The History of Film
By Madeleine Brown
Origins of Films (1800s)
In the 1800s the first ‘moving pictures’ where made by
flickering through different frames to trick the mind into
thinking that the picture was moving. These machines that
made the first moving picture were called Phenakistoscope.
After this Reels of film were used which would be
projected with light behind the film, the first of these
films were silent as it was only picture being shown.
Sometimes these films were accompanied by an
orchestra or voice over to help enhance the viewing
experience for the audience.
In the 1900s films started to have degree of
editing to them and integrate narrative to
them leading to how we view films today.
This helped make film more continuous
and easier to follow.
The 1900s
Nickelodeon era was around 1905 and made a cheap
way to watch films (five cent per film/ a nickel), this
way of cheaper viewing made film available to a greater
audience of people and grew the appeal of cinema.
Around 1920 film was used for propaganda and
to let films makers start going into
documentaries.
During this time period Hollywood started to
arise where film stars and incredible amounts
of films where coming out of Hollywood.
Studios were also starting to be built up like
Warner Bros. and Disney.
The 1920s
These major film studios also made there own
places to show there films known as ‘movie
palaces’ these halls had many seats and had
room for orchestras. This ended the
Nickelodeon Era.
Actors and actresses were given a lot of
recognition due to the publicity campaigns
during this time. These actors were completely
controlled, this led the actors to enduring an
immense amount of stress which usually ended
their contracts.
The eras most prominent feature was it use of
sound. These films did very well in the box
office but were often quite poor quality. These
films that included sounds were often
dialogue heavy plays with actors that were not
very experienced as well as microphones that
did not move.
The 1930s
In this time more genres were being
developed such as gangster, musicals,
newspaper reporting, comedies, westerns and
horror films. This led to new and interesting
narratives.
In the 1940s there was a large advancement in
technology such as special effects, Sound, Use of colour
and cinematography. These technologies made watching
and making films more enjoyable.
The 1940s
The film industry also helped out the government with
war propaganda in WII during this time.
Most of the films in this time had
something to do with the war in the
narrative or a more realistic view of
period dramas, some famous films from
this time like ‘Casablanca’ or ‘The
Hollywood Canteen’ are good example
of the films made in 1940s.
During this era drive in theaters became
incredibly popular as well as the film
industry be more focused on a younger
generation.
The 1950s
After WW2 Youths where appealed to with
more rebellious actors like James Dean and
Marilyn Monroe. Companies also tried to
appeal to younger generations with adding
rock n’ roll to films.
In this time though there was
also a decline in film
attendance with the wide
spread use of television set
and broadcasting.
The decade of film focused on Social
changes in civil rights and fun and fashion.
During this time film in America started to
decrease film production with a lack of a
budget to support it because of the rise in
popularity of television sets.
The 1960s
To try and boost ticket sales for films
prices were lowered to as low as a dollar
per ticket. Some large companies
Disney sold props from films or made
theme parks to make money. In this
time traditional Hollywood was ending.
Films in this decade were very military based due to
the Vietnam war. This decade was also a lot freer in
expression through films with language, adult
content, sexuality and violence this led to film makers
to take more risks with their films.
The 1970s
Companies also tended to invest a lot of money in
fewer films to try and achieve a blockbuster film.
Special effects became very important with the
more youth orientated audience.
VHS Players became a thing as well as
laser disks this increased purchased of
home video players increased profits of
companies.
Films were made for entertainment than to be
thinking .
The 1980s
A lot of famous blockbusters like ‘Return of the Jedi’
and ‘ET’ were made in this decade
Budgets increased massively in this decade to
accommodate the special effects used and high end
actors.
In this decade multi screen cinemas where very
popular with large complexes where people
could go and watch a selection of films.
The 1990s
Many special effects where used in this time
which meant that budgets were larger for
scenes like car chases.
Actors and actresses like Tom Cruise
and Eddie Murphy cost a lot to cat in
films.
Video rental stores also became very
popular in this time.
Blu-Ray disks were invented, giving better
ways of viewing films at home.
The 2000s
Portable films on phones and tablets.
3D screenings, IMAX and CGI give films a
appeal for new generations to come and see
new technologies in work.
Streaming services also became a lot more
popular like Amazon Prime and Netflix where
the viewer can pause wherever they like with a
large choice of films to choose from. This
freedom with film is becoming a lot more appeal
to viewers than cinemas.
