustily between cracks in the

Yellow Woman And A Beauty Of The Spirit Summary
Silko uses a unique structure in her essay Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit to help her get her
points across to the reader. She uses the effectiveness of the structure to make her points clear,
convincing, but also engaging. She begins the essay by talking about how she is different. She
explains the past of her Great Grandfather to help explain why she is different. She continues to talk
about other family members throughout the essay that influenced her. These examples help make her
points clear and convincing. The structure is effective because of the evidence provided in her stories
that show how she overcame the feeling that she is different. Silko begins her essay saying how she
was different from her playmates as a child. From the time I was a small child, I was aware that I was
different. I looked different from my playmates. My two sisters looked different too. After she stated
this, she talks about why she was different from the other Laguna Pueblo people growing up by
explaining her great grandfather s past. Both brothers married full blood Laguna Pueblo women. ...

Ethernet cables are generally used to connect devices on LANs including routers and switches.
Theoritically, ethernet cables can support 100 Mbs or 1000 Mbps maximum bandwidith. This
maximum can not be achieved due to overhead hardware and computer operating system. Ethernet
cables usually support one or more industry standards including Category 5 (CAT 5) and Category 6
(CAT 6).
In this network, CAT 5 ethernet cables are used. CAT 5 ethernet cables are a fifth generation twisted
pair cables and popular of all twisted pairs cables available today because they are both affordable and
support high speeds.
The LAN on the ground floor needs to connect to the internet. For a computer to connect to another
computer on the internet it sends messages in the TCP/IP protocol addressed to another computer
using its IP (Internet Protocol) address.
The program or device that is used to connect to the internet is called a gateway.
A gateway typically performs the following tasks:
Translating between the IP address on the LAN and the IP address on the internet.
Control of the type of information that can be shared/flow by the LAN and the internet
Caching
Logging internet usage

works of art in just the ten short years that he painted. I had a chance to study Van Gogh in Art

Van Gogh had painted that seemed to match flawlessly with the words being sang. I felt that most of
the paintings as well as the slow music made the slideshow kind of depressing. When really listening

Crimes Involving The Use Of Firearms
Crimes involving the use of firearms consist of around 0.4 percent of all documented offences in
England and Wales, doubling since the mid to late 1990 s (Povey and Kaiza 2006). This is due to the
ever more restrictive legislation and public policy responses. A small number of high profile firearm
homicides have significantly increased the public s apprehensions about the problem of illegal
firearms. Police, politicians and media reports have illustrated the emergence of a criminal gun culture
, predominantly in the inner city areas of England (Bennett and Holloway 2004). Comparatively little
is known on the other hand, regarding criminal attitudes towards and within the market in illegal
firearms therefore limiting the progression of policy, policing practice and an understanding of the
impact of firearms legislation (Bryan 2001).
Gun Crime is a general term used when including all circumstances, when firearms including
shotguns, air guns and imitation firearms are illegally utilised (HMIC 2004). This is inclusive of all
illegal possession offences whilst no other crime has been committed. The presence or absence of a
gun does not impinge on the likelihood that crime will be committed (NCIS 2003). Criminals will be
able to use other weapons as opposed to firearms in order to commit crime and accomplish their
negative intention, as the missing presence of firearms does not mean that crimes involving guns are
easily avoided (Hoskin 2011). Gun control and ownership does not

Evaluating The Impact Of The Internet On Publishers And...
Evaluating the Impact of the Internet on Publishers and Bookstores Using the value change model to
evaluate the impact of the internet requires specific activities to be identified as to where information
systems can be best utilized with a competitive strategic impact to company s market share and
bottom line. This requires these basic activities be viewed as a series of activities that add value to the
company s products or services being offered (Laudon Laudon, 2014, p. 101). According to (Laudon,
2014) these systems within the company must be identified as either a primary or a support activity
including external value partners outside the firm. The Primary activity of B N is to sell books, which
information systems play an intricate role in the accomplishment of this. Not having these information
systems in place would almost guarantee of failure. Therefore, implementing these technological
information systems will create value, to not only the company but also customers alike. The
following list of primary activities is considered the core systems necessary for production and
distribution.  Inbound Logistics Atomization of the warehousing operations  Operations This
would include such things as automated machining systems  Sales and Marketing Allows for a web
based ordering system, thus increasing speed.  Service Computer Management Maintenance
Systems (CMMS), which assists in the planning, tracking, and management of assets.  Outbound

Summary Of Mut-OX In A549 Cells
In this SA, we will study translocation of DNA damage repair proteins from the cytoplasm to
mitochondria in response to mtDNA damage induced by mt OX in A549 cells. We will treat A549
cells with mt OX as mentioned in SA#...., followed by using a SILAC method as described above. We
will perform differential ultracentrifugation to isolate cellular fractions as previously described (18).
The purity of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial fractions will be assessed by western blotting using IκB
α and Tom20 markers, respectively. We expect that mtDNA damage induced by mt OX will cause
translocation of DNA repair proteins from the cytoplasm to mitochondria. Moreover, it was reported
that more than 30 posttranslational modifications including the most ... Show more content on

