2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. OUTSIDE-MOR MOR
Idea 1:
Overall idea is that its about someone trying to escape a tribe/cult/
or a certain way of living and breaking out of an isolated life.
Someone being chased and hiding from these people that keep
them isolated or trapped filming from a first person perspective and
also a birds eye perspective.
The characters who belong the the tribe/cult dressed in creepy
monochrome outfits and all looking the same displaying the idea
that this one person is sick of living the same as all these other
people and essentially wanting to breakout of the group. The ”main
character” had obviously been previously wearing this outfit but has
since ripped it to pieces and attempted to wipe of the makeup to
show they don’t want to be associated with this group of people and
showing that they ae breaking free and trying to get away from what
is going on.
The whole video is narrative based however there will be parts of
preformance where the main character lip syncs to the song
although this wont be apparent throughout the entire course of the
video.
The video will end on a open ended note therefore no real ending
which will eave the viewer confused and unsure to how the story
6. OUTSIDE-MOR MOR
Idea 2:
The whole video will be as if it is a live preformance in a run down pub with just a
micropone on a stand and a band in the background. The audience will be sat
around old wooden tables with candels in the middle of the tables all with drinks
looking miserable and bored and depressed. At the begging of the song the
“singer”/”performer” will also be looking miserable and dpressed but also awkard
and as the song goes into the chorous the mood will begin to change and the
audience aswell as the preformer will begin to become more lively.
The preformer will being wearing a nude coloured suite looking very plain and
boring apart from on his face which is stange makeup making him look almost
supernatural and as the song goes on it will be removed by him dragging it off
his face.
When it becomes more lively the audience will start to pay less attention to the
preformer as they will be acting as if the song had put them into a trance and will
be staring blankly but dancing as if in another dimension. The preformer will be
getting dragged around by dancers in full black outfits which will come on to the
stage as the song progresses.
At the end of the video the vibe and feel of the atmosphere will go back to as it
was at the beginning of the video as if all the video was just a trance and didn’t
actually happen.
7. OUTSIDE-MOR MOR
Idea 3
A more simple idea of someone lip syncing to the song
but walking around as if his very day life filmed on a fish
eye lense so that it is first person perspective this will
allow the lyrics to be the most important part of the
video rather than the the footage of the video.
Setting will be walking round a council state going to
shops and getting on with everyday life making it easy to
relate to the viewer but not relly in a noticeable way so
that it dosent take the attention away from the lyrics.
8. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
10. LOOSE ENDS- STICKY
FINGERS
In terms of art design the video displays a range of blues and dull colours this is
apparent in the setting of the video creating a depressing and dull feeling.
However the characters costumes ( mostly the main character) the colours are
brighter and when in context with the lyrics of the song it shows these people are
more outgoing and have more outrageous ideas and opinions this is also
reflected in the way they act during the video.
Where the editing of the video is concerned the footage is regularly matched up
with the beat of the music. In some stages of the video there is a split screen
example showing a person/character alongside a building or for example rose
petals I think the rose petals on the floor alongside the girl gives off connotations
of maybe what she feels or what she is like as a person.
In parts of the video there are shots that seem to have been filmed by hand which
also gives off the effect that these people in the video have filmed it and it comes
from their point of view. There is a range of birdseye view and wide shot ,shots
which enables the viewer to fully see what is going on in the video giving the
viewer a good idea of what it is like to live their lives. It also might make the
viewer feel as if they are there in the video and as the atmosphere in the video
changes it gives the viewer that same feeling as the people in the actual video
would get.
It is an acting based performance it feels laidback and casual which might realte
to the audicence as they might be interested in taking videos and images of their
friends doing normal everyday stuff. But it aslo relates because the lyrics of the
video are about fitting into the norms of a govermental run society and usuallly
teenagers are seen to not fit into the ideals that the government have and it
allows the audience to relate to how it feels to be seen as outkasts.
12. GIVES YOU HELL – THE ALL-
AMERICAN REJECTS
This is a narrative based music video however there is actually two separate videos one being this one
the narrative and one being a acted out performance like video.
in terms of the art design, throughout the video there is a contrast between two different ways of life.
One being conservative plain and somewhat boring and the other being more outragious and crazy.
