Cinema as a Medium of Communication
“A Pictures is worth a thousand words…
Then how many words Cinema is worth
which is a Combination of Millions of
picture.”
Mass Media
• The mass media is a diversified collection of media
technologies that reach a large audience via mass
communication. The technologies through which this
communication takes place include a variety of outlets.
• Mass media is a form of media which is addressed for
large audiences (masses).
• It can be any form of media, broadcast such as television
or radio, films, print media such as newspapers,
magazines, pamphlets etc.

Ages Of Cinema
• The Silent Age (1913 – 1927)
• The Transition Age (1928-1932)
• The Hollywood studio age (1932-1946)
• The Internationalist Age (1947-1959)
• The New Wave age (1960-1980)
• The Mass – Media Age (1980-Presesnt)
Cinema
• Cinema or film a form of Mass Media has become a powerful tool
since the day it was introduced to the world.
• Cinematographic word came from the Greek words κίνημα (kinema),
meaning "movement, motion" and γράφειν (graphein) meaning "to
record“, together meaning "recording motion“
• Film is a means of creative expression
• Cinema has certainly some clear advantages over other media. It
combines primarily, both audio and video and is thus very appealing to
the eyes and the ears
• It performs the functions of mass media like information, education,
entertainment and transmission of culture or social change
History of Cinema
• 10 Lumière brothers' short films in Paris on 28 December
1895
• 1890s films became several minutes long
• first successful permanent theatre showing only films was
"The Nickelodeon“
• In 1929, "The Lights of Newyork" the first talking film was
screened.
• The early 1990s saw the development of a commercially
successful independent cinema in the United States
• In 20s The documentary film also rose as a commercial
genre for perhaps the first time
Brief history of Indian cinema
• The first Indian feature film, Pundalik was made in 1912, But it was shot by
English man and it never really received the acclaim of being an independent
feature film.
• In 1913 Dadasaheb produced the first Indian film "Raja Harishchand“ since then
to 1981 more than 15 thousand movies were produced in India.
• In 1983 it was India's sixth largest industry, grossing around 600$ annually.
• The first ever movie to be screened in India was in Watsons Hotel in Bombay on
the 7th of July 1986.
• In 1932 Indrasabha has about 70 songs. This was the era when music became a
vital part of the industry.
• Films are made in almost 30 of the official languages but among them few are
very famous and commercialized. Those languages are Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam,
Kanada, Bengali, Telugu. This is a great deal of mobility in the Indian film industry
Cinema
• Almost every person of the society has participated in the activity of going
to cinema hall and enjoying a film.
• According to Jovett and Linton, "obviously there is still something unique
and inherently appealing about going to the movies", and this is clearly
different from other mass media experiences". (1989: 89).
• The social institution of movie going is firmly established in our society and
movies have played an important part as one of the factors contributing to
the dramatic changes which have taken place in the last 50 years in the
way we live.
• They have provided us not only with entertainment, but also with ideas,
and it would be difficult to conceive our society without them.
Cinema
• According to John F. Kennedy “The motion picture today is the greatest
medium of expression the world has ever known. [It is] capable of giving life
and form to all ideas, practical and emotional ...Its only limitation [is] human
ingenuity “
• Cinema has perhaps the greatest potential to be the most effective mass
media instrument. Besides it can easily become a means of mass instruction
and mass education.
• With the development of color cinematography, and stereophonic sound, it is
certainly one up on other media. The moral values conveyed through the
medium of cinema have a lasting effect on the audience.
• The audience also has a moral, emotional involvement in the course of
events and the roles of various characters, their language and style of
speaking does leave an impression on the spectators.
Cinema and
Mass Media
information
education
entertainment
transmission
of culture
social change
Information and
Inspiration
• Movies that provide us
information, easily and
effectively
• Documentaries can help to get
very deep knowledge about any
matter
• other biographical movie can
also be very informative
• Movies that are based on real
events also somehow educative
in their own way.
Education and
Messege
• We learned Hindi and most of
English Words from TV!
• The people who are
uneducated, Cinema helps to
Understand.
• There are several movies, that
are trying to teach us
something.
Entertainment
Social change and Motivation
Good
Impact
• Inspires
• Moral lessons
• Life lessons
• Broadness of Mind
Bad
Impact
• People learn bad things
• Misleading Youth
• Stunts
• Bad influence on Children
Against of it….
• There is no doubt that cinema entertains the masses; but
it does not educate them.
• Today, people do not like taking advices and films based
on giving pieces of advices to the audience fails
miserably. Hence, the director whose sole aim is to gain a
profit from these films gives all such kind of non-sense in
order to gain peoples interest and money.
Conclusion
• The film industry has grown rapidly for the past years and
has brought about a lot of changes in the society.
• It effects in a good way also and a bad way too
• It’s up to people how they take it
• Film is a powerful and effective genre of communication
• Films draw heavily from reality, portraying situations that
have resemblance to the everyday stresses and
aspirations of viewers' lives. The movies recognize the
link between their lives and films in both general and
specific terms.