mtDNA damage will be evaluated by a quantitative method using amplification of mtDNA fragments
of different lengths. Results will be presented as a ratio of long versus short fragments as shown in
Fig. 10 (13, 14).
Studies in human primary ATII cells: We will assess the function of identified translocated
mitochondrial proteins in human ATII cells. We will validate obtained results using these unique cells
isolated from control lung donors and patients with emphysema. We found in our preliminary data that
ATII cells isolated from individuals with this disease have more mtDNA damage and less
mitochondria amount than controls (Fig. 10). We will check expression of identified proteins and
genes by western blotting and RT PCR, respectively in cytoplasmic and mitochondrial fractions. We
expect to identify dysregulated proteins which are involved in mtDNA damage repair in primary ATII
cells isolated from patients with emphysema.
We will also knockdown identified genes in control ATII cells using Sendai virus strategy as
previously reported (21) followed by treatment with mt OX as described in SA#1.1. We will also
overexpress selected genes using adenovirus construct as we previously reported (7) to complement
this study. Moreover, we will analyze mtDNA damage and mitochondria amount as mentioned in

Case Study Of The Lean Kaizen Heinz Ketchup Plan
The Lean Kaizen Heinz Ketchup Plan The continuous cycle of Kaizen activity has seven phases
(Choudhury, 2017). First starting with identifying any opportunities or what s important. Next, the
Kaizen cycle involves analyzing the process, developing an optimal solution and implementing the
solution. Once the solutions are implemented, studying the results are crucial to determine the success
(Choudhury, 2017). Finally, standardizing the successful solutions and planning for the future will
take the organization beyond simple productivity changes. Implementing Lean Kaizen in the Heinz

This analysis enables Kraft Heinz to develop solutions to the waste activities. Perhaps determining if

doing administrative work such as logging information into Salesforce. The analysis may conclude
either a corrective action or preventive action as the solution, for instance eliminating those non
productive customer visits if they are not adding value and being made only to meet the sales call
quota. As a result, implementing successful solutions would help the teams improve productivity,

processes that create excellent sales results (Maskell, 2010). Thus, implementing these measurement
changes combined with a value based approach may lead to

Lincoln And Davis Leadership Essay
Comparing The Political Leadership Of Lincoln and Davis
It may seem self evident that Lincoln was the greater political leader; Lincoln led the winning side
while Davis was defeated. It has though, been thought that once the Northern advantages and Southern
disadvantages have been considered, that it is possible, that almost anyone could have led the North to
victory. If this is so, was it Davis s strong leadership, which ensured that the confederacy survived as
long as it did?
Davis s government has inevitably been blamed for the way it ran the war. Certainly it made mistakes.
But arguably it was no more mistake prone than Lincoln s government. Nor were the Southerners less

The fact that the Union was able to produce both guns and butter helped Northern morale. Most
Northerners supported Lincoln and determined to see the war to a victorious conclusion.
With fewer people, far less in the way of industrial capacity, a less well developed railway system, and
with a Northern blockade disrupting trade with Europe, the odds were stacked highly against the
Confederacy from start. Moreover, while Lincoln took over a going concern in Washington, Jefferson
Davis s administration had to build the confederate government from scratch. To fight let alone to win
the war, Southerners would need to make a far greater sacrifice than the Northerners. Ultimately the
efforts of the Confederate government and the Southern people were in vain. The collapse of Northern
morale was the South s best hope of victory.
The North on the other hand, with its greater manpower and resources, was always favourite to win
the civil war. However, big battalions do sometimes lose wars. If Northern Morale had collapsed, as
American morale collapsed during the Vietnam War, the union could have been defeated. Resources
by themselves do not win wars: they need efficient leadership. Abraham Lincoln was the North s top
leader. He was fortunate in that he took over a going concern. But the extent of that concern should
not be exaggerated. Before 1861 Americans rarely saw

Hippocampus In Social Memory
Early investigations of the role of the hippocampus in social memory involved lesions to the brain
areas that project to and from the hippocampus. One of such areas is medial septum, which has strong
reciprocal projections to and from hippocampal formation (McNaughton Miller 1984; Alonso Köhler
1984; Chandler Crutcher 1983). It has been shown that vincristine induced lesions to the medial
septum impairs social memory (Terranova et al. 1994; Fournier et al. 1993). Similarly, transection of
the fimbria, which carries multiple projections to and from the hippocampus (Wyss et al. 1980; Cassel
et al. 1997) also impairs social recognition memory (Maaswinkel et al. 1996). (but see also Petrulis et