This is shown by the colours and themes of the two houses that are shown in the video the more crazy
and bring one being a stripey desings house with colours that don’t really match connoting the lack of
care and the other being a beige ordinary house connoting that the people who live in the house are
conservative and are what is seen as “normal”. Another contrasting point is the way one couple sleep in
separate beds and how he room is set out in a semtrical way again showing that these people care more
about their living style. Whereas in the other house the room is tacky with animal print and red walls
and a range of random patterns all put together
In terms of character costumes the contrast again shows how different these two people are. For
example the more exentric person is seen not really wearing a shirt with tatoos and messy hair along
with his friends all having the more rough look. And the more conservative man is dressed in matching
pjs with his wife and wearing sweater vests with all his skin covered along with his wife who is wearing a
conservative dress that goes down to her knees.
When it comes to performance in the video the lead singer along with his band members do a mixture
of both acting and lip syncing. This enables the viewer to see where and how the lyrics of the song
collerrate with the acting that is displayed in the music video. There is a part in the song where the
band members and the lead singer are sat at a table and whilst the lead singe is lip syncing the band
members clap to the beat of the song. This creates the feeling that the song is part of the story and it
isnt only the viewer hearing the song the band member’s can too creating the feeling that the viewer is
there with the band.
Theres a part in the video where the two opposing sides are arguing and instead of them saying a
normal sentence they use the lyrics of the song which gives the effect that the music belongs to the
video. The lead singer acts as both sides of the conflict in the video just in different costumes.
14. EVERY TIME- BOY PABLO
Throughout the video the band a lead singer are preforming the song to the camera on a pier next to the
sea.
The way the video is shot looks as if it has been shot on a low budget camera the transitions between the
clips or jumpy and not very smooth. The fact that it appears to have been filmed on a handheld camera
will appeal to the audience as the audience will be able to create something very sim to this video. The
video mostly focuses on the performance of the band which is a key convention to the indie genre.
Birds eye view camera sot was used regularly thought the video it gave a clear shot of the band and
allowed the audience to see what the looked like performing from different angles. In this particular part
of the video when the birds eye view shot is displayed the boy in the video is squinting from the sun ,
again this shows that the video is low budget and had been an armature performance. The camera zooms
in on the performer’s faces and instruments so that the viewer can appreciate the talent that these boys
have. The way that the band performs the song to the camera creates the feeling that they are singing for
the viewer.
The colors' in this video are bright and uplifting. The sunlight is clearly the only source of light and
shines brightly so that the water the performers are surrounded by glistens. The colors' that are featured
in the video give a lighthearted effect and makes the whole video have a happy and uplifting vibe. The
whole video is simplistic which ensures easy viewing for the viewer.
In all the video has a homemade feel to it which could attract the audience because if they tend to create
short films of them and their friends dancing around and things it should interest them because they
already have an interest in this type of video. The fact that in the video we can see friends having a good
time it encourages the viewers to go out and listen to this song to have a good time because the memory
of watching the happy video will bring back happy connotations each time they listen to the video.
16. PRIMADONNA –MARINA AND
THE DIAMONDS
In terms of performance this video is mostly the singer lip syncing to the camera whilst doing a small
bit of acting. There is no real storyline apart from what is in the song which is good because it allows
the story to become the interpretation of the viewer which makes the music video feel more personal to
them as it is what they decide what's going on in the video.
The color pallet is a range of purples pinks red whites and black this there seems to be an pastel
looking overlay on the video creating a mid 50s look this also goes with what marina is wearing through
the video which are pastel colored dresses that look 50-60s housewife inspired. There also seems to be
grain effect over the video as well that gives it an older style.
In terms of editing there are parts of the video the shot is made to look like you are watching through
an old fuzzy tv this again has the older looking theme to it and brings back the aesthetics of previous
years. This could bring a nostalgic affect to the viewer because they might remember watching tv and
the quality being like that. I think they have done this because the 90s early 2000s aesthetic is coming
back into fashion for the younger generations (15-20) and so might peak their interests.
In the video the camera tends to move alongside marina but thee are also examples of the birds eye
view and long/wide shots. This enables the viewer to sometimes feel like they are with marina in the
video and also get a clear understanding of her emotions and how they change as the video goes on.
