This document discusses various patterns of organization that can be used when writing. It describes chronological patterns, which organize information by time; sequential patterns, which arrange information step-by-step; spatial patterns, which are based on physical location; compare-contrast patterns; advantages-disadvantages patterns; cause-effect patterns; problem-solution patterns; and topical patterns. Examples are provided for each type of organizational pattern to illustrate how they can be applied. The objective is for learners to learn techniques for summarizing academic texts using different patterns of organization.