Gender Reflection
The concept of gender is broad but identifying as a female, it has impacted my life in many ways, such
as introducing me to the concept of being a feminist. I would not be the individual I am today without
that. Over time, my gender has also made me a more confident person and given me the strength to
take pride in being a woman: a woman studying science, a woman unafraid to have a voice, a strong
woman. I have become more educated and aware of societal concepts, both lies and truths and a big
part of that was due to friends I made who introduced me to a new mindset and new ways of looking
at things.
Early on in my life, I distinguished the difference between gender which was, with my limited
knowledge only men and woman, due to the difference in the way we were treated. I became familiar
with the stereotypes that society flung on us women cook and clean and men do all the labour. It was a
traditional way of thinking that I grew up with and that didn t change until I was much older, probably
around the age of 13 or 14. My cousin, a brilliantly loud and passionate woman (even at 15 years of
age) introduced the term feminism to me and I truly thought she was crazy and man hating, just like
all the stereotypes led me to believe. I began to learn, though. As time passed, I started absorbing all
sorts of new information and the most important thing was that I educated myself. I looked at gender
again but from a different angle. I questioned society, I questioned everything. Feminism opened a
door to a realm that I had only begun to explore at the time. I have both a younger brother and sister
and I noticed all the pressure around them to be certain ways, especially my brother because growing
up with two older sisters taught him to be gentle and soft spoken, unlike what a real man ought to be
when he grows up. I realized how toxic masculinity could be and I wanted to be a good example to my
siblings and taught myself more on the subject. I taught myself the ways that gender was harmful,
including the notion that we all had to fit a binary.
Growing up, everyone I knew was either male or female . When I became a part of a big community
on certain social medias (tumblr, Instagram) I started making friends who

Gun Safety Research Paper
Boy Scouts Gun Safety
Hey, Parents! We are excited to introduce a gun safety course for the Boy Scouts at the Guadalupe
Parkway Sommerville Centers. The duration of the program will last four weeks, with the last week
being live shooting from a gun range. Our purpose in this gun safety course is to provide our Boy
Scouts with knowledge when it comes to firearm safety. We want to teach them how to handle
properly a firearm and know what to do in the presences of a firearm.
The firearm course instructor is our very own Mr. Luis, who is a certified firearm instructor. Below are
the lesson plans for this four week course.
Week 1: Introductory Week: Scouts will learn the different types of firearms. Wood and plastic guns
are going to serve as practice firearms. Mr. Luis will teach the scouts about various guns in our
modern society, which caliber of bullet each firearm possess, and how to properly hold the wooden or
plastic versions of the gun. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students will have to demonstrate competency in foot placement, hand placement, and display a level
of maturity when handling a firearm. Please note: that the students will still hold the wooden or plastic
versions of the guns and not the real ones, yet.
Week 3: Third Week: Scouts should demonstrate a level of proficiency, maturity, and acuity in
preparation for the gun range, to achieve those three attributes, scouts must pass a gun safety test that

Government Have Too Much Power
Does the Government have too much power?
More than half of the citizens of the United States believe that the government has more power than
they should. This amount is the highest it has ever been and it continues to grow each and every year.
Trusting your government is crucial to building a solid country. If the United States government is
becoming more untrustworthy, the country is sure to fall apart at its seams. The government has too
much control over people because they are constantly watching with cameras and electronics, they can
kidnap or kill you without anyone ever knowing what happened, and they intervene in citizens lives
too often. The government has too much power because they are constantly watching with cameras

They constantly disregard the people s privacy and there personal life. In his essay Civil Disobedience
Henry David Thoreau, speaks on how a free society would be much better than one that is harshly
governed. He is a strong believer that people should do what they think is right and wrong, not what
the government tells you to do. If a plant cannot live according to its nature, it dies; and so a man
(Thoreau). He states that a man should do what he thinks is morally right. He uses a simile to say that
nature functions on it s own with it s own set of rules, as should a man. If nature has been self
sustaining for as long as the world has been around, Thoreau strongly believes that a man should live
by his own rules for the short amount of time that he is alive on this planet and things will go much
smoother than they have in the past. He thinks that the government abuses their power a lot in the
sense of security or privacy. Government is best that governs least (Thoreau). Thoreau says that a
government that does not get into the business of its citizens is the best and, most successful kind. He
strongly dislikes government and believes that one day there should be no government at all and the
people will rule themselves. Thoreau says that the government is much too powerful and they abuse
their excessive power all too often. He was once arrested and thrown in jail for not paying

Chinese Footbinding Essay
Chinese Footbinding
In addressing the subject of footbinding, one primary difficulty becomes apparent that much remains
within the realm of the unknowable. Any factual knowledge about the practice may only be drawn
from 19th and 20th century writings, drawings or photographs. In addition, many of these documents
represent a distinctly Western point of view, as they are primarily composed of missionary accounts
and the literature of the various anti footbinding societies.[1] The historical origins of footbinding are
frustratingly vague, although brief textual references suggest that small feet for women were preferred
as early as the Han dynasty. The first documented reference to the actual binding of a foot is from the
court of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It gradually became the prevailing style and golden lotus became a synonym for bound feet.[5]
One notable personality who aided in the spread of footbinding was the famed writer and scholar Zhu
Xi (1130 1200 A.D.), whose commentaries on the Confucian classics would form the canon of Neo
Confucianism that would dominate Chinese intellectual and philosophical life for six subsequent
centuries. An ardent advocate of footbinding, he introduced the practice into southern Fuijan in order
to spread Chinese culture and teach proper relations between men and women, greatly influencing
other writers who mention the practice as if it were normal.[6]
Another factor contributing to the difficulty in assigning a point of time and origin to the practice is
that the spread of footbinding was neither standardized in style nor universal in practice.[7] With local
variations in method of binding, desired contours, age of initiation, paraphernalia, rituals (both public
and private), shoe patterns and terminologies, it became impossible for a master narrative to emerge.
Although some girls had their feet bound in the extreme and painful golden lotus style, others had
their feet bound in less contorted manners that merely kept the toes compressed or limited the growth
of the foot without breaking any bones.[8] In some areas and among some social groups, such as the
Hakka in southern China, women s feet were generally not bound and even among the imperial courts