This creates an understanding on how they can empathies with marina and helps the viewer have a
clearer understanding on how the lyrics are supposed to make them feel.
Another thing to add about the editing is the way the colors change. In the video marina is seen wearing
different outfits, which all have different colors, this again shows he emotion the viewer is meant to be
feeling at that certain time of the video. For example she is seen wearing a blue dress, the fact the dress
is blue enables the viewer to connote/understand that at that point in the video marina is feeling low or
down and this is even more evident when paired up with the lyrics that go alongside. There's also times
she is wearing a pink dress which gives off more positive connotations which makes the viewer
understand the way she is feeling at that point. Near the end of the video when the music begins to
slow down and the lyrics of the song change there is a black and white filter over marina and it is made
to look as if it raining by the car tat is in the scene is in a car wash. The overall affect from this is that as
viewers we can clearly see that marina is upset or down and that the mood has changed. This is quiet a
dramatic effect because at the begging of the song there was a range of color's and to suddenly go
from that to quite a dark vibe definitely shows the mood of the song/video has dramatically changed.
17. LDN-LILY ALLEN
In this music video the whole basis of it is the way she is looking at life
therefore there are huge contrast visually shown between the reality of
what is actually going on and how she sees it. And this is done by the
use of color the parts of the video that are in fact reality are in a sort of
black and white effect which dulls down all the colors. But in the parts
where we see what lily perceives the world as we see highly saturated
colors giving the connotations that the life she sees is far better that
the actual reality. This links in very well with the lyrics of the song as
there is clear examples of the lyrics shown in the video. This
encourages the viewer to make the world a better place and this is
because of the things she is saying in the lyrics but also what is shown
on the video. The audience look up to lily as a role model and aspire to
be like their favorite artist therefore they will try their hardest to act on
the things that are wrong with the world or at least acknowledge these
problems became lily has so clearly pointed them out.
At the start of the video there is a part where lily is acting and this is
before the song begins she gets a call from her friend telling her where
they are for her to go and meet them. The video is based around what
lily sees on her walk to go and meet her friend and because she is in a
good mood the way she perceives things that she walks by a spun into
a more positive light. This is all until at the end of the song where we
see lily acting again and getting a call from her friend telling her they
cannot meet her and because this has clearly put her in a bad mood the
reality of what's going on in the world is clearly shown and the positive
perspective she had thought the video has not vanished and we are left
18. POTENTIAL SONGS
The night- frank vallie
Female robbery – the neighbourhod
Afraid- the neighbourhood
Come a little closer- cage the elephant
As the world caves in-
Lock and load - bakar
Friday night – lily allen
Bootleg rascal – sticky fingers
Say it right- nelly frutado
Getting along- the magic gang
Teenage kicks- The undertones
19.
20. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Some techniques that I might use are…
In terms of art design ill be using oufits , setting and
colour to change the mood of the video if need be. ( if
the lyrics in the song change)
I will also edit the video so that it links up with the beat
of the song.
Most likely be performance based (someone will be lip
syncing to the song)
The video I make might have a narrative.
21. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
A narrative based video
Mise-en-scene will be used in the form of clothes
makeup and possibly propps.
The range of camera shots such as full length shots ,
crane shots and tilts or pans.
Fast and slow cuts between each clip.
Darker theme with coloured writing
22. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Following a ”main character” around a city with their friends
that are like outcasts ie. Acting and dressing in a way that to
society norms would see as outrageous.
Some parts of the song will be lip-synced to.
The costumes will be clothes that are thrifted therefore
retro type of style.
Based around the indie rock genre.
90s rock/indie theme throughout
In terms of editing there will be things like a black and
white filter with a grain effect over the top to make it look
old.
Planning to make it look like a armature type style video
It will be a mixture of candid and literal
23. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Learning how to use a different type of software
Learning different ways to film
Learning different conventions and how to film a music
video in a genre im not used to
Learning to film in different conditions ie weather and
covid.
24. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
Having permission to film in certain places.
Having access to the costumes/clothes
Biggest restriction would probably be the fact of social
distancing and having have smaller groups but I think
there should be ways around it.
