Papa Roach - Broken Home music video analysis
1. Ryan Banks
Papa Roach – Broken Home
Purpose – The purpose of the video is so that their song can be televised, making it a
good marketing campaign to sell their song. By making a music video, it gives the
audience something to watch on their TVs, Laptops or PC’S meaning more people
will watch it and listen to their song. This will make people more aware that the song
is coming out as it can be shown on a variety of platforms.
Form – The video last 3 minutes and 44 seconds long for Papa Roach’s song, Broken
Home.
Content – In the video there are a lot of flashbacks to show his childhood, they use
cutaways throughout the video to show this. The camera used throughout the video
is a handheld camera; this allows the singer to break the fourth wall and interact
with us by physically grabbing the camera and shake it about to show his anger and
rage whilst screaming at us. The camera uses a lot of close up shots in the song with
the singer looking right at us; this makes the song more personal and allows us to
see his pain. The setting where they’re performing is in the house where he grew up,
you see this in the flashbacks. The video goes through pictures of the abuse him and
his mother experienced, it uses a flash transition between the photos and makes it
seem like a family photo album and the pictures change quickly to match the pace of
the song. The band in the song are dressed completely in black, this could be to
show that he is grieving for the death of his childhood and that his father left him.
The lighting in the house is very dark and doesn’t seem to inviting, not much of the
house is lit up. The colour of the walls and furniture are all dim colours, not very
bright which sets the dark mood on the house.
Meaning – The meaning of the video is so the audience can physically see what he
went through. It allows us to see and experience his parents arguing and the abuse
he had because of it. It lets the audience see that no one in the household are
getting along and their relationships are broken, supporting the title ‘Broken Home’.
This could be trying to show a stereotype of American families and suggest that they
aren’t all as happy and connected as TV shows and films show us. By using the family
photo album effect, it takes what people consider as happy memories and gives
them a dark twist and breaks that original view. Such as the happy photos of them
playing catch quickly turns into a broken window and the kid being abused.
Genre – The genre of this music video is both performance and narrative.
Throughout the video it goes between the band performing and flashbacks of his
childhood.
Intended Audience – The intended audience for the song would be 15-24 year olds,
this is because he is around 25 years old and he is looking back at his childhood,
aiming at anyone else who may have experienced the same things. It’s also intended
for the social economic grouping E; this is people with disposable incomes that will
encourage them to buy the track, as they don’t have any bills. It is also aimed at
males as the song is about male abuse from father to son and father to mother.