Thai Mutual Fund Performance Skill or Luck
ABSTRACT
Using a data set on Thai open end domestic equity funds over the June 2000 to October 2007 period.
We apply a Bootstrap methodology to distinguish between skill and luck for the individual funds. A
Bootstrap approach is necessary because the nonnormal distributions of individual fund alphas. This
study points to the existence of genuine stock picking skill among the top performing Thai equity
mutual funds, performance which is not solely due to good luck. At the bottom fund, our analysis
strongly rejects the hypothesis that most poor performing funds are merely unlucky. Most of these
funds demonstrate bad skill .

Research Question
With mutual fund alphas that deviate significantly from normality, how many funds from a large
group would we expect to exhibit high alphas simply due to luck, and how does this figure compare to
the number we actually observe?
3
Objectives of the Study
1. To study performance of equity funds in Thailand whether equity funds outperform the benchmark.
2. To study whether performance of equity funds in Thailand is due to genuine stock picking skill or in
part of luck.
3. To study the performance persistence of equity funds in Thailand.
Scope of the Study
Weekly returns of the universe of Thai open end, domestic equity funds which have been operated
during 2000 to 2007 period.
Limitation of Study
1. The returns used in this research are returns of mutual funds. So, we can only evaluate the stock
picking skill of all managers of funds, not skill of individual fund manager. 2. The returns used in this
research are not the net returns, which already deducts management fee. So, there is possibility that
the underperformed fund is caused by ineffective management of fund not from lack of manager‟s
skill.
Contribution of the Study
To guide the investors of equity funds in Thailand how to invest in the outperformed fund by
considering past performance of fund and genuine stock picking

Investigating The Chemical Equation For Photosynthesis
Research Question
What is the effect of varying the distance (cm) of the Elodea plant from the light source at (5cm,
15cm, 25cm, 35cm and 45cm) (±0.05) on the photosynthetic rate by counting the number of oxygen

Aim
To investigate the effect of varying the distance (cm) of the Elodea plant from the light source at (5cm,
15cm, 25cm, 35cm and 45cm) (±0.05) on the photosynthetic rate by counting the number of oxygen
bubbles rising up the test tube per minute (bubbles 〖min〗^( 1)).
Background Information
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from
sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP (Farabee, 2010). The chemical
equation for photosynthesis is:
6〖CO〗_2+ H_2 O→C_6 H_12 O_6+ 〖6O〗_2
There are two stages to photosynthesis. The first stage of photosynthesis is a set of reactions typically
referred to as the light independent reactions (Damon, 2007). The light independent reactions
predominantly involve photosynthetic pigments (including chlorophyll) absorbing light energy and
undergoing a conversion into chemical energy known as Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). Also, light
energy is utilised by the plant to undergo a reaction called photolysis of water. In this reaction, a water
molecule is split into its component elements; hydrogen and oxygen (Damon, 2007). The oxygen is
extracted from the plant as a waste product and can

Darwin s Theory Of Mate Selection
Mate Selection Mate selection is the picking and choosing of sexual partners that can be based on both
physical and biological processes. Mate selection, also called sexual selection, is not a random
process. Sexual selection is an evolutionary force that explains the never ending changes of
humankind. According to Darwin s Theory of Sexual Selection, sexual selection is fueled by two
fundamental ideas (Stanford 98). The first idea is that men struggle to find mates. The second idea is
that females struggle to choose the perfect mate. Now, the reason why men struggle to find mates is
because men do not necessarily get to pick and choose their mates. It is mainly females that do the
picking and choosing of mates. Females have limited reproductive potential in comparison to males.
Females have far greater levels of parental investment in comparison to males, since males only need
to gain access to a female, while females have to carry the baby to full term, feed ... Show more

Carey states that females with a waist to hip ratio of 0.7 are most desirable by males. Carey states that
female waist to hip ratios in between 0.67 to 1.18 are attractive to males. A waist to hip ratio of 0.7
means that the waist is narrower than the hips. Likewise, females are attracted to males with a waist to
hip ratio in between 0.8 to 1.0. The reason for human attractiveness to particular waist to hip ratios are
due to the underlying health benefits. Human waist to hip ratio is relative to the distribution of body
fat in the body, and the distribution of body fat is due to two sex hormones; estrogen and testosterone.
Women with the right mixture of estrogen, and men with the right mixture of testosterone will have
ideal waist to hip ratios. According to Carey, men and women that fall into the ideal respective waist
to hip ratios are less susceptible to disease. Also, women with ideal waist to hip ratios have less
difficulty with conceiving