Being able to gather people to film the video but again
there should be ways around that
25. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist
Teenage kicks – the undertones
Brief biographical background
The band are from Derry in Ireland the song itself was
not meant to be the biggest song of the EP but turned
out to be the most popular once realeased.
Links to other artists
Genre info
70s pop punk
26. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
Duration is 2minuets 30 seconds.
It’s a quite a quick paced video but not so much tht its
really intense.
Its in the punk genre or was at the time probably seen as
more indie now however has a bit of edge which will be
reflected by not just only the music but the video as well.
27. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
Concept of the video is virtually teenagers running abut
the town and exploring the idea of the outcasts and how
they behave maybe showing a different light on them
and showing that society's ideas surrounding teenagers
are actually wrong and they are just harmless people
having fun. The video will be a mixture of literal and
candid and wont really include a clear storyline I would
like the video to be an open concept so that it is up to
the viewer to interpret it. I want the video to make the
audience want to live as freely as the people in the video
and want them to feel like just because you don’t live up
to society's expectations it doesn't mean you don’t have
a life. Although the song was written in the 70s I think it
can still very much relate to todays on goings and will
defiantly be somewhat relatable to the audience.
29. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
30. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
31. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
In harrogate town or places in harrogate outisde. The
weather isnt much of an issue rain or anything would add
to the effect of the video. There should be no cost as the
footage will be fimled in publice places ie. free places.
32. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc.
Phone to film
Premier to edit or iMovie if have to do it at home.
Lenses for phone camera which I already have.
33. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I hope to edit the video in college if not at home.
No other facilities needed.
34. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
CREW: me , strengths filming ability and access to
different locations and I am available most days.
CAST: performers will be my friends who are available
most days no transport needed as they all live close.
35. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
90s or early 2000 type clothing which the cast already
own so no costumes are to be bought or rented.
Phone box
37. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
38. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
41. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
42. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
43. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!

angle
48. Mid shot: performers running
around being reckless.
Wide shot: performers sitting on a
wall/candid
Long shot: just the setting (ending
titles over the top)
49. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
51. PRODUCTION GROUP INFOInclude names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested

52. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
53. LOCATIONSWHERE IT IS PHOTO PERMISSIONS
Harrogate town center No permissions needed
public space.
Harrogate town center phone
box
No permissions needed public
space.
Prospect tunnel Harrogate No permissions needed public
place
One arch tunnel Harrogate No permission public place
Nidd forest Bilton No permissions public place
Hookstone woods No permissions public place
Coach road (hookstone) No permissions public
place
Stray fields cherry tree walk No permissions public

54. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
55. RISK ASSESSMENT
EQUIPMENT TEAM PUBLIC
Could get damaged
by weather or
rather by dropping
the equipment.
If this is the case I
will find a way to
protect the
equipment however
if the conditions
deem to be to
extreme then I will
make sure I don’t
film on that
specific day.
Team could get ill
or could possibly
slip or fall over in
the case that the
weather conditions
are extreme. To
avoid this situation
I will ensure to not
film when the
weather conditions
are extreme or
when there is a risk
of slippery
surfaces.
Other than
accidently being on
film without
consent public
wont be harmed
but in the case they
are filmed when
editing the video I
will ensure to blur
out their faces.
56.
57. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organizational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
58. CONTINGENCY PLAN
TECHNICAL PERSONEL LOACTION WEATHER
In the event a phone or
camera dies I will ensure to
bring or have access to a
charger or in another case
bring a spare phone. If the
event of lost footage I will
make sure I film a range of
backup clips on a spare
phone and also download
the initial clips to a trusted
device of saving area.
In the event if my main
performers not being
available as much as
possible I will allocate
someone else to be the
main character and
make sure I have people
as backup.
In the event the location I
intend to use is out of
order of over crowded I
will set a time where I
can guarantee it wont be
busy. Otherwise I will
change the location I
intend to film at on that
specific day.
In the invent that it is
raining on a day that I
am filming if it isn't too
bad I will take
precautions to protect
the camera and
equipment that I will be
using. However if the
weather conditions are
extreme and I am unable
to film I will make sure
there is another day to
film when the weather
improves and when all
my team are free.
59. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
60. SCHEDULE
