Packaging materials: Paper based packaging for foodDr. Jilen Mayani
Paper is a very versatile material. It is produced from cellulosic, naturally renewable fibres. It is therefore considered as an environmentally friendly material, being easily recycled, composted or incinerated after use. It may be used in food packaging applications within a wide range of grammages, being designed as wrapping paper, folding box board or corrugated board, for direct or indirect contact, i.e. as primary, secondary or tertiary packaging. Other paper grades, such as tissue paper, may be used in occasional contact with foodstuffs.
When paper and paper based products are intended, or likely, to come into contact with food, manufacturers follow relevant and acknowledged regulations and guidelines to design manufacturing processes and recipes, and ensure consumer safety.

Food Packaging is one of the most important processes in food industry which helps in maintaining the quality of food products during storage, transportation and distribution. It is primarily done in order to protect the food products from external influences like biological, chemical or mechanical damage; to contain the food, preserve it in its state as packed by preventing quality deterioration, and to attract consumers and provide product and nutritional information. For years, ancient people consumed fresh food which they could gather from their natural surroundings without storing the food. As the nomadic culture evolved, the need for containers to store food has also emerged. It took over 300 years for food packaging to finally evolve into the current form. There are many packaging materials used ever since. Each type of packaging material has a different role to play in packaging. Also packaging material like biodegradable packaging or edible packaging may ensure the world’s need for environment friendly and natural foods which is a major global concern now-a-day. The food packaging industry has revolutionized to a great extent in the recent years with advancement of novel food packaging technologies, such as active packaging, aseptic packaging, smart packaging, bioactive packaging, edible packaging which are research trends. Advances in such packaging technology may prevent food spoilage by maintaining the food standard at the highest possible degree which may help in satisfying the needs of consumers throughout the food supply chain as well as fulfilling the requirements as per Food Packaging Laws. Keywords: packaging, packaging material, food packaging techniques, novel packaging technology, food packaging law, storage Introduction Packing: Food packaging is done in order to provide the basic protection to food materials from various direct and indirect contaminants, apart from protecting the food from damage, leakage, etc. Food packaging also aids in preservation and storage of food throughout the supply chain. Packaging: Packaging is generally done as a final process where packed goods/products are further packaged into bigger boxes, courier bags, bubble envelopes, cardboard, cartons or whatsoever. However, both the term packing and packaging are commonly used interchangeably. Packaging is an art of presenting a product. It is more about the appearance, colour, design or presentation of the final product wrapped in a material to attract the consumers. Packaging also plays an important role in tempting custome
The first impression is the last impression, and boxed packaged goods play an essential role in creating your first impression on your consumers. If you want to take your business to the next level, you should never overlook product packaging.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. The following heads will be
discussed…
Package for a reason
Paper with properties
Why water resistance?
Treatments
Application in food industries
Standards
3. Food without proper packaging…
Consequences
rotten food
disorganised and
least appealing
no hygiene
wastage of food
zero convenience
4. Basic packaging materials…
The main purpose of packaging are to hold its contents securely
to prevent leakage and breakage, to protect the foods from
different hazard like germs, heat, moisture loss or moisture pick
up, etc. To protect the contents while distribution, etc. For all
types of packaging, there are different types of packages.
Paper and
paperboard
Glass Plastic Metals
5. Water resistant paper packaging…
Easy biodegradability
Cost-effective
Efficient natural hydrophobic coating
Number of options available for development
No product infusion
6. What is water resistance paper?
The ability of paper to be able
to resist penetration of water
to some extent.
paper itself is not water
resistant.
rather it easily gets
dissolved in water.
to be able to protect food
from getting damaged by
water penetration it can be
layered with a film of
material which can serve
the purpose.
imparts a smoothness,
gloss, and level surface to
paper to enhance printing
7. Different coatings that can be used…
Paper
Wax
Biopolymer
Fluorinated
resins
Foil
Alginate
s &
chitosan
s
Clay
9. Special reference…
C-series alginates
The C-series are sodium alginate
products for use in papermaking, paper
coating, textiles, printing and certain
specialty industries.
• provide excellent water retention.
• reduced porosity for release grades.
• improved binder flexibility.
• improved pigment dispersion.
10. Some added differences…
Wax paper
Wax paper is coated with a
soybean based or paraffin
wax in order to become non-
stick and resistant to
changes in moisture.
it helps to keep water in or
out, so juicy foods stay moist
and crunchy foods don’t get
soggy. As a result was paper
is excellent for both storing
and presenting food.
found in rolls, pop up
sheets, bags etc.
Parchment paper
Parchment paper is
coated with silicone
or quilon to create a
non-stick and heat-
resistant surface.
it is either bleached
(translucent white)
or unbleached.
it comes in
rectangular sheets,
rolls and circular
sheets.
12. Food packaging industries …
Packaging not only provides important information to the
customers but also acts as a shield to the outer atmosphere.
Food
Highly
perishable food
products
Semi-
perishable food
products
Non perishable
food products.
Water resistant packaging
Often tends to breadth so
WVTR should be restricted
by using such packaging.
Fruits and vegetables are
prone to browning and
spoilage by Clostridium
botulinum, therefore
requires least moisture
production.
Spices and flours cannot
come in contact with water
hence require a minimum
moisture content.
13. Paper and board materials intended to come in contact with
food products shall be
of uniform formation, thickness, and substance
free from visible specks, grease marks, cuts, pinholes and
other blemishes .
The paper used for the manufacture of boxes, cartons,
plates, cups and paper lids or paper which are meant to be
directly in contact with food shall be of food grade and shall
be free from contaminants .
Paper and board materials used for the manufacturing of
containers for packing or storing .
Standards …
14. Pros and cons…
Pros
• High oil or grease proof
properties can be obtained in
this material.
• Transparent, neutral and
non reactive packaging
materials be it primary or
secondary.
• Increases shelf life of the
product enclosed.
Cons
• Bioactive coatings are more
prone to microbial attacks
• cross polymers therefore a
huge amount of plasticizers
are used to soften the
material and make it more
mixable.
• A costly affair takes place.
15. Sustainability …
Paper is made of wood, a truly sustainable and renewable
resource.
Forest certification ensures wood comes from well- managed
forests.
Providing a better output the new technology firmly fits into the
visible gaps to make the product more and more renewable.
16. Conclusion…
The interactions between two materials and the substrate
are variable, and could bring about a comparative
advantage for paper-based packaging producers when
compared with synthetic barrier materials. Applying bio-
based materials could improve the barrier properties of
paperboard for food-packaging applications. Depending
on the paper substrate, specific barrier properties were
differently affected, and could be selectively optimized
and adjusted for the consumer’s needs.
17. • Greater speed in involving IS standards and expert scientific
advice;
• Increased inclusiveness of higher ecofriendly standard
development process, including risk assessment;
• Greater usefulness of standards in terms of relevance to their
needs and timeliness; and
• More effective capacity-building for development of national
food control systems.