Jacobsen, Kent, Lee, Mather (2011) stated, Since women live longer than men in the United States,
women will continue to make up a majority of the older population in the foreseeable future (pg. 3).
Whereas, this age distribution among men and women are expected to remain approximately the same
between 2009 and 2030, there will be notable changes in the age and gender gap by 2050 as the gap
grows smaller (Jacobsen, Kent, Lee, Mather, 2011). Furthermore, according to Vincent Velkoff (2010),
by the year 2042 the United States will become more racially and ethnically diverse with the
combined minority population expected to become the majority. Thus, as people in the United States
age over the next several decades, the older population will also become a more racially and ethnically
diverse group. In addition, the overall age structure of the population is expected to change a great
deal over the next four decades (Vincent Velkoff, 2010). This will pose even more challenges to policy
makers and programs designed to help the elderly like Medicare and Social Security. Therefore, being
able to project the size and structure of the older population, in regards to age, sex, race, and Hispanic
origin is not only important to public interest, but also private both socially and economically (Vincent
Velkoff, 2010). Another factor that supports this trend includes the environmental factors. The health
and well being of the elderly

  • 2. Similarities And Differences Between Carpet Weavers And... Through the poems, Carpet Weavers and Mid Term Break, poets Carol Rumens and Seamus Heaney communicate a loss of innocence, offering different interpretations on similar themes. Both poems portray the plight of children experiencing a harsh reality which undermines social conventions which shelter children and forces upon them heavy responsibility. In Carpet Weavers the children ascend to maturity, being deprived of a childhood due to their responsibility to earn money labouring in impoverished conditions. Whereas, Mid Term Break traverses the roles of death and bereavement rather than poverty and hardship. Seamus Heaney recounts the death of his younger brother, revealing the nature of children and how they cope with loss. The act of assuming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. How Motivation and Leadership Theories Can Be Applied. MOTIVATION THEORIES: Goal Setting Theory: In the late 1960s, Edwin Locke proposed that intentions to work toward a goad are a major source of work motivation. That is, goals tel an employee what needs to be done and how much effort will need to be made. Specific hard goals produce a higher level of output than does the generalized goal of do your best . Why? The specificity of the goal itself seems to act as an internal stimulus. For instance, when a trucker commits to making 12 round trips between Toronto and Buffalo, New York, each week, this intention gives him a specific objective to try to attain. The conclusion is that intentions as articulated in terms of hard and specific goals are the motivating force. Under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. The Importance Of The Heroic Tale Of Sundiata Throughout history, storytellers have used fantastic fables to entertain his or her audience. Filled with larger than life characters and amazing tales of heroism, on the surface these fables simply seem like mass entertainment much in the same way comic book heroes entertain us today on the silver screen. However, most of the time these epic, fantastic tales have a much deeper purpose for both the storyteller and the audience. While the stories aim to entertain, more importantly, the epic tales exist to hand down crucial histories from generation to generation. This is important to the culture in which the story takes place, and is a true observation for the story of Sundiata, the founding of the Mali Empire, and the descendants of these Mali people. While on the surface, the story is a heroic tale of Sundiata s early life as he overcomes many obstacles, defeats mystical and magical foes, and finally emerges triumphant, it is really a tale designed to teach the audience the history of the Mali Empire and the values and culture of the Mali people. This is tremendously important to the Mali people back when the story was first told and is still important to them today. As a historical oral epic, the tale of Sundiata tells the reader the story of the creation of the Mali Empire. The events of the tale take place during the early 13th century and detail the early, difficult life of Sundiata up until his final victory over the evil Soros. After this victory, Sundiata ... • 6. Describe Michael s Identity In This Is It 1. Aesthetics. How do Michael s wardrobe, dance, vocal, poetic, and performative choices all point to a particular style? What would you, as a critic, call this style, and why? As a critic, I would call Michael s style transgressive. Michael tacitly challenged gendered, sartorial mores and wore women s couture like Givenchy and Balmain, adding androgynous touches like his trademark ornamented glove and cropped pants. His dance skills were similarly daring from his pioneer pop lock style to his signature, risqué crotch grab. His performative choices blended this corporeal innovation with digital spectacle and married with them with a mélange of sound, which distilled elements of pop, funk and soul. Perhaps most transgressive were his vocal choices, however; a high tenor, Michael had a three and a half octave range, according to vocal coach Seth Riggs, and he managed to connect this range in a fluid, unprecedented way. 2. • 7. Call Of The Wild Analysis The novel, call of the wild was about a dog named buck. Getting kidnaped and sold for money, to feed a gambler addiction, he gets put on multiple sled teams and faces rough challenges. Not being used to the cold, he struggles to survive the harsh new environment, dealing with low food and melting ice at times on the Yukon trail. The 2 articles that relate to the novel, talk about those harsh climates, and the diet for the dogs that is needed to keep them going on the trail. The events in the first article relate to the novel because it talks about how the sled dogs and driver had to face warmer climate changes. Just like Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, when they were running on thin ice, and it was spring time when they went out. One event that happened in the article, was when a man was woken by the sound of ice cracking under him, the ice was melting. I was sleeping in my sled bag and I heard a roar, sounded like a freight train. So I threw all my stuff in the sled bag, pulled my dogs and my sled up the bank a bit and turned around, and there was wide open water where the sled was sitting five minutes earlier (Paragraph 4). How the Introduction of the Individual into a Non traditional Sport for His or Her Gender Affects that Individual and the Sport Itself A high school age boy makes the papers when he joins the girls varsity field hockey team at his high school. A woman is judged according to femininity rather than muscle mass in a body building competition. An African American is thought inferior to his white counterparts on the sports field. A woman is discouraged from playing contact sports under the pretext of being too delicate. After all, I myself would have been surprised if a boy showed up on the field one day wearing a skirt like the rest of the team and expecting to play in the game. Part of the problem is that it is so uncommon. People are afraid of things that they ve never seen or done. Non traditional athletes in certain sports are partially unaccepted due to the fact that they are a first. This is part of the reason why Bev (from Pumping Iron II), was so unaccepted by the judges of the women s bodybuilding contest: the judges were disgusted by her muscularity. Images of muscular women... are disconcerting, even threatening... [she was a] threat to established values. (Holmlund 302) There is a first for everything, but firsts are always hard to accept and integrate into society. There was, for instance, a single female member of the wrestling team at my high school. It was something that we d all heard of happening at other high schools, but was never something that we d anticipated coming to our high school. She was seen as being strange: butch, unlady like, even ugly. I never gave her more than a thought because I felt the same. In this context however, of non traditional athletes in sports, I see how hard she must have worked to overcome the obstacle of being the social outcast due to her perceived peculiarity. Wrestling must have been something that she loved to do. If I can respect women like Martina Navratilova or Tony Stone for being pioneer women in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Douglas Adams uses cause and effect to make a persuasive agrument about the relative impact of the an action by explaining cause and effect is a never ending cycle. Adam s text is shows how people actions can effect people/things and aren t consciously aware of how this effect people every day life. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the effects of the actions that are being taken it is just a part of life. Arthur said, I seem to be having a tremendous difficulty with my life style by Arthur saying caused a tremendous war that could of been prevented for happening. A rhetorial similarity between The Penultimate Peril and The Hitchiker s Guide is both texts argue that cause and effect have a cycle that keeps going and certain things led to something and than back again. Peoples actions determine the different outcomes that a person decides to do. Than the outcomes have other outcomes and that continues to go in a circle. A difference between the two texts is Adams thinks each individual cause has a specific outcome while Snickets thinks an action can have many outcomes. In The Hitchiker s Guide the reader can see there is only one cause to why everything happen he is more specific in his story. In The Penultimate Peril Snickets the reader can see the mysteries could have been solved in many ways. Snikets follow the basic rule of cause and effect which shows any effect can have multiple possible causes; the task of cause and effect is to determine the correct one. Snicket made a metaphor to that when he said, the world is like a calm pond, and that anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the pond, spreading circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by one tiny action. • 10. Essay on How Asian Americans are Portrayed in Hollywood... Asian American actors and actresses are portrayed in Hollywood movies as always being the silent and yielding foreign victims to social injustice and prejudice. Whether or not these depictions are true, they are nonetheless stereotypes that Hollywood producers have come up with. According to the US Census in the year 2000, Asian Americans make up 4.2% of the entire American population, and knowing that most Asian Americans live on the west and east coast of the United States, many Americans living in central parts of this country have not really been exposed to any Asian Americans. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His men get defeated by other white gangs which clearly shows that Hollywood wants you to think that Asians are inferior to white people. In Richard Fung s analysis on Sally s Beauty Spot, The fact that Sally never kisses an Asian unfortunately reflects the absence of Asian men from Western sexual representation (Fung 169). Asian actors rarely get to be involved in on screen romantic relationships with their co star Asian actresses because Hollywood does not believe Asian men are capable of being sexual. They would rather have them doing fighting scenes or even playing nerdy roles than to allow them to do romantic scenes. Similarly, in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, only Bond is involved in a relationship with the Asian female character played by Michelle Yeoh. And majority of the time in most films, Asian actors and actresses are instructed to speak with an Asian accident and in broken English. Likewise for Asian actresses, they have been pictured as exotic, highly sexual, overly feminine, and eager to please women capable of easily falling in love with white men. But what Hollywood really fails to portray about Asian women in Asia is that they are prostitutes trying to make a living to put food on the table for their families. People do not realize that these Asian women come from poverty and did not receive the same education as American women. These Asian women are not choosing to have sex with white males, but because their clients have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symbols In A Rose For Emily The literary works in the short story ¨A Rose For Emily¨ by American Author William Faulkner is an influential work because of the symbols, motifs, and theme that are expressed throughout the story, which are based upon love and relationships. Faulkner portrays the story in third person limited which allows us to know the thoughts and feelings of a single charcter. The narrator is never identified throughout the story, but when we examine the tone we can understand there is this we person, who changes his/her mind about Miss Emily at certain points in the narration. A symbol is something used for or regarded as representing something else. One instance of symbolism in this short story is in the title itself. Romantic Impact On Napoleon Napoleon Bonaparte and the wars he fought against Great Britain, the conveniently named Napoleonic Wars had a lasting and profound impact on British citizens and society. Napoleon for a brief period had transformed a nation of anarchy and instability into the most powerful empire in Europe and posed a serious threat to Britain s perceived dominance and invulnerability. The fear of a Napoleonic invasion spread across Britain, an event that had it been realised may have been welcomed by many within the nation. The French general turned emperor was unquestionably the British governments most imposing enemy but there were many individual Britons who held Napoleon in much higher esteem than their own monarch/Regent. He notes that the Lake poets originally revered Napoleon but as the wars continued they became increasingly conservative and critical of him. He recalls that William Wordsworth s primary reason for his disillusionment with Napoleon was his 1804 coronation, other Romantics such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge however, were not so clear about their reasons for resenting Napoleon and Stock states that this inability to decide upon a definitive opinion characterizes the Romantic understanding of Bonaparte because the transition from reverence to hatred was so extreme and unexpected. Like radicals and loyalists, the Romantics also offered different interpretations of Napoleon in their works especially on the concept of his humanity . Coleridge, Walter Scott and Robert Southey believed Napoleon to be an innovative politician and therefore, very human, while Percy Bysshe Shelley too regarded Napoleon as human but believed his political genius was a fallacy as he merely reverted France back to monarchy; whereas Lord Byron considered Napoleon to be a metaphysical being. Stock states that the Romantics also make quite extensive use of Satan when interpreting Napoleon and Coleridge and Scott classify him as evil incarnate to the point where they desire his death. Stock argues that some Roamntics such as William Hazlitt used the Satanic image of Napoleon to personify him as a revolutionary figure inverting political norms. Despite previously denigrating him as a mere politician, Coleridge too personifies Napoleon as a presence rather than a human being and Stock states Hazlitt celebrates Napoleon as an Idea not an ... • 17. Argumentative Essay On Declining Fish Over fishing our waters is causing a great deal of concern amongst environmentalist and commercial fishermen. According to the Declining Fish Stock video, the average commercial fishermen s catch is about 20,000 pounds. This has been estimated to equal a couple hundred fish per day per vessel (Declining Fish, 2007). Some studies indicate that commercial fishing fleets have stripped the ocean waters of at least 90 percent of its big fish (Declining Fish, 2007). This has begun to cause heavy competition between commercial fishermen who are left competing for the other 10 percent of the remaining fish population (Declining Fish, 2007). Studies indicate that our oceans are not as resilient as we had once believed (Declining Fish, 2007). According to Dr. Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, we will never again be able to fish our waters at the level that we have been over the last half century (Declining Fish, 2007). Dr. Jackson also states that over fishing is more destructive to the ocean waters than toxic pollution or degrading water quality (Declining Fish, 2007). This is a frightening thought and seems to have environmentalists and commercial fishermen at each other s throats. When asked if the damage to the fish population is at a level of completion, Dr. Jackson said that the damage was near completion but that the damage could be reversed if we take much needed drastic measures to ensure that these fish have a chance to repopulate (Declining Fish, ... This theme is significantly portrayed in the play Othello, in which a black general living in Venice must constantly struggle to balance his dual nature of both Moor and Venetian. It is apparent that before the play begins, Othello has not yet resolved his duplicitous self image; however, throughout the action of the play, he is put in a maliciously designed situation which causes his insecurities and self doubt to breed, allowing the Venetian?s stereotype of the brutal and ignorant black man to consume Othello s eloquence and education adopted ... The various opinions of Othello in the beginning of the play show that despite the fact that he can hold a position of power in Venetian society, it is nearly impossible for him to obtain universal respect from the people who will never accept his exotic appearance and heritage. It would be difficult for anyone to come to terms with such contradictory notions of themselves, and Othello is no exception. Once Iago sets the stage for Othello?s fall, the negative emotions aroused in the general cause him to release the lunatic black man that the insiders have feared lies within ?The Moor?s? austere composure. Many critics have suggested that Othello?s extreme jealousy is what amounts to his belief in Iago?s twisted tale of Desdemona?s infidelity and thus his ultimate downfall; however, it seems more likely that it is Othello?s insecurity over his sense of self that allows this manipulation to amount to such an extreme representation of character. This however is teachable moment were the students have a opportunity to talk about the racial history, the teachers should be able to guide the conversation better (Beck). When correctly guided the students better know our history and we learn from it so in the future we make better decisions. Because the students are the future decision makers and are therefore suppose to be openmind of the outcomes. Dr. Nel agrees that the discomfort created by this book needs a sensitive teacher to guide this experience (Beck). If there is discomfort then society clearly has not progressed. As Nel said in his interview that only way to teach Huckleberry Finn the right way is to be uncomfortable and discuss the situation rather than ignoring it and pretending everything is okay (Beck). In order for the students to acquire the most knowledge is by receiving the original version of Huckleberry Finn . • 23. Literary Criticism In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Literary Criticism In the short stories The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin and A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, the authors use literary criticism so the reader can dissect the many different literary elements such as symbolism and vivid ironic imagery that help explain the parallel theme going on in both stories. To achieve a world with peace throughout and reach a state of utopia some moral and ethical decay will take place. Both stories have social issues that test the citizens moral and ethical beliefs throughout the story, and actually show how the society is decaying because of what they are doing. The short story by Ursula Le Guin, is about a flawless utopian society that puts all of its guilt onto the misery of a child who is locked away in a cellar broom closet in order to keep the society in picture perfect condition. (Attebery). One of the literary devices she uses throughout the story is symbolism. Le Guin makes this child carry the burden of the society Omelas symbolic to Jesus because in the Bible, Jesus dies on the cross and takes all of the sins away from the believers. This symbolism shows a moral decay within the society because the burden is no longer casted and saved by written beliefs who promise to take these troubles and cast them away. It is being given to a child who in return can give nothing back. This child didn t deserve this punishment and Le Guin tells the reader that some people know about the child, but instead of trying to help they just ignore the pain this child endures for them while they live their perfect life. Just like in the Bible, Jesus did so much for his people and his disciples, but when he was on the cross no one came to help him, and his people that he endured so much for just watched him die on the cross. This kid will live the same life that Jesus did toward the end. Everyone will turn and not come to his rescue and the child dies alone in suffering with the burdens of the world. In addition to using symbolism, Le Guin writes using vivid imagery to describe the theme of the story. She gives the reader an image of the room the child lives. A small number of high profile firearm homicides have significantly increased the public s apprehensions about the problem of illegal firearms. • 36. Hippocampus In Social Memory Early investigations of the role of the hippocampus in social memory involved lesions to the brain areas that project to and from the hippocampus. One of such areas is medial septum, which has strong reciprocal projections to and from hippocampal formation (McNaughton Miller 1984; Alonso Köhler 1984; Chandler Crutcher 1983). It has been shown that vincristine induced lesions to the medial septum impairs social memory (Terranova et al. 1994; Fournier et al. 1993). Similarly, transection of the fimbria, which carries multiple projections to and from the hippocampus (Wyss et al. 1980; Cassel et al. 1997) also impairs social recognition memory (Maaswinkel et al. 1996). • 38. Gender Reflection The concept of gender is broad but identifying as a female, it has impacted my life in many ways, such as introducing me to the concept of being a feminist. I would not be the individual I am today without that. Over time, my gender has also made me a more confident person and given me the strength to take pride in being a woman: a woman studying science, a woman unafraid to have a voice, a strong woman. I have become more educated and aware of societal concepts, both lies and truths and a big part of that was due to friends I made who introduced me to a new mindset and new ways of looking at things. Early on in my life, I distinguished the difference between gender which was, with my limited knowledge only men and woman, due to the difference in the way we were treated. I became familiar with the stereotypes that society flung on us women cook and clean and men do all the labour. It was a traditional way of thinking that I grew up with and that didn t change until I was much older, probably around the age of 13 or 14. My cousin, a brilliantly loud and passionate woman (even at 15 years of age) introduced the term feminism to me and I truly thought she was crazy and man hating, just like all the stereotypes led me to believe. I began to learn, though. As time passed, I started absorbing all sorts of new information and the most important thing was that I educated myself. I looked at gender again but from a different angle. I questioned society, I questioned everything. Feminism opened a door to a realm that I had only begun to explore at the time. I have both a younger brother and sister and I noticed all the pressure around them to be certain ways, especially my brother because growing up with two older sisters taught him to be gentle and soft spoken, unlike what a real man ought to be when he grows up. I realized how toxic masculinity could be and I wanted to be a good example to my siblings and taught myself more on the subject. I taught myself the ways that gender was harmful, including the notion that we all had to fit a binary. Growing up, everyone I knew was either male or female . Any factual knowledge about the practice may only be drawn from 19th and 20th century writings, drawings or photographs. In addition, many of these documents represent a distinctly Western point of view, as they are primarily composed of missionary accounts and the literature of the various anti footbinding societies.[1] The historical origins of footbinding are frustratingly vague, although brief textual references suggest that small feet for women were preferred as early as the Han dynasty. The first documented reference to the actual binding of a foot is from the court of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It gradually became the prevailing style and golden lotus became a synonym for bound feet.[5] One notable personality who aided in the spread of footbinding was the famed writer and scholar Zhu Xi (1130 1200 A.D.), whose commentaries on the Confucian classics would form the canon of Neo Confucianism that would dominate Chinese intellectual and philosophical life for six subsequent centuries. An ardent advocate of footbinding, he introduced the practice into southern Fuijan in order to spread Chinese culture and teach proper relations between men and women, greatly influencing other writers who mention the practice as if it were normal.[6] Another factor contributing to the difficulty in assigning a point of time and origin to the practice is that the spread of footbinding was neither standardized in style nor universal in practice.[7] With local variations in method of binding, desired contours, age of initiation, paraphernalia, rituals (both public and private), shoe patterns and terminologies, it became impossible for a master narrative to emerge. Although some girls had their feet bound in the extreme and painful golden lotus style, others had their feet bound in less contorted manners that merely kept the toes compressed or limited the growth of the foot without breaking any bones.[8] In some areas and among some social groups, such as the Hakka in southern China, women s feet were generally not bound and even among the imperial courts of ... Background Information Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP (Farabee, 2010). Mate selection, also called sexual selection, is not a random process. Sexual selection is an evolutionary force that explains the never ending changes of humankind. According to Darwin s Theory of Sexual Selection, sexual selection is fueled by two fundamental ideas (Stanford 98). The first idea is that men struggle to find mates. The second idea is that females struggle to choose the perfect mate. Now, the reason why men struggle to find mates is because men do not necessarily get to pick and choose their mates. It is mainly females that do the picking and choosing of mates. Females have limited reproductive potential in comparison to males.
